These algorithm are applied to synthetic images of modern pdf documents with noise from historical documents. Today, many scientists work on the binarization task and many algorithms have been proposed. However, the selection of the most appropriate one is not a simple procedure. The evaluation of these algorithms proved to be another difficult task since there is no objective way to compare the results. Here, 4 groups with 6 systems are participating in the competition. The experimental setting is described in detail. Moreover, a short description of the participating groups, their systems, and the results achieved are finally presented","PeriodicalId":335044,"journal":{"name":"2010 12th International Conference on Frontiers in Handwriting Recognition","volume":"109 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-11-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132307841","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Various profile and transitional features are extracted from gray-scale word images. The gray-scale feature vectors are then converted into binary feature vectors by replacing each value within the gray-scale feature vectors with its binary equivalents. In this way, we have enabled the alignment of the gray-scale feature vectors via a faster binary pattern matching algorithm, i.e., Correlation Similarity Measure (CORR). The approach has effectively handled the handwriting variations of 200 different writers. The average precision rate achieved is 94.75 % for an average recall of 60.25%. The time taken for matching every set of two word images is 1.43 ms.","PeriodicalId":335044,"journal":{"name":"2010 12th International Conference on Frontiers in Handwriting Recognition","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-11-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130452940","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In contrast to the conventional approach, based on Gaussian mixture HMMs, we have recently proposed to directly fed columns of raw, binary pixels into Bernoulli mixture HMMs. In this work, column bit vectors are extended by means of a sliding window of adequate width to better capture image context at each horizontal position of the word image. Using these windowed Bernoulli mixture HMMs, very good results are reported on the well-known IfN/ENIT database of Arabic handwritten Tunisian town names.","PeriodicalId":335044,"journal":{"name":"2010 12th International Conference on Frontiers in Handwriting Recognition","volume":"38 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-11-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134398886","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To identify patterns, our human perceptual system is based on basic features called perceptual codes. Analysing handwriting, we notice the existence of elementary and global ones. Gathering the elementary perceptual codes in various constraints we obtain global ones, and to obtain different forms of handwriting, we proceed by combining them. So, we present a new approach to improve handwriting segmentation via perceptual encoding system. This system uses the fuzzy set theory to detect the elementary perceptual codes (EPCs) and the genetic algorithms for the global perceptual ones (GPCs). To validate our new approach, a large Arabic lexicon was developed containing words, alphabet and digits acquired by different writers on digitizing tablet, in addition to ADAB database set. The obtained results show successful representations of Arabic handwritten script via perceptual codes.","PeriodicalId":335044,"journal":{"name":"2010 12th International Conference on Frontiers in Handwriting Recognition","volume":"61 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-11-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132586835","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Different from conventional rejection methods which use the same rejection threshold for all samples, this technique utilizes the local information of samples to optimize the rejection threshold. The samples with the same class pair in the first two recognition candidates are treated as the same sample category. Based on the rejection distribution of the sample categories, the parameters of rejection threshold mapping of similar character pairs are learned and stored. When performing rejection, the corresponding mapping parameters are searched according to the class pair in the first two recognition candidates, and applied on the input threshold. The transformed threshold is used in final rejection decision. The experiments show that it is able to decrease error rate under same rejection rate on handwritten Chinese character recognition which verify its effectiveness.","PeriodicalId":335044,"journal":{"name":"2010 12th International Conference on Frontiers in Handwriting Recognition","volume":"46 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-11-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114927212","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Two new benchmarking datasets, one for text line and one for word segmentation, were created in order to test and compare recent algorithms for handwritten document segmentation in realistic circumstances. Handwritten document images were produced by many writers in several languages (English, French, German and Greek). The dataset of previously organized contest (ICDAR ICDAR 2009 Handwriting Segmentation Contest) was used as training dataset. This paper describes the contest details including the datasets, the ground truth, the evaluation criteria as well as the performance of the 7 submitted methods along with a short description of each method.","PeriodicalId":335044,"journal":{"name":"2010 12th International Conference on Frontiers in Handwriting Recognition","volume":"14 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-11-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123560727","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

When the OCR output is post-processed using a language model, a probability, a reliability index (or a “transformation cost”) is usually obtained, reflecting the likelihood (or its inverse) that the string of OCR hypotheses belongs to the model. Using a threshold on this index (or cost) to reject the less reliable hypotheses, a variable level of expected accuracy can be imposed on the output. It is much more convenient for the user the ability to “fix” at an acceptable level the expected error rate instead of having to deal with an arbitrary threshold. Of course, the result will always be high reject rates for difficult tasks and lower reject rates for easier tasks.","PeriodicalId":335044,"journal":{"name":"2010 12th International Conference on Frontiers in Handwriting Recognition","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-11-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125863454","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The incremental development of the expression tree is important for real-time recognition, due to the requirement of instantaneous user feedback. Traditional parsing techniques are not suitable for this approach. However, the scalability of a grammar-based approach is appealing and has been incorporated into the structural development technique. The tree is developed, using the relationships discovered by detailed spatial analysis techniques. Due to the fact that unordered and multi-stroke symbols can affect previous increments of the expression tree, the system employs a backtracking technique to revert back to previous states. While this avoids the need to impose symbol ordering constraints on the user and reduces the complexity of relationship discovery, we will describe here how it also simplifies the structural development process.","PeriodicalId":335044,"journal":{"name":"2010 12th International Conference on Frontiers in Handwriting Recognition","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-11-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128656946","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Mokkans are wooden tablets with handwritten characters used in 8th century Japan. Due to damages and natural deterioration, the interpretation of the text on mokkans is difficult even for archeologists and historians. The automatic interpretation of mokkan text is unrealistic due to drastic deterioration. Our aim is to realize an image processing software system for archeologists, specific to the processing of mokkans. This paper evaluates noise reduction and contrast enhancement techniques for inclusion in the system. Several operations such as thresholding and Gaussian blurring are shown to be effective, when used in conjunction with contrast enhancement in the HSV space. We also identified several techniques that allow convenient selection of character strokes in of mokkan images. The selection can then be used as input for character recognition.","PeriodicalId":335044,"journal":{"name":"2010 12th International Conference on Frontiers in Handwriting Recognition","volume":"79 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-11-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127038443","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Contrary to most of the approaches presented in the literature, our system relies on a global handwriting line model describing two kinds of information : i) the relevant information and ii) the irrelevant information represented by a shallow parsing model. The shallow parsing of isolated text lines allows quick information extraction in any document while rejecting at the same time irrelevant information. Results on a public french incoming mails database show the efficiency of the approach.","PeriodicalId":335044,"journal":{"name":"2010 12th International Conference on Frontiers in Handwriting Recognition","volume":"10 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-11-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132091635","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
