The various layers involved during a soft handover are modelled inclusive of the physical layer, layer 2 and layer 3. Event based handover is considered in terms of a handover being triggered by the reporting of certain events. Utilising Monte Carlo simulations, the effect of soft handover parameters are investigated to determine the effect on soft handover boundaries in a suburban morphology. The optimal set of parameter values can now be determined and provide insight on what can be expected prior to implementation in a live network. The proposed parameter settings were trialled and validated in a live WCDMA network. These algorithms can also be used to develop a fast multi-signal GNSS software receiver. With the planed completion of Galileo and Glonass CDMA systems, a GNSS receiver can take advantage of these and GPS signals to aid localization in bad reception areas such as urban-canyons. Such receivers deploy all available resources to find signals even when signals are not available. This paper proposes two approaches that can rapidly detect, in a single view, any GNSS signal power present. The first approach analysis the three signals excitations to a nonlinear bandpass sampling (BPS) receiver that folds these three signals, with their harmonics, to their first Nyquist zone (FNZ). Then, it analyzes their behavior model based on a Volterra algorithm to obtain kernels of these three GNSS signals, if available. Because all three GNSS signals are transmitted with the same carrier frequency, the second approach filters out the right-side/lobe of the Glonass signal and the left-side/lobe of the Galileo signal. This will enable none overlapped folding, based on BPS, of these two signals with the 3rd GPS harmonic in FNZ. These approaches make any GNSS receiver well-informed of available signals, and so devote appropriate resources to acquire and track available signals only. This balancing of load not only improves resilience against link failures but also provides an indication of the margin available for growth in demand values. In this paper, we present a novel mixed integer programming formulation for minimization of maximum link utilization in the case of link failure. The new formulation is much more compact than a previously proposed formulation. Additionally, we propose a local search heuristic with exact neighborhood search to tackle larger problems within reasonable computational time. The empirical examination on several test problems demonstrates that, with the new compact problem formulation, CPLEX is able to find solutions much quicker. The heuristic works well and in several cases yields better solutions than ILP in a given time limit, or provides solutions for problems where ILP could not even find one valid solution in the given time limit. We study a situation where a PU, while transmitting, can sense idle channels with a better transmission rate than the one currently occupied and can switch to such a better channel. This switching behaviour affects the PU activity profile on the channels and hence also the SU throughput, since SU packet transmissions are confined to the gaps left by the PUs. Different PU switching strategies are studied by developing a continuous-time Markov chain (CTMC) for each strategy. Performance measures include the mean sojourn time of PUs as well as the saturation throughput and interruption probability of SU packets. Some specific considered scenarios quantitatively demonstrate the influence of the PU switching speed. Peers join the network following a Poissonian process, download progressively one or possibly many concurrent video contents, and abort the system when they wish. The system is supported by static servers managed by the operator, called super-peers, and the altruism of peers, that upload resources and might stay online even after completing downloading. Our goal is to minimize the expected download time perceived by end-users under regime. We propose a general fluid model, and show that it is stable, reaching its regime. Via the Little's law, we find closed expressions for the expected waiting time under regime in terms of the popularity of different contents, file sharing efficiency and other network parameters. We state theoretically that this system outperforms traditional Content Delivery Networks (CDN). The operator can decide only the number of video replicas stored in each super-peer, a fact that has a direct impact on the mean waiting times. Hence, a combinatorial optimization problem is introduced, whose nature is similar to the multi-knapsack problem (i.e. the items are video contents, and the knapsacks are the super-peers storage). A greedy randomized resolution is here designed, and a comparison between traditional content distribution systems promotes the deployment of peer-to-peer video on-demand services. Finally, real-life scenarios are studied based on traces taken from YouTube. This is where the need for well-organized vertical handoffs (VHOs) between heterogeneous wireless technologies become evident. This paper presents a new VHO algorithm which takes into account a complete set of system attributes to fulfill two tasks. The first task is to perform the VHO Necessity Estimation (VHONE) utilizing several parallel Fuzzy Logic Controllers (FLCs) with reduced rule sets to estimate the VHO necessity. The second task is the selection of the best network as the target for VHO, where a ranking algorithm is developed based on TOPSIS. Priority Weights for the different system attributes are calculated based on a Fuzzy Analytical Hierarchy Process (FAHP). The ever-increasing demand on broadband connectivity, specifically in the Last-Mile networks, leads to the use of Free-Space optical systems in combination with RF systems above 100 GHz, which are able to reach data rates in the order of 10 Gb/s. However, both systems are strongly influenced by weather conditions. A significant increase in the link availability can be achieved by combining both technologies. An optimum design of such systems requires reliable models of atmospheric channels. The test link presented in this paper is intended for long-term monitoring of atmospheric attenuation and turbulence in the optical band at 850 nm and 1550 nm, and in the millimeter band at 122 GHz. The bandwidth of both measuring systems has been chosen narrow but sufficient for capturing all important phenomena.
