The first DARHT accelerator became operational in July 1999 producing a single electron beam pulse at 20 MeV, 2 kA, and 60 ns pulse. The second DARHT accelerator consists of a 18.4 MeV, 2 kA, 2 microsecond pulse-width accelerator. Four short electron micropulses of variable pulse-width and spacing will be chopped out of the original, long accelerator pulse for producing time-resolved X-ray images. The first electron beam in this machine will be produced this year. We discuss the pulsed power systems associated with this machine. These include an injector driven by a Marx consisting of 88 type-E PFN stages driving a matched load at 3.2 MV with a 500 ns risetime, 2 microsecond e-beam pulse. The Metglas-filled induction cells making up the accelerator are described. Each induction cell is driven by a cell-driver that contains 4, 7-section E-network PFNs in a Marx configuration with a 20 /spl Omega/ impedance that delivers flattop of greater than 2 microseconds into a resistive load of 5 /spl Omega/ for a total drive current of 10 kA at 200 kV. The principal element of the electron beam transport system is the fast deflector, or kicker, used to generate four micropulses from the primary beam. The kicker modulator generates bi-polar 18 kV pulses of arbitrary pulse width and spacing using solid-state circuitry that is described. Component test data from the injector, accelerator, and kicker system is discussed.","PeriodicalId":339166,"journal":{"name":"Conference Record of the Twenty-Fifth International Power Modulator Symposium, 2002 and 2002 High-Voltage Workshop.","volume":"108 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2002-06-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131609282","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The first type of devices is based on subnanosecond semiconductor opening switches (SOS) acting as the switching element in the final power amplifier. This principle underlies the design of solid-state modulators providing a pulse length of 3 to 8 ns, a pulse power of 50 MW to a GW-level, a voltage of 50 kV to 1 MV, and a pulse repetition frequency up to a few kHz. Modulators of the second type are based on additional peaking of pulses by means of closing devices utilizing the principle of a delayed ionization shock wave (DBD). In this case a SOS generates an overvoltage across the DBD at a rising rate of about 10/sup 14/ V/s. As a result, the current is switched to the load via the DBD in less than 1 ns. Modulators of the second type provide an output voltage of hundreds of kV with a rise time of less than 1 ns, a peak power of up to 1 GW, and a pulse length of 1 to 2 ns.","PeriodicalId":339166,"journal":{"name":"Conference Record of the Twenty-Fifth International Power Modulator Symposium, 2002 and 2002 High-Voltage Workshop.","volume":"15 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2002-06-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128484626","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Toward this goal, several methods, which include the use of dielectric barrier discharges (DBDs) and the resistive barrier discharge (RBD) have been investigated by our group with some limited success. Here, we report on a promising method that we have been developing in our laboratory: a diffuse, nonthermal discharge, in atmospheric pressure air, generated between a planar disk-shaped metal electrode and a second electrode made of a static volume of water contained in a shallow glass dish. Presently, we have used only tap water as one of the electrodes. However, other liquids with low conductivity could also be used. In this paper, the current-voltage characteristics and gas temperature measurements of the discharge are presented. Potential applications of this atmospheric pressure discharge include decontamination, radiation sources, etc.","PeriodicalId":339166,"journal":{"name":"Conference Record of the Twenty-Fifth International Power Modulator Symposium, 2002 and 2002 High-Voltage Workshop.","volume":"104 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2002-06-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116202141","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The objective is to determine the best combination of the two gases to maximize the mixture's ability to cool a dielectric surface while maintaining high breakdown thresholds. Helium is known to be an excellent source to dissipate heat from a dielectric, but it also has a low microwave breakdown threshold. Nitrogen does not transport heat as well, but has a much higher breakdown threshold. The studies focused on generating a series of E-field vs pressure curves for breakdown to help identify optimum He-N/sub 2/ mixture ratios. The S-band double window pillbox has a 333 cm/sup 3/ cavity with two ports to flow the gas mixture through. The pillbox is placed in a traveling wave resonant ring (TWRR) coupled to a 2.85 GHz, 4 MW, magnetron. This combination of double window pillbox and TWRR allows for testing power levels up to 40 MW. High speed diagnostics are used to measure the incident/reflected power and discharge luminosity. Coupled mass flow controllers maintain the gas mixture ratio and continuous gas flow through the cavity. Investigations can be conducted with single or multiple pulsed operations. Results ranged from a minimum of 5 MW for pure helium at 760 torr, to greater than 40 MW for pure nitrogen at 3040 torr.","PeriodicalId":339166,"journal":{"name":"Conference Record of the Twenty-Fifth International Power Modulator Symposium, 2002 and 2002 High-Voltage Workshop.","volume":"66 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2002-06-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127404062","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It will require pulse modulators capable of driving over 1600 NLC klystrons at 500 kV, approximately 265 A apiece, with 3.2 microsecond pulses at 180 Hz. These pulses also have strict tolerances for flattop and voltage regulation. Average klystron input power for the complete NLC system is approximately 120 MW-representing $6-12M or more per operating hour. All losses in the power systems between the utility and the klystron must be added to this power cost, making efficiency of these systems paramount. Given the large number of modulators required and the total cost of power for the NLC, overall life cycle costs, not just the initial equipment cost, will be a significant factor in the affordability of the NLC. DTI's efforts are focused on three modulator configurations: a \"hybrid modulator\", using a solid-state switch and a pulse transformer, and two transformerless designs, one based on a 500 kV hard switch, and a second based on solid-state Marx bank. Each of these is discussed in this paper.","PeriodicalId":339166,"journal":{"name":"Conference Record of the Twenty-Fifth International Power Modulator Symposium, 2002 and 2002 High-Voltage Workshop.","volume":"4 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2002-06-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125765368","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Electromagnetic launchers, aircraft catapults, directed energy systems including microwave sources and electric lasers, and electric armors all require high energies delivered intermittently at very high power. Power systems that can provide both compact energy storage and have the ability to generate, condition and deliver power to these types of loads are of particular interest. Recent advances in rotating machines that incorporate composite structural materials have allowed significant improvement in the achievable energy storage density. Optimized electromagnetic designs, using both iron-based and air-core magnetic circuits, are being studied for pulsed and intermittent duty applications. Combining these electromagnetic designs with the ability to store energy in compact form, and advanced output power conditioning technologies offers a variety of opportunities for rotating machine innovation in pulsed power. This paper summarizes current trends in high-performance pulsed rotating machine development, and discusses some of the trade-offs involved in the selection of an appropriate rotating machine approach to a given set of application requirements. A system level view, including energy recharge, output power conditioning, and auxiliary support systems, must be considered to minimize overall power supply weight and volume. In some cases, where compactness is not the driving constraint, there are opportunities to improve efficiency and reliability, reduce complexity, or improve output pulse fidelity.","PeriodicalId":339166,"journal":{"name":"Conference Record of the Twenty-Fifth International Power Modulator Symposium, 2002 and 2002 High-Voltage Workshop.","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2002-06-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125872429","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Although it is well known that optimization of ESP efficiency in many cases can be achieved by enhancing the static electric field (which is used for both particle charging and precipitation) with short (/spl ap/10 /spl mu/s) high voltage (/spl ap/50 kV) pulses, the technical challenges for the realization of a pulsed power generator suitable for industrial use are enormous. We report on laboratory and field experiments of a novel pulse generator using a fast recovery pseudospark switch and high-power semiconductor diodes. The prototype pulse generator is able to drive capacitive loads of over 150 nF, at peak voltages of up to 40 kV, pulse duration of 6 to 10 /spl mu/s FWHM (full width at half maximum), and repetition rates of over 40 pps. The intentional mismatch between the pulse forming capacitor and the load capacitance reduces the voltage constraints on the switching element by a factor of /spl ap/0.65 while not sacrificing the overall energy efficiency. An efficient energy recovery scheme leads to efficiencies of the order of 90% and above. The pulse generator is able to withstand frequent flashover events in the ESP, with the main limitation in lifetime caused by the high peak current load in the semiconductor diodes during flashover, which can reach up to 8 kA in some cases. Field experiments on sintering plants have shown the suitability of this pulse forming scheme to drive full-scale industrial ESPs.","PeriodicalId":339166,"journal":{"name":"Conference Record of the Twenty-Fifth International Power Modulator Symposium, 2002 and 2002 High-Voltage Workshop.","volume":"21 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2002-06-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126936066","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
