VGE automates the provision of HPC applications as grid services for on-demand super-computing and simplifies the construction of client-side applications. As a key distinguishing feature, VGE supports a flexible QoS negotiation model which enables clients to negotiate dynamically, and on a case-by-case basis, QoS guarantees on execution time and price with potential service providers. The VGE service provision framework is currently utilized in the context of the EU Project GEMSS, which focuses on the provision of advanced medical simulation services by means of a grid infrastructure.","PeriodicalId":335281,"journal":{"name":"Fifth IEEE/ACM International Workshop on Grid Computing","volume":"4 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2004-11-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115320910","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Implementing the fault-tolerance transparently at the grid-middleware level would make different data intensive applications fault-tolerant without each having to pay a separate cost and reduce the time to grid-based solution for many scientific problems. We analyzed the failures encountered by four real-life production data intensive applications: NCSA image processing pipeline, WCER video processing pipeline, US-CMS pipeline and BMRB BLAST pipeline. Taking the result of the analysis into account, we have designed and implemented Phoenix, a transparent middleware-level fault-tolerance layer that detects failures early, classifies failures into transient and permanent and appropriately handIes the transient failures. We applied our fault-tolerance layer to a prototype of the NCSA image processing pipeline and considerably improved the failure handling and report on the insights gained in the process.","PeriodicalId":335281,"journal":{"name":"Fifth IEEE/ACM International Workshop on Grid Computing","volume":"21 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2004-11-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129509037","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Three metrics (over-deadline, makespan and idle-time) are combined with variable weights to evaluate the scheduling performance. These three metrics are used to measure the extent of the jobs' QoS demand compliance, the resource throughput and the resource utilization. Two levels of performance optimisation are applied in the multicluster. At the multicluster level, a scheduler (which we call MUSCLE) allocates parallel jobs with high packing potential to the same cluster; it also takes the jobs' QoS requirements into account and employs a heuristic to allocate suitable workloads to each cluster to balance the overall system performance. At the single cluster level, an existing workload manager, called TITAN, utilizes a genetic algorithm to further improve the scheduling performance of the jobs previously allocated by MUSCLE. Extensive experimental studies are conducted to verify the effectiveness of the scheduling mechanism as well as the effect of the prediction accuracy on the scheduling performance. The results show that compared with traditional distributed workload allocation policies, the comprehensive scheduling performance of parallel jobs is significantly improved across the multicluster, and the presence of prediction errors does not dramatically weaken the performance advantage.","PeriodicalId":335281,"journal":{"name":"Fifth IEEE/ACM International Workshop on Grid Computing","volume":"16 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2004-11-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122100953","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Our model produces policies that balance the number of required resources with the desire to keep the cost of hosting the service to a minimum. The two components of cost that we consider are the deployment cost and the cost to keep the service active, which we view as a lease. We cast the problem in a dynamic programming framework and we are able to show that the model makes good leasing decisions in the face of such uncertainties as random demand for the service and random execution times of service requests. The results show that the policies obtained from the model reduce the cost of hosting a service and significantly reduce the variance of that cost.","PeriodicalId":335281,"journal":{"name":"Fifth IEEE/ACM International Workshop on Grid Computing","volume":"204 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2004-11-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123047427","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We design, implement and evaluate Mobile OGSI.NET, which extends an implementation of grid computing, OGSI.NET, to mobile devices. Mobile OGSI.NET addresses the mobile devices' resource limitations and intermittent network connectivity, factors which differentiate them from traditional computers. Because Mobile OGSI.NET uniquely supports the hosting of grid services on the device, Mobile OGSI.NET is an important step toward making the mobile device a first-class entity in grids based on OGSI or the Web Services Resource Framework (WSRF).","PeriodicalId":335281,"journal":{"name":"Fifth IEEE/ACM International Workshop on Grid Computing","volume":"103 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2004-11-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124204012","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We consider a \"pull-based\" strategy, wherein the processing nodes request load from the sources. We employ the Incremental Balancing Strategy (IBS) algorithm proposed in the literature and propose a buffer estimation strategy to derive optimal load distribution. We consider nontime critical loads that arrive at arbitrary times with time varying buffer availability at sinks and utilize buffer reclamation techniques so as to schedule the loads. We demonstrate detailed workings of the proposed algorithm with illustrative examples using real-life parameters derived from STAR experiments in BNL for scheduling large volume loads.","PeriodicalId":335281,"journal":{"name":"Fifth IEEE/ACM International Workshop on Grid Computing","volume":"9 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2004-11-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116619269","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To provide users with the necessary assistance for selecting resources with compatible software environments and/or for automatically establishing such environments, an accurate source of information about the software installed across the grid is needed. Existing software information services and general-purpose information frameworks are inadequate for this task. This paper presents a new OGSI-compliant software information service that has been implemented as part of NASA's Information Power Grid project. This service is built on top of a general framework for reconciling information from periodic, on-demand, and user-specified sources. Information is retrieved using standard XPath queries over a single unified namespace independent of the information's source. Two consumers of the provided software information, the IPG Resource Broker and the IPG Naturalization Service, are briefly described.","PeriodicalId":335281,"journal":{"name":"Fifth IEEE/ACM International Workshop on Grid Computing","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2004-11-08","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131007654","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
