With bandwidths on the order of a gigahertz, high-resolution analog-to-digital converters (ADCs) become a power consumption bottleneck. One solution is to employ very low resolution one-bit ADCs. This paper analyzes the flat fading multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) channel with one-bit ADC. Bounds on the high signal-to-noise ratio (SNR) capacity are derived for the single-input multiple-output (SIMO) channel and the general MIMO channel. The results show how the number of paths, number of transmit antennas, and number of receive antennas impact the capacity at high SNR.","PeriodicalId":338302,"journal":{"name":"2014 Information Theory and Applications Workshop (ITA)","volume":"38 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-04-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132962236","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

With N amplifiers driving N loads, a favorite choice is a “decoupling” network, which is a lossless reciprocal network that has N input ports connected to the sources and N output ports connected to the loads. The decoupling network transforms the coupled impedance of the loads into the uncoupled characteristic impedance of the sources. Any incident signal at the input ports of the network is transferred, without reflection, to the loads. Decoupling networks can be realized by generalized II-networks of lumped and distributed impedances, depending on the design frequency. Although the impedance requirements of the network are unique, its realization is not, and networks that involve many impedances can be complex to lay out on circuit boards. In this paper, we establish that a decoupling network requires a minimum of N2 + N impedances for N arbitrarily coupled loads, and provide a systematic method for realizing this lower bound.","PeriodicalId":338302,"journal":{"name":"2014 Information Theory and Applications Workshop (ITA)","volume":"91 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-04-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114906742","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Such scenarios arise in many modern settings-political interactions and online forums provide two instances-and there is a long-standing interest in modeling the dynamics of opinion evolution in such systems. By overlaying an external party-based bias on a spin glass inspired structure we show how party discipline tends to persist in the presence of independents, explore the role of neighborhood size in influencing dynamics, and exhibit conditions under which defections from party ranks are enabled.","PeriodicalId":338302,"journal":{"name":"2014 Information Theory and Applications Workshop (ITA)","volume":"31 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-04-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124810438","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The approach is based on converting some selected check nodes involving a trapping set to super checks corresponding to a shorter error-correcting component code. Specifically, we follow two main purposes to construct the check-hybrid codes: First, replacing single parity checks by super checks is done based on the knowledge of the trapping sets of the global LDPC code. We show that by converting some single checks to super checks in a trapping set, the decoder corrects the errors on a trapping set and hence eliminates the trapping set. Second, the rate-loss caused by replacing the super checks is reduced through finding the minimum number of such critical checks. We first present an algorithm to find possible critical checks in a trapping set. We then provide some upper bounds on the minimum number of such critical checks such that the decoder corrects all error patterns on certain trapping sets in the Tanner graph of the global LDPC code. We also provide a potential fixed set for a class of constructed check-hybrid codes.","PeriodicalId":338302,"journal":{"name":"2014 Information Theory and Applications Workshop (ITA)","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-04-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124331025","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The network is managed by a control (gateway) station that is attached to a power line and acts to supervise and control the sharing of the PLCN medium by stations attached to the line. We design a networking mechanism that enables active stations to efficiently transport their message flows to the gateway. Our approach is based on the selection of certain stations to act as relay stations, forming a forwarding backbone. Relay stations are directed to adapt their code rates and scheduling mechanism in aiming to achieve high spatial reuse levels that induce high throughput rates.","PeriodicalId":338302,"journal":{"name":"2014 Information Theory and Applications Workshop (ITA)","volume":"5 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-04-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122054092","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Massey (1934-2013) devoted his attention to spread-spectrum communications very infrequently and then only for brief periods of time. In a short summer study for NASA in 1969, he obtained several results on the analysis and design of sequences for direct-sequence spread-spectrum communications. We illustrate our approach using our recent work on a novel approach to the classical problem of economic dispatch i.e. the problem of allocating power generation among multiple generating units in such a way as to minimize the total cost of generation while satisfying a set of constraints. Our approach is based on a simple distributed algorithm in which each generator independently adjusts its power-frequency set-points to correct for generation and load fluctuations using only the aggregate power imbalance in the network. We show that the algorithm eventually achieves the condition of optimal economic dispatch under mild assumptions. Our algorithm exploits the power-frequency droop curve, which is a mechanism developed over many decades by power systems engineers to ensure stability in the presence of load fluctuations. Specifically the droop curve allows each generator to measure the aggregate power imbalance in the network in a distributed fashion simply by measuring frequency deviations on the grid. While our approach achieves optimal dispatch using only the implicit communication signal from the droop curve, without requiring any explicit communication whatsoever between the generating units, our recent work also shows that additional communication links can be exploited to improve the rate of convergence to optimality.","PeriodicalId":338302,"journal":{"name":"2014 Information Theory and Applications Workshop (ITA)","volume":"70 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-04-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114406986","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Then, we use the capacity bound for designing an efficient practical watermarking scheme based on dirty trellis codes. The proposed information-theoretic framework is then validated, through the use of experimentally acquired audio signals, with the use of a recently proposed frequency-domain audio watermarking. In previous work, Bolliger et al. proposed to model the input signal as (continuous-time) white Gaussian noise and derived a corresponding estimator that is based on Kalman filtering. The present paper elaborates on this new estimator. In particular, it establishes the continuity (or the piecewise continuity) of the estimate, presents a new interpolation formula between samples, complements the Kalman-filter perspective by a Wiener-filter perspective, and demonstrates practicality by numerical experiments.","PeriodicalId":338302,"journal":{"name":"2014 Information Theory and Applications Workshop (ITA)","volume":"9 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-04-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115886145","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
