Three levels are considered-factory, section and machine-each level presenting a different stochastic optimization problem. The machines are universal. The rates of demand and the due dates are pregiven deterministically. Each machine processes parts with several possible speeds which are subject to disturbances. On the machine level, the problem is to determine for each unit at every routine control point the speed to proceed with and the timing of the next control point. There are chance constraints for each unit of the machine and section levels; there should not be a shortage with a pregiven confidence probability. On the upper levels, the problem is to reassign the target amounts among various units or to relocate the resources whenever any of the units fail to meet the chance constraints. However, due to its efficiencies, a new standard is in the process of development and will gradually replace IGES. It is believed that PDES will be less error-prone than IGES. Its improvements include free-form format representation of objects, a three-level database architecture, and reduced memory and time requirements. Future IGES developments will be suspended when PDES is introduced to general use. This requires a common framework for data management throughout the CIM environment. The authors discuss the object paradigm as a framework for this purpose. They present an experimental data-management environment for engineering, CAD/CAM, and CIM that is based on object technology. The system ROSE, is able to represent both the structured and operational semantics of the data, leading to greater data integrity and facilitating sharing of data between CIM systems. However, the object paradigm's inheritance mechanism is useful only in limited cases. The construction is based on the principle of assembly by disassembly and on assembly heuristics representing criteria for preferred subassemblies. The system first identifies disassemblable parts and subassemblies by reasoning geometric and physical constraints as well as resource requirements, and then assigns preference to the identified disassembly options based on assembly heuristics. The recursive application of this process to the selected disassemblies results in a hierarchical partial-order graph (HPOG). The HPOG not only specifies the required precedence in part assembly but also provides parallelism for implementing multiple-robot distributed and cooperative assembly. A Lagrangian relaxation technique is applied to a constrained integer programming formulation of the problem. A decomposition by job of the dual problem serves to simplify the solution at a low level. The high-level problem is then solved by a subgradient method. In general, the resulting solution in the dual space is associated with an infeasible solution in the primal space. A heuristic approach is developed to generate a feasible solution, using the solution to the dual problem and concept of 'degree of freedom' in scheduling each job. On two problems tested, the feasible solutions generated by the heuristic are within 0.5% of the dual optima. The concept of degree of freedom can be used to study the scheduling of new jobs. However, this results in an unpredictable output sequence of vehicles leading to problems in material flow, especially in plants that use just-in-time (JIT) parts delivery. A flow model is developed that captures the relationship between processing time, systems throughput, loading mix, system size, and output sequence number. The model provides several insights for design and configuration of a plant and aids in setting operating policies. It was validated by performing spectral analysis using plant data. A stochastic control problem is identified, to optimize the expected discounted cost of the system. The control consists in dispatching n bins to a processor unit which can process only one bin at a time. A dynamic programming approach is used, and numerical techniques are applied for the solution of the two-bin case.
