The network topology dynamically changes frequently in an unpredictable manner since nodes are free to move. Support for multicasting is essential in such environment as it is considered to be an efficient way to deliver information from source nodes to many client nodes. A problem with multicast routing algorithms is their efficiency as their forwarding structure determines the overall network resource consumption makes them significantly less efficient than unicast routing algorithms. In this research, we improve the performance of the popular ODMRP multicast routing protocol by restricting the domain of join query packets, which have been lost. This is achieved by augmenting the join query packets with minimum extra information (one field), which denotes the number of the visited node from previous forwarding group. Simulation results show, that our mechanisms significantly reduce the control traffic and thus the overall latency and power consumption in the network.","PeriodicalId":339151,"journal":{"name":"2010 Sixth Advanced International Conference on Telecommunications","volume":"71 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-05-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121680955","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Technology can play a significant role in facilitating resource organization and movements to where the need arises. In this study, we adopt the concept of service discovery in mobile ad hoc networks (MANET) and adapt it to the nature of such operations. For this purpose, we introduce a novel MANET service discovery and reservation technique that is tailored to support such environments and operations. In these situations, the network is often established hastily and the communication devices are of low computational and bandwidth capabilities. The nature of service is rather unique in the sense that a service provider is required to physically move to the location of need. A service provider is often able to service only one requestor over a period of time. The proposed technique functions as a service-oriented routing protocol that locates the resource on the basis of service levels and requirements. We evaluate the technique using a simulator that we developed specifically for this purpose. The evaluation results show the high success rate of the technique in locating and reserving services with changing operational conditions such as network density and rate of requests.","PeriodicalId":339151,"journal":{"name":"2010 Sixth Advanced International Conference on Telecommunications","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-05-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116054129","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The frequency diversity can be utilized by considering data which requires unequal protection. Video data coded by scalable video coding method is an example. The video coding method encodes a certain picture period termed as group of pictures into a bit stream which can be divided into one or more decodable units. The unit is called as video layer. However the decodability of each video layer is dependent on existence of other video layers in the same bit stream. The dependency causes priority of the layer. This paper proposes a method to improve video transmission performance by adaptively providing radio resources according to the priority of the layers and also by controlling the number of the layers according to channel condition. The proposed method actives only useful subchannels and adaptively applies modulation level to the active subchannels. In the simulation, the proposed system showed 4 to 5 dB improvement in terms of channel quality, compared to a single carrier system.","PeriodicalId":339151,"journal":{"name":"2010 Sixth Advanced International Conference on Telecommunications","volume":"8 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-05-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116902563","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In multimedia cellular networks, we should not only minimize handoff dropping probability, but also control new call blocking probability and utilize bandwidth efficiently. In this paper, a novel preemptive time-threshold based bandwidth allocation scheme(PTTS) is presented. The main idea of the new scheme is based on monitoring the elapsed real time of handoff calls and according to a time threshold (te), a handoff call is either slightly-prioritized or fully-prioritized and preempt a new call. A slightly-prioritized handoff call has higher priority than a new call and lower priority than a fully-prioritized handoff call. Our simulation results show that the individual quality of service criteria of multiclass traffic such as handoff dropping probability can be achieved within targeted objective and the new call blocking probability is constrained to be below a level.","PeriodicalId":339151,"journal":{"name":"2010 Sixth Advanced International Conference on Telecommunications","volume":"5 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-05-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115493987","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The signal dynamic range is often characterized by peak-to-average ratio (PAR). Several techniques have been proposed to minimize such forms of distortion by reducing PAR such as partial transmit sequences and selected mapping (SLM), where several representations of the same signal are generated and the one with the minimum PAR is selected for transmission. Such techniques remarkably improve the system performance, but at the expense of an increased system complexity and computational burden. In this paper, we present a low complexity technique to reduce PAR based on cyclic shifts of the users’ data sequences (namely CSS). The search and optimization procedure in the proposed CSS technique is also simplified by adopting a greedy algorithm that selects the best representation sequentially as new users are added to the system. Comparison of the presented technique against SLM shows comparable improvement in terms of PAR reduction and bit error performance but with remarkable complexity reduction.","PeriodicalId":339151,"journal":{"name":"2010 Sixth Advanced International Conference on Telecommunications","volume":"31 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-05-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116014197","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Those advances are often derived from interdisciplinary solutions to complex medical problems, supported by communications and electronics, which target fast, reliable and stable solutions to problems that are demanding in terms of velocity and accuracy. Recent findings in the world of wireless communications, such as the systems beyond the third generation (B3G), as well as the utilization of knowledge and experience by means of cognitive networking principles, can be efficiently exploited, in order to support electronic healthcare, especially in emergency situations. The goal of this paper is to present intelligent management functionality based on cognitive, B3G communication systems, capable of supporting emergency, electronic healthcare applications. Simulation results using the Network Simulator-2 (NS-2) are used for evaluating the performance of the proposed functionality. Results show a significant increase in the dependability and the efficiency of medical applications when supported by cognitive wireless networks.","PeriodicalId":339151,"journal":{"name":"2010 Sixth Advanced International Conference on Telecommunications","volume":"62 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-05-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126245826","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It is based on modelling the normal behaviour of a given network service, and identifying the contents that contribute the most to the anomalous classification of a given event. These contents are extracted to provide the anomaly with a “signature” for representing it. The promising experimental results obtained show that the proposed scheme can actively contribute to the usual hard task of creating signatures for new attacks, thus improving the general monitoring and security management of network environments.","PeriodicalId":339151,"journal":{"name":"2010 Sixth Advanced International Conference on Telecommunications","volume":"13 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-05-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125972430","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The proposed solution called MS-DFGA (emph{MS-DFGA: Malleable Scheduling with Dynamic MaxFlow and Greedy Algorithms}) aims at maximizing the network utilization while increasing the requests acceptance ratio. We have adapted Multi-constrained Knapsacks Problem (MKP) to the malleable requests scheduling, and propose a solution to resolve it. MS-DFGA is performed in two steps. The first step corresponds to the computation of the candidate paths over the network using a Dynamic MaxFlow algorithm. The second step concerns the malleable requests scheduling over these paths. The paths represent the knapsacks, and the requests correspond to the items of the MKP problem. Also, we present an implementation of our solution as a new simulator framework which we have developed in a JAVA environment. Moreover, simulation results illustrate the efficiency of our scheduling method to: provide guarantees for critical grid traffics with timely execution requirements, avoid bandwidth wastage when the temporal constraints are too close and hence reducing the blocking ratio.","PeriodicalId":339151,"journal":{"name":"2010 Sixth Advanced International Conference on Telecommunications","volume":"3 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-05-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131905949","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Network designers and telecommunication practitioners must take them into account when they are planning wireless connections between devices. Some studies have demonstrated the implication of the atmospheric variables in the frequency attenuation and in the line of sight of the waves. But, to the extend of our knowledge, there is not any work published that relates the atmospheric variables with the datalink layer parameters of the WLANs. We must take into account that the datalink layer allows us to measure quite more parameters than the physical layer. After a review of the published related works, first, we will show the atmospheric variables measured during two months, and, then we will show the datalink layer parameters that we have been able to measure during those months. Finally, we will discuss the implications of the atmospheric variables in the measured parameters and we will estimate the laws followed by our measurements.","PeriodicalId":339151,"journal":{"name":"2010 Sixth Advanced International Conference on Telecommunications","volume":"5 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-05-09","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129236973","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
