Rivers State has the third-highest HIV/AIDS burden in Nigeria. This study aimed to gain insights into the gender differences in experiences of adherence to HIV/AIDS management among HIV patients attending the University of Port Harcourt Teaching Hospital, Rivers State Nigeria. \u0000Methods: A qualitative study design was carried out among 24 adult HIV positive patients who were purposively selected. Four focus group discussions were conducted with six participants in each group (2-male groups and 2-female groups). Each session was audio-recorded with consent from participants, transcribed verbatim, and exported into ATLAS. Ti version-12 software for analysis. Results were presented in tables and diagrams, highlighting codes and quotations. \u0000Results: The majority of respondents were within 30-39 years. Most participants understood adherence as the timely ingestion of antiretroviral medications. The commonest reasons for non-adherence among the female gender were shame, poor attitude of healthcare workers, lack of support from discordant spouses/partners, and long waiting times at the clinic. While the male gender reported financial constraints and fear of being embarrassed or stigmatized. \u0000Conclusion: This study revealed the socio-cultural, economic, and psychosocial factors influencing adherence to HIV/AIDS management. Hence solutions proffered by discussants such as improving on personal efforts, disclosure to trusted persons, friendly behaviour of healthcare workers, family and spousal support should be considered by healthcare facilities, donor organizations, and the government.

The study described nurses’ involvement in identifying and managing victims of family violence. \u0000Methods: The interpretive descriptive qualitative approach was adopted for the study. Participants were purposively selected and in-depth interviews were conducted among 12 nurses working at primary health care settings with a developed interview guide. The interviews were analyzed via qualitative content analysis. \u0000Results: Findings showed that nurses identified victims of physical violence via signs of physical injury. Nurses had difficulty identifying other forms of violence that may not have physical signs and not disclosed by victims. Nurses’ management strategies were wound care for physical injuries sustained, counselling and mediation. Risk assessment, safety planning measures were not instituted as well as effective management and specialized care services for victims. \u0000Conclusion: This study showed there were gaps in identifying family violence cases and their management by nurses. Hence, the implication for further education and training of nurses, and advocacy for policy guidelines for effective management of family violence victims.

The military environment is reported to be highly stressful. This study determined the levels of stress among Nigerian military personnel in 82 division Abakpa Cantonment, Enugu and also evaluated some stressors, as well as the coping strategies of these personnel. \u0000Methods: This was a cross-sectional analytical study carried out between July and August 2020 among 261 Nigerian military personnel selected using a multistage sampling method. Data collection was done using a self-administered questionnaire (Perceived Stress Scale). Descriptive statistics were used for demographic variables while multiple linear regression was done to determine the influence of the independent variables (age, gender, marital status, etc.) on the dependent variable (stress). Level of significance was p < 0.05. \u0000Results: Majority were males (80.5%) and married (78%). Mean age was 38±10 years and most (63.3%) had worked for < 20 years. About 51.0% and 1.9% had moderate and severe stress levels, respectively. The commonest perceived causes of stress included underremuneration (32.6%), undervalued (26.1%), heavy workload (18%) and harassment (18%). The commonest positive coping strategies include talking to friends and family (36.0%) and thinking of solution (23.0%) while negative coping styles were eating (9.2%) and alcohol use (6.9%). \u0000Conclusion: More than half of the respondents had moderate level of stress. It is thought to have the ability to address the strategic challenges of the sustainable development goals. This study explored the implementation of PBF in order to determine whether it improves maternal and child health outcomes in the Nigerian context. \u0000Methods: This was a scoping literature review of online multiple databases and programme implementation documents. Six databases and an online library were searched using 30 key words, alone and in combination using Boolean terms. Thirty articles and five implementation documents were screened. At the end, 25 published articles and five implementation documents were reviewed. An adapted World Bank PBF conceptual framework was used for the review. \u0000Results: We found mixed results across most of the service indicators consistent with findings in most lower, middle income countries. In both pilot states, the quality of health services, mainly technical, improved remarkably. There was improved utilisation of maternal and child health services, particularly institutional delivery, modern contraceptives and under-five vaccination. However, client dimension of quality was reportedly poor. The study found no impact of PBF on equity. \u0000Conclusion: Collaborative partnership to develop policy frameworks for demand-side incentives to ensure equitable access to health services and sustainability of the project is essential. We further recommend that more incentives be paid for client quality dimension.

Unsafe abortion from unintended pregnancies contributes significantly to maternal mortality in Nigeria. Modern contraceptives have proven useful in preventing unintended pregnancy. The health belief model is a comprehensive tool that can be used to predict contraceptive behaviour. It provides a theoretical framework that gives better understanding of how individual beliefs affect contraceptive behaviour. This study determined the predictors of willingness to use modern contraceptives among female undergraduates of Obafemi Awolowo University Ile-Ife from the perspective of the health belief model. \u0000Methods: This descriptive cross-sectional study was conducted among 422 female undergraduates selected by multistage sampling technique. Data were collected using pretested self-administered questionnaire and analysed using IBM SPSS Version 25. Chi square test was used for association while logistic regression was used to determine the predictors. A p-value of <0.05 was considered statistically significant. \u0000Results: The mean age of respondents was 21.4±2.4 years. The prevalence of modern contraceptive use was 9.2%. Majority of the respondents 268 (79.3%) were willing to use contraceptives. The most commonly used modern contraceptive was oral pills 289 (68.5%). Perceived benefit (AOR=0.32, 95%CI=0.17-0.63, p=0.001), perceived severity (AOR=0.48, 95%CI=0.44-0.89, p=0.004) and perceived self-efficacy (AOR=0.41, 95%CI=0.22-0.78, p=0.006) were predictors of willingness to contraceptive use. \u0000Conclusion: Although willingness to use modern contraceptives was high, the actual use of contraceptives was low. Having been created at a meeting in Lagos as the Association of Community Physicians of Nigeria (ACPN) in 1974, this article traces its life and development up till 1985 at Ibadan when it became an association of a sizeable number, including theestablishment of its journal and the quarterly newsletter. \u0000The association then got reorganized between 2005 and 2007, with a new constitution, as the present ACPN, with the first Board of Trustees and registration with the Corporate Affairs Commission in the Presidency. The constitution was again revised in 2021 to accommodate the several growths that had taken place therein. \u0000The establishment from the APHPN of two other non-physician-only public health associations in Nigeria with wider global activities and other developments within the APHPN are captured in this paper so that younger members of the association may learn from these and so grow more seriously and efficiently in their personal and group benefits; and especially for the country and the world at large.

Prevalence rates of prostate cancer within Africa show Nigeria is ranked among countries with the highest prevalence. Improvement in the knowledge and attitude towards screening practices prevents millions of deaths yearly with a potential to prevent much more. This study assessed the knowledge, attitude and screening practices for prostate cancer among men in an urban community in Lagos, Nigeria. \u0000Methods: This was a descriptive cross-sectional study among 270 men selected by multistage sampling technique. Data was collected using pretested intervieweradministered questionnaire and analyzed using Epi info 7.2 statistical software. Chisquare and Fisher’s exact tests were used to determine statistical associations. A p-value of <0.05 was considered statistically significant. \u0000Results: The mean age of the respondents was 49.4±8.0 years. Sixty-seven (24.8%) had no knowledge of risk factors for prostate cancer. Overall, 33 (15.2%) of the respondents had good knowledge while 28 (58.4%) had positive attitude. Only 24 (11.0%) had ever been screened. The major reason for lack of prostate cancer screening was lack of knowledge about the disease. Good knowledge (p<0.001) and positive attitudes (p=0.003) were significantly associated with good screening practices. \u0000Conclusion: Although knowledge of prostate cancer was poor, attitude to prostate cancer screening was majorly positive. Sadly, this did not translate into good screening practices. There should be increased public awareness on prostate cancer and screening modalities available by relevant stakeholders to enhance uptake of prostate cancer screening to ameliorate the burden of the disease in Nigeria.
