Glissant est l’un des penseurs qui cherchent délibérément une vraie universalité après l’expérience de l’universalisme colonial européen. Cette préoccupation se retrouve également dans la pensée de Walcott, et tous deux partagent à un certain dégré les idées d’ancrage dans le réel antillais, la réalité de fragmentation culturelle et l’idéal d’une relation entre les cultures différentes présentes aux Antilles. Néanmoins, nous suggérons que Walcott se retire à un niveau esthétique où il ne tente pas vraiment la réinvention culturelle qu’il propose, tandis que Glissant intègre une certaine exigence éthique dans sa pensée philosophique et poétique. Et presque partout dans la Néo-Amérique il a fallu rétablir l’équilibre entre les éléments mis en présence, en premier lieu par une revalorisation de l’héritage africain, c’est ce que l’on a appelé l’indigé-nisme haïtien, la Renaissance de Harlem et enfin la négritude (Glissant 1996, 17–18).","PeriodicalId":339941,"journal":{"name":"The Epoch of Universalism 1769–1989 L’époque de l’universalisme 1769–1989","volume":"2 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-11-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131000351","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

On the ends of universalism 论普遍主义的终结

It does so in a double sense by addressing its interests and objectives, as well as the end of its legitimation in the times we live in. Through a montage of historical and philosophical constellations from 1769 to 2019, ranging from Goethe and Champollion to Max Lingner and Frantz Fanon, Alain Mabanckou and Camille de Toledo, it seeks to understand the promises and hopes that universalism was carrying, as well as the deceptions and losses that were caused by its epistemic implication in power relations. The history of universal progress entails a dialectics of contesta-tion and provincialisation, both in a European and in a global perspective. If 1989 has left us with an end of utopia, then we need to understand this history to draw hope for a minor universality. From the beginning, the most serious and systematic attempts to write Universal Histories saw the centralissuein history as the development of Freedom. History wasnot a blindcon-catenation of events, but a meaningful whole in which human ideas concerning the nature of a just political and social order developed and played themselves out. And if we are now at a point where we cannot imagine a world substantially different from our own, in which there is no apparent or obvious way in which the future will represent a fundamental im-provement over our current order, then we must also take into consideration the possibility that History itself might be at an end (Fukuyama 1992, 51).","PeriodicalId":339941,"journal":{"name":"The Epoch of Universalism 1769–1989 L’époque de l’universalisme 1769–1989","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-11-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129221864","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In seeking to understand the intellectual history of colonial linguistics and its impact on polities such as India,this ambiguous status isacomplicatingfactor,inparticularwhenweconfrontquestionsofuniversalism, cultural difference, and identity politics. The key concept in this history is ‘Aryan’. The intellectual confidence with which nineteenth century comparativismsought to map the world’s languages, races, and cultures has largely disappeared, under assault from a range of ideological and intellectual opponents. In particular, the racial model of Indian civilization, reflected in Herbert Risley’s reading of a bas-relief at Sanchi, has been completely discredited. Yet colonial linguistics, which had arguably a much greater and more long-lasting impact on India, remains largely unchallenged, with the exception of critics associated with Hindu fundamentalism. For these critics, the distinctions drawn within colonial linguistics led to a schism within Indian society, by conceptualizing a historical divide between invading Aryans and indigenous Dravidians. A set of difficult questions arise from this. On the one hand, the rejection of western science is today linked to Hindu fundamentalism, and is driven by a xenophobic form of cultural relativism; on the other, linguistics is not a science in any universal sense, and its role in creating divisions in Indian society has arguably been a highly destructive one.","PeriodicalId":339941,"journal":{"name":"The Epoch of Universalism 1769–1989 L’époque de l’universalisme 1769–1989","volume":"296 4","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-11-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"120985044","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

D’un autre côté, le début et la fin de l’Universalisme sont marqués par le colonialisme et par le national-socialisme. Il s’agit de deux événements historiques qui, par leurs idéologies violentes, se situent à l’extrême opposé de ces projets et produisent des traumatismes trans-générationnels. Cet article vise à analyser comment cette contradiction est mise en évidence dans la littérature fictionnelle à travers ses moyens esthétiques. Confrontés aux activités colonialoimpérialistes du XVIIIe siècle ou au génocide des juifs européens par les nazis au XXe siècle, des écrivains comme Isabelle de Charrière, Romain Gary ou D.M. Thomas s’interrogent sur la relation entre les fondements humanistes communs à des systèmes de connaissances et de valeurs universellement valables et leur perversion dans la pratique sociale et politique. Ils le font par l’intermédiaire de la fiction.","PeriodicalId":339941,"journal":{"name":"The Epoch of Universalism 1769–1989 L’époque de l’universalisme 1769–1989","volume":"63 Suppl 1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2020-11-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128165852","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Face aux déchaînements de la Terre qui menacent la survie de l’humanité, il n’est plus temps de penser la réalité en termes d’opposés: singulier/universel, local/global, droite/gauche etc. Mise à genoux par un virus, l’Europe n’a d’autre choix, pour se relever, que de s’unir enfin au-delà de l’euro pour mettre en pratique les « vertus communes » et les « solidarités concrètes » défendues depuis longtemps par un certain nombre d’intellectuels : l’écologie politique doit constituer désormais sa nouvelle orientation et la cohabitation avec les laissés-pour-compte de la mondialisation son nouveau pari.
