Network availability is an important performance parameter for network operators, who are incorporating protection and restoration mechanisms in the network to achieve competitive advantages. This paper will focus on the reduction in Capital Expenditures (CapEx) expected from implementing protection in transparent networks. We dimension a nationwide transparent network topology for restoration and path protection mechanisms using transparent and opaque architectures. We investigate the gain through protection sharing in relation to the number of links in a meshed network and the offered load on a population of 1000 generated 2-connected planar topologies with 14 nodes. We show that the gain in a transparent network is heavily dependent on the offered load, with almost no relative gain for low load (no required parallel line systems). We also show that, for opaque networks, this relative gain by protection sharing is independent of the traffic load and shows a small dependency on the number of links in the network. The node CapEx reduction for high load is comparable to the CapEx reduction in opaque OTN systems. This is rather surprising as in OTN systems the number of transceivers and linecards and the size of the OTN switching matrix all decrease, while in transparent networks only the degree of the ROADM (number and size of WSSs in the node) decreases while the number of transponders remains the same.","PeriodicalId":337446,"journal":{"name":"2012 IV International Congress on Ultra Modern Telecommunications and Control Systems","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131350816","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Consequently, the competition between network providers increases. The customer is today in a strong position with ability to select the best one among different competing providers. Besides similar pricing schemes, which are a useful decision aid for users, their choices are also influenced by expected and experience quality. So, the interest of service providers in how users perceive usability, reliability, quality and price-worthiness has increased. As a consequence, the QoE notion has been introduced to help service providers to take into account the user perception and satisfaction. In this paper, we propose an end-to-end QoE model applied to a Content Distribution Network architecture.","PeriodicalId":337446,"journal":{"name":"2012 IV International Congress on Ultra Modern Telecommunications and Control Systems","volume":"2 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126705776","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

An even major leverage reducing cost of a traditionally over-dimensioned packet network can be attributed to architectural aspects including advanced multilayer resilience. This is enabled by newly available, flexible optical technology allowing a more dynamic mode of operation of IP-over-DWDM networks. The flexible optical layer can be used to offer service-differentiated resilience combining IP protection with optical restoration in IP-over-Optical networks. By this approach, higher interface utilization can be achieved reducing capital expenditures. In addition, this also improves the overall network availability and reduces operational expenditures. After a short overview on the key enabling technologies for flexible IP-over-DWDM interworking, the authors provide guidelines for the cost-efficient IP topology design of multilayer IP-over-DWDM core networks and show that for a German backbone reference network the combination of IP A/B-plane protection with optical restoration requires 24 - 27% fewer line interfaces compared to the multilayer optimized bypass network design.","PeriodicalId":337446,"journal":{"name":"2012 IV International Congress on Ultra Modern Telecommunications and Control Systems","volume":"63 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126298129","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Indeed, today's mobile devices often support multiple communication technologies for accessing Internet services. However, they all do not tap the full potential of these capabilities, as users often have to manually select each network, and only one network is used at a time. The concept of Always Best Connected (ABC) allows a person to connect applications using the devices and access technologies that best suit to his or her needs, thereby combining the features of access technologies to provide an enhanced user experience for future Internet. One of the key features for ABC in a heterogeneous network environment is the ability to make vertical handovers. These handovers are ones where the existing connection is changed from one technology to another. This handover has been considered to be complex and to generate a number of requirements.Over the resent years there have been techniques and standards to overcome the difficulties with vertical handovers. In this research the user equipment requirements of the most significant standards are examined and specification popularity in academic world and commercially is discussed. In addition, the performance of vertical handover with Android-based implementation is examined in real-life heterogeneous network environment. The presented standards are: Voice Call Continuity based on IP Multimedia Subsystem, Unlicensed Mobile Access, Media Independent Handover and The Third Generation Partnership Project Evolved Packet System. The research will show that existing mobile platforms such as Android environment is lacking some of the key requirements for vertical handover and current implementations cannot achieve seamless mobility by means that are currently defined by specifications.","PeriodicalId":337446,"journal":{"name":"2012 IV International Congress on Ultra Modern Telecommunications and Control Systems","volume":"63 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121690665","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The apparent options of optical amplification in wavelength division multiplexing systems include the distributed Raman amplifiers, erbium doped fiber amplifiers, and semiconductor optical amplifiers. In our case distributed Raman amplifier is located at the mid-span reach extender which allows for remote amplification in passive network nodes by distributing a Raman pump together with the data signals. In the case of only distributed Raman amplifier in long reach optical access system wavelength division multiplexing exploitation is inefficient. Combining the advantages of different amplifiers allows fast gain dynamics, simultaneous large bandwidth amplification, and the ability to provide gain at any wavelength. Degradation of optical signal quality is evaluated in 10 Gbit/s long reach wavelength division multiplexing optical access system with hybrid distributed Raman-erbium doped fiber amplifier and distributed Raman-semiconductor optical amplifier.","PeriodicalId":337446,"journal":{"name":"2012 IV International Congress on Ultra Modern Telecommunications and Control Systems","volume":"20 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125614787","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In a multihop CR ad hoc network, aggregating knowledge about the external environment is a task which the CR nodes must perform based on their individual and collective capacity. In this paper, we introduce Distributed Resource Map (DRM), a framework for cooperation and knowledge aggregation in cognitive radio ad hoc networks. The DRM is a database-driven knowledge base aimed at exploiting distributed sensing performed by heterogeneous CR nodes and inter-nodes cooperation to maintain a network-wide support architecture. The awareness obtained through DRM architecture is used to drive the learning and decision making functions of a Cognitive Engine (CE). We present the core concepts, the architectural components, underlying knowledge aggregation functions, and a summary of the validation and realization effort. The paper concludes with a planned experimental work for DRM.","PeriodicalId":337446,"journal":{"name":"2012 IV International Congress on Ultra Modern Telecommunications and Control Systems","volume":"103 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-10-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132709849","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
