{"title":"Conceptual and Theoretical Exposition on Democracy and Human Rights","authors":"Joseph Adekeye Adeshola, Ajape Temitope Solomon","doi":"10.3968/12237","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.3968/12237","url":null,"abstract":"Liberal democracy as a system of government in theory guarantees; human dignity, equality, social justice, morality, liberty, freedom, rule by the majority, selection of representatives directly or indirectly, popular participation, observance of the tenets of rule of law, separation of powers and fair play. The theory of democracy equally encourages the protection of fundamental human rights of citizens. In practice, the above features of democracy may become unrealistic if elected representatives choose to be doctorial, despotic, totalitarian, authoritarian and anti-democratic at the long run. Therefore, the major thrust of this chapter is to interrogate the connection between democracy and human rights in practice. Methodologically, a qualitative data was obtained in form of content analysis of; extant laws, constitutional provisions, Universal Declaration of Human Rights, empirical Studies, Journals, textbooks and monograph. Valid conclusions were drawn after thorough analysis of secondary data. The findings of the study reveal that the connection between democracy and human rights is debatable since the inability to determine the scope of human right made its universal application an intricate task. On the whole, the study recommends for enlightenment campaigns and political education of citizens about their rights and responsibilities in representative democracy. Also, there is need to define the scope of human right globally in order to enhance its universal applicability.","PeriodicalId":335707,"journal":{"name":"Canadian Social Science","volume":"111 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-08-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124254970","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It is beneficial to analyze the scenario evolution of unconventional emergencies to grasp the focus of emergency management. In this paper, a questionnaire survey was conducted on a factory in the “5.12 Wenchuan Earthquake”, and the accident was divided into four scenarios: ten minutes before the earthquake, during the earthquake and the escape process, the local self-rescue process, and the external rescue process. Social Network Analysis method is used to explore the scenario evolution law of unconventional emergencies, and relevant suggestions are made in combination with the rules.","PeriodicalId":335707,"journal":{"name":"Canadian Social Science","volume":"22 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-08-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127487188","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This paper gives an introduction to Yus’ VV model and then applies the model to analyze three advertisements with the VV model’s four parameters of communication: exchange, message, intentionality, and efficiency. Yus’ VV model successfully captures all possible interpretive categories of the selected advertisements. The study finds that the first selected ad has one communication layer—spectator-oriented communication—and is intentionally conveyed non-verbally to readers. The second ad has two communication layers—character-oriented and spectator-oriented communication. The author intentionally conveys the message to readers both verbally and non-verbally. The last ad has one communication layer—spectator-oriented communication. The author intentionally uses non-verbal communication with the readers. For all three ads, the reader may have maximal or minimal interpretive efficiency based on individual differences. This study analyzes advertisements at different levels of communication from a cognitive perspective. Currently, few studies do so. And this study provides a reference for the analysis of media discourse under the framework of relevance theory.","PeriodicalId":335707,"journal":{"name":"Canadian Social Science","volume":"38 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-08-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121894066","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

As the only Chinese news platform eligible for publishing articles from the foreign press, it serves as a “corpus” to study news transediting strategies in the context of China. This paper selects sources related to the COVID-19 pandemic from Reference News and compares the sources with the transedited articles. The author upholds there are three main paratexts guiding the process of transediting pandemic-themed articles on Reference News : reader’s value and horizon of expectations, ideology and national emotions, and national interests. It can be concluded that, under the influence of those three paratexts, Reference News generally prefers to use four strategies to transedit relevant articles, namely the selection and combination of sources, deletion, addition, and variation. The author hopes that, given the significance and popularity of pandemic-related information and opinions, this paper can enlighten future research on transediting news articles about COVID-19.","PeriodicalId":335707,"journal":{"name":"Canadian Social Science","volume":"15 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-08-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127821940","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In the research process, thinking-aloud protocols (TAPs) is widely used. The research on the translation process of TAPs is a part of the translation process of cognitive psychology. In the cognitive research on the translation process of TAPs, some translation researchers at home and abroad have conducted experiments. The research of TAPs translation process has its specific research object, research methods and data collection requirements. Data collection methods will directly affect the results of the research. Therefore, more scientific data collection methods and a reasonable number of subject should be considered in the research of TAPs translation process. In this paper, the translation strategies and translation unit and so on are analyzed. At the same time, the selection of subjects and data collection types are discussed in order to through the processing of experimental data, to analyze the translator’s psychological processes. It’s hoped the research can provide certain reference for real translation study.","PeriodicalId":335707,"journal":{"name":"Canadian Social Science","volume":"12 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-08-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114323536","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The illusion of Blanche is one of the author’s delicate creations. On the one hand, Blanche wanted to go after a new life and true love; on the other hand, she was not scared of confronting the fact of life. The division of her individuality led to her tragic fate. Blanche was a victim of two vicious systems: feudalism of the old South and capitalism of the rejuvenated union. The moral standard and value of life made her incapable of doing something. She regarded men as the anchor for her life and lacked resolution to live in the society. Finally, she was dropped by men as well as the society.","PeriodicalId":335707,"journal":{"name":"Canadian Social Science","volume":"50 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-08-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122045659","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
