When an error correcting code is included in the simulation, care must be taken to construct a statistically accurate simulation so that empirical estimates of the decoded BER match known theoretical performance results. We consider using simulation to estimate the coding gain resulting from the use of an error correcting code on a simple digital communication system. With the following assumptions: (1) the system uses a BCH or RS code and (2) the channel noise is additive white Gaussian. Simulation issues are discussed which significantly affect the statistical robustness of the simulation BER estimates. Simulation estimates are compared to known theoretical performance results to demonstrate the simulation accuracy.","PeriodicalId":338029,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of SOUTHEASTCON '96","volume":"15 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1996-04-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125365612","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This protocol structure makes the adaptation layer take over the domain management function of the MCS protocol as the adaptation layer can do this function without difficulty. Doing this can simplify the MCS protocol as well as apply it efficiently in multicast capable networks. This deserves consideration as a candidate for multimedia teleconferencing over ATM service.","PeriodicalId":338029,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of SOUTHEASTCON '96","volume":"22 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1996-04-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115507523","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Given the preponderance of existing Ethernet networks today, high-speed, switched and/or full-duplex Ethernet and Ethernet LAN emulation over ATM are extremely important, as is bridging between Ethernet and ATM. We evaluate the performance of these newly emerging technologies, using measurements from actual Ethernet and ATM products. The specific technologies evaluated include: 10 and 100 Mbps Ethernet, switched or unswitched, half-duplex or full-duplex; Ethernet LAN emulation over ATM (with comparisons to token ring LAN emulation); bridging between Ethernet and ATM, comparing a native Ethernet server vs. an ATM server. A mathematical model is presented to explain observed performance.","PeriodicalId":338029,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of SOUTHEASTCON '96","volume":"6 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1996-04-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123259087","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

OSI system management services and protocols are provided to TMN as a subset of management capabilities. Modeling, analysis, and development of the TMN communication services and protocols is essential to the stability and survivability of the underlying network.","PeriodicalId":338029,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of SOUTHEASTCON '96","volume":"28 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1996-04-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127625593","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The nature of the video traffic depends primarily on the video source, the contents of the video, and the coding algorithm that removes the redundancies for efficient transmission over networks. In this paper, we study and characterize the video information in a video conference environment. The video information is encoded by using a subband coding scheme.","PeriodicalId":338029,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of SOUTHEASTCON '96","volume":"20 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1996-04-11","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"120979489","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
