The problem is decomposed in two sub-problems. The first sub-problem is optimal placement of FACTS devices using line loss sensitivity index and the second sub-problem is the load flow with FACTS parameters using modified SA/PSO techniques. The main objective of this paper is to find out the more efficient approach for loss reduction in system network. Simulations are performed on modified IEEE 14-bus system. Results are presented which demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed techniques.","PeriodicalId":337759,"journal":{"name":"2009 International Conference on Power Systems","volume":"19 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121509290","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A power distribution system is considered to be reliable if all its customers get interruption free power throughout the year. The term power quality may be referred to as maintaining near sinusoidal voltage at rated frequency at the consumers end. In recent times the issues involved with power quality have generated a tremendous amount of interest among power system engineers. In sinusoidal conditions the definitions of power components are unique and expressive. But the traditional definitions of power components become unsuitable under non sinusoidal conditions. The power component definitions under nonsinusoidal conditions have been proposed in IEEE Standard 1459–2000 both for single phase and three phase unbalanced systems. These power component definitions are based on Fourier Transform. In this paper the power components under nonsinusoidal conditions have been calculated using discrete wavelet transform. Then fuzzy logic and has been implemented for the determination of power system components and power quality factor under non sinusoidal condition.","PeriodicalId":337759,"journal":{"name":"2009 International Conference on Power Systems","volume":"12 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122628557","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The method presented shows a topology to control cascaded multilevel inverter that is implemented with multiple DC sources to get 2n+1−1 levels. Whereas a standard cascade multilevel inverter requires n DC sources or n number of transformers for 2n+1 levels at the output, where n is the number of inverter stages. Moreover, the experimental results are carried out on a scaled down prototype to prove the effectiveness of the proposed topology. This topology of firing can be implemented without using PWM technique which considerably reduces the switching losses and also brings down the Total Harmonic Distortion (THD). Simulation and experimental results show the superiority of this technique over the conventional methods.","PeriodicalId":337759,"journal":{"name":"2009 International Conference on Power Systems","volume":"18 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114884084","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In the paper, reactive power procurement model as two-level frame for the operation of a competitive market for reactive power services is discussed. In the first-level, i.e., reactive power procurement only with generators and condensers, may be taken up few months ahead with objective of minimization of reactive generation cost and real power loss, determined by ISO. In the second-level, reactive power dispatch,may be one and half hour ahead to real-time operation. Reactive power generation classification is argued to solve OPF. This framework may be adopted for any generic competitive electricity market.","PeriodicalId":337759,"journal":{"name":"2009 International Conference on Power Systems","volume":"73 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121849524","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Compared to other available heuristics ACS offers several advantages including distributed computation, positive feedback, and robustness. Optimization parameters used for the present method includes power factor, voltage profile, frequency and the health and state of capacitors and also the instant of switching. The smart device, implemented using BF533 DSP microcontroller incorporating this algorithm is to be used for traction substations, rolling mills, cold storages and furnaces with dynamic load pattern. This device will reduce the penalty charged to the consumers and also decrease loading of cables and other electrical apparatus connected to the system. Comparison of results show that ACS based algorithm, in contrast to Genetic Algorithm (GA), can offer optimum solution in much lesser time with less memory requirement. The DSP hardware platform, implementing ACS based method took 102 milli sec for searching a combination. The same system using GA based method took 3 min. 34 sec. for converging to the same result.","PeriodicalId":337759,"journal":{"name":"2009 International Conference on Power Systems","volume":"8 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125857407","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The maximum power point tracking (MPPT) of the PV output for all sunshine conditions is a key to keep the output power per unit cost low for successful PV applications. This paper proposes a new method for the MPPT control of PV systems, which uses one estimate process for every two perturb processes in search for the maximum PV output. In this estimate-perturb-perturb (EPP) method, the perturb process conducts the search over the highly nonlinear PV characteristic, and the estimate process compensates the perturb process for irradiance-changing conditions. The EPP method significantly improves the tracking accuracy and speed of the MPPT control compared to available methods. The paper presents the details analysis of the EPP method.","PeriodicalId":337759,"journal":{"name":"2009 International Conference on Power Systems","volume":"26 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122077326","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
