The project focuses on collaborative numerical simulation and visualization in grid environments. Furthermore, the project is also to develop grid-enabled capability and products for use by the wider community. The current status of the MASSIVE project is reported and a prototype grid utilizing resources at the Center for Engineering and Scientific Computation (CESC) in ZheJiang University (ZJU) is discussed. This grid gets a model geometry generated by CAD systems and transfers it to an SGI Onyx 3900 supercomputer where it is meshed. The meshed geometry is then transferred to a DAWNING PC cluster where it is used to solve computational fluid dynamics and computational solid mechanics problems and it is finally visualized showing numerical results.","PeriodicalId":335281,"journal":{"name":"Fifth IEEE/ACM International Workshop on Grid Computing","volume":"81 2 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2004-11-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123212843","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This project addresses the need for the integration of a dynamic firewall into a grid-enabled application environment. By its very nature, a grid-computing environment consists of a dynamic collection of applications, resources, and services that require access to network ports. The focus of this paper is on developing a dynamic iptables-based firewall that is capable of automatically identifying valid grid user/application network port connection requests and satisfying these requests based on a Globus proxy. The dynamic firewall (Dyna-Fire) service has been integrated into the Western New York's ACDC-Grid.","PeriodicalId":335281,"journal":{"name":"Fifth IEEE/ACM International Workshop on Grid Computing","volume":"21 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2004-11-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132390220","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Resource management and load balancing are key concerns when implementing grid middleware and improving resource utilization. Grid resource management can be implemented as a multiagent system with resource advertisement and discovery capabilities if job requests from users are associated with explicit QoS requirements. In this work agent-based self-organization is proposed to perform complementary load balancing for batch jobs with no explicit execution deadlines. In particular, an ant-like self-organizing mechanism is introduced and proved to be powerful to achieve overall grid load balancing through a collection of very simple local interactions. A modeling and simulation environment is developed to enable performance of the ant algorithm to be investigated quantitatively. Simulation results included in this work illustrate the impact of different performance optimization strategies on the overall system load balancing level, speed and efficiency.","PeriodicalId":335281,"journal":{"name":"Fifth IEEE/ACM International Workshop on Grid Computing","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2004-11-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130323550","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Semantics has to be processed to manage dynamism and other properties like state, life cycle, faults, and others. In our paper we identify a gap between service interfaces and semantic for dynamic services to establish virtual organizations. We propose a novel approach called \"dynamic service evolution\" (DSE) to overcome this gap. A common language is needed to allow dynamic semantic information processing. The evolution of a language enables bilateral agreements between services and clients in an open process. We have applied our approach in N2Grid and present a prototype in this paper. N2Grid deploys artificial neural networks as virtual resources in a Grid. By the DSE we solve the problem, which no general standards (languages) for neural network representations exist.","PeriodicalId":335281,"journal":{"name":"Fifth IEEE/ACM International Workshop on Grid Computing","volume":"33 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2004-11-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132087946","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Recent performance improvement of CPU and computer network has made memory usage a significant factor of overall performance. In this study, we consider memory availability as a performance factor and introduce memory conscious task partition and scheduling. Three task partition policies are discussed. They are CPU-based, memory-based, and CPU-memory combined partition. We first investigate the three task partition policies on dedicated resources and verify the effectiveness of the CPU-memory combined partition algorithm in finding an optimal solution. We then extend the task partition policies in nondedicated environments with the consideration of resource sharing. Analytical and experimental results show that the CPU-memory combined scheduling approach outperforms either the CPU-based or memory-based scheduling approach considerably for memory-intensive applications in grid environments.","PeriodicalId":335281,"journal":{"name":"Fifth IEEE/ACM International Workshop on Grid Computing","volume":"49 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2004-11-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121852178","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

DiPerF coordinates a pool of machines that test a target service, collects and aggregates performance metrics, and generates performance statistics. The aggregate data collected provide information on service throughput, on service fairness' when serving multiple clients concurrently, and on the impact of network latency on service performance. Furthermore, using this data, it is possible to build predictive models that estimate a service performance given the service load. We have tested DiPerF on 100+machines on two testbeds, Grid3 and PlanetLab, and explored the performance of job submission services (pre-WS GRAM and WS GRAM) included with Globus Toolkit/spl reg/ 3.2.","PeriodicalId":335281,"journal":{"name":"Fifth IEEE/ACM International Workshop on Grid Computing","volume":"138 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2004-10-05","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131561414","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Our approach achieves the following design objectives: near-zero knowledge of network topology, zero knowledge of system status, autonomous scheduling, distributed computation, lack of specialized nodes. Every node is equally responsible for scheduling and computation, both of which are performed with practically no information about the system. We believe that this model is ideally suited for large-scale unstructured grids such as desktop grids. This model avoids the extensive system knowledge requirements of traditional grid scheduling approaches. Contrary to the popular master/worker organization of current desktop grids, our approach does not rely on specialized super-servers or on application-specific clients. By encapsulating computation and scheduling behavior into mobile agents, we decouple both application code and scheduling functionality from the underlying infrastructure. The resulting system is one where every node can start a large grid job, and where the computation naturally organizes itself around available resources. Through the careful design of agent behavior, the resulting global organization of the computation can be customized for different classes of applications. In a previous paper, we described a proof-of-concept prototype for an independent task application. In this paper, we generalize the scheduling framework and demonstrate that our approach is applicable to a computation with a highly synchronous communication pattern, namely Cannon's matrix multiplication.","PeriodicalId":335281,"journal":{"name":"Fifth IEEE/ACM International Workshop on Grid Computing","volume":"62 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124343303","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
