Self-assessment is a very important aspect of this system. As various types of subject material can be explored, series of questions are posed to prompt further investigation and reflection on what has been learnt. This will foster the development of a questioning and critical reasoning attitude in students. In the absence of ‘experts’ and pressures of time, the capacity for independent critical thought should be enhanced. ICAS, then, is a student-centred, self-paced learning package with teaching strategies based upon discovery and problem solving. A review of the unique educational aspects of ICAS is given, including a description of the ICAS design, along with a recount of the implementation of ICAS. This shows that ICAS amplifies the learning experience for students and is a significant step forward in CAL.","PeriodicalId":334979,"journal":{"name":"Intell. It also questions the value of ‘user-friendly’ user interfaces. By adopting metaphors which reflect existing media usage these interface tools reinforce traditional points-of-view and make it difficult, if not impossible, to investigate and develop a new multimedia context and ‘language’.","PeriodicalId":334979,"journal":{"name":"Intell. The results of new research are now experienced rather than strictly explained, though this may still entail advantages for its general understanding. As well as scientific visualisation that is produced for both epistemological and promotional purposes, many of the graphical and animation techniques commonly employed for arts and entertainment productions come about as a result of methods developed for scientific modelling. Many computer animators that have achieved popularity in recent years also come from partly scientific backgrounds and use many of the mathematical skills and techniques acquired from those disciplines. I am thinking here of the work of Karl Sims, Yochiro Kawaguichijon McCormack and William Latham, artists who all (with the exception of William Latham) have degrees in the sciences as well as arts. In response to the observation that theoretical developments are constrained by rather generalist assumptions regarding communication, Ricoeur's (1976) analysis of the distinguishing characteristics of text and talk is examined. Ricoeur's proposals highlight the importance of specifying appropriate criteria in this domain, and serve as the background framework for a second objective: outlining a model of the reader-author relationship for hypermedia environments. Fulfilling this aim is supported by a consideration of Flowers (1987) and her identification of the presuppositions underscoring the act of reading and writing. This model informs the proposal that the design of successful (and engaging) hypermedia systems would benefit by focusing on pro-cedures underpinning dynamic interactivity. A third objective is to examine whether ‘narratological’ account...","PeriodicalId":334979,"journal":{"name":"Intell.
