Low cost NFC scanner subsystems are anticipated to be widely incorporated in coming generations of commodity cellular phones. We consider the potential of this emerging infrastructure to provide convenient and low cost power distribution and communication channels for a range of medical devices. For example, an NFC device within a cell phone could relay measurements collected from a defibrillator-pacemaker to a monitoring physician, remotely control an insulin pump, or activate an implanted neural simulation system. NFC devices pose similar bio-compatibility challenges to other implanted electronics without requiring the provisioning of battery power to support communication. Furthermore, an NFC communication subsystem's power-independence provides a measure of defense against potential denial-of-service attacks that consume power in order to discharge a capacity-limited power source. The 13.56 MHz band has minimal interaction with human and animal tissues. We conducted several successful proof-of- concept experiments communicating with with ISO 14443 tags implanted at multiple locations within a human cadaver. Magnetic field strength decays with the cube of distance-to- antenna, limiting limits the range of potential eavesdroppers. At present, NFC protocols do not provide an appropriate set of privacy properties for implanted medical applications. However, NFC devices are implemented using embedded general purpose processors and thus only software modifications would be required to support protocol extensions with enhanced privacy.","PeriodicalId":333843,"journal":{"name":"2007 IEEE Dallas Engineering in Medicine and Biology Workshop","volume":"39 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"117234017","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Therefore, it has become a very well studied cell in terms of protein composition and function. RBC proteomic studies performed over the last five years, by several laboratories, have identified 751 proteins within the human erythrocyte. Data describing most of their interactions are also available. This allowed us to assemble a preliminary interactome of the red blood cell. Identifying the role of certain proteins in the development of blood diseases, such as sickle cell disease, remains a challenge. To give future studies the benefit of focusing on a smaller subset of proteins, we consider several measures aimed to computationally establish the relative functional significance of protein members of the interactome.","PeriodicalId":333843,"journal":{"name":"2007 IEEE Dallas Engineering in Medicine and Biology Workshop","volume":"25 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128629523","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, devices that respond to unauthorized queries may inadvertently disclose their presence. It is reasonable for users to expect that their devices' detectability by third parties to be limited, and thus even eavesdroppers to an authorized conversation (e.g. a command sent to an insulin pump) should observe an access code of minimal utility for triggering future transmissions. Access rights should be revocable in a manner that limits that harm that can be caused by authorized devices in the possession of unauthorized users. In order to detect inappropriate use, it may be desirable for access history to be available for audit. We describe a family of replay-attack resistant protocols suitable for embedding into query messages that can authorize users with a range of differentiated access rights. Implanted devices utilizing these techniques can evade detection by suppressing responses to queries that do not contain appropriate authorization. Techniques are described that can support revocation of authorization and audits of access history. Finally, we observe that the processing of unauthorized queries consumes power and thus can be used to mount a potentially devastating denial-of-service attack against the batteries of both conventional devices and devices that utilize the cryptographic protocols we describe. Since field-powered communication systems (e.g. HF-RFID) contain embedded general-purpose processors that operate using only power extracted from externally applied fields, they are substantially more robust against such forms of attack.","PeriodicalId":333843,"journal":{"name":"2007 IEEE Dallas Engineering in Medicine and Biology Workshop","volume":"13 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126398083","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Together, they are minimizing traumatic vehicular morbidity and mortality and upgrading substantially the efficacy of out-of-hospital emergency care. To date, these technologies are often deployed independently, rather than in an integrated \"system\". If they were deployed as an \"intelligent suite\", with all components cross-compatible, EMS of the near future would be dramatically more effective than that of the recent past. The present analysis is a synopsis of a 1990 motor vehicle accident reconstructed from actual EMS run data. A hypothetical comparative call has been constructed, set in similar fashion but integrating currently-available ICT components. Deploying today's ICT arsenal as a coherent system results in dramatically decreased dispatch, en route, and response times, and blurs the distinction between the need for transport and the need for adequate medical treatment. The significance of the legendary \"golden hour\" is effectively eclipsed.","PeriodicalId":333843,"journal":{"name":"2007 IEEE Dallas Engineering in Medicine and Biology Workshop","volume":"154 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116444071","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The system illuminates the amputation area with a cold broadband light source, collects a series of spectroscopic images that are deconvoluted using chemometric methods for imaging the spatial distribution of inherent chromophores. Surface coating with extracellular matrix (ECM) proteins is a well described method used for modifying surface properties of biomaterials in order to encourage cell growth. However, optimization of ECM proteins to promote the adhesion and growth of Human Aortic Endothelial Cells (HAEC) has not been well-investigated. In this study, we compared the effect of common ECM proteins such as fibronectin, collagen, laminin, vitronectin, and matrigel on the HAEC adhesion and growth on PLLA materials. It was found that fibronectin not only had the highest cell adhesion and proliferation, but also maintained normal cell morphology and endothelial cell function. Moreover, endothelial cells remained better on this surface under physiological shear stress levels. These results suggested fibronectin is the best ECM protein to promote endothelialization on PLLA materials.","PeriodicalId":333843,"journal":{"name":"2007 IEEE Dallas Engineering in Medicine and Biology Workshop","volume":"39 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131132361","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Floating point DSP hardware with high sampling rates are used to ascertain the effectiveness of ANC in a real-time application containing high sound pressure levels (SPL). Secondary paths are also calculated and updated as necessary. The results presented use a realistic primary path of an fMRI bore simulated by a half cylindrical acrylic bore of 0.76 m (D) x 1.52 m (L). Detailed results of the performance of the ANC system are presented in the paper. The results were obtained by using an automated system, designed to systematically test any frequency range with high precision. Our experiments show that the LMS algorithm gives the best performance with good stability for single-tone noise but RLS algorithm shows better performance for fMRI noise.","PeriodicalId":333843,"journal":{"name":"2007 IEEE Dallas Engineering in Medicine and Biology Workshop","volume":"46 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122929707","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

An electrical pulse applied to the piezoelectric microdispenser causes a drop of fluid to be ejected through a precise orifice. An electronic console actuates the piezoelectric dispensing elements and controls the number of drops that are dispensed and evaporated to create a fragrance cloud. The number of drops that are generated, evaporated and presented to the patient's nose for detection is adjusted according to a preset algorithm until the patient's smell threshold is discovered. Neurodegenerative disease patients tested with the developed olfactometer showed a significant elevation of their olfactory threshold as compared to normal controls. This result agrees with literature studies that indicate the sense of smell is one of the first affected by neurodegenerative disease. Through its precise control and detection capability, the digital olfactometer described in this paper can be used as an early screening tool for neurodegenerative diseases through olfactory threshold determination.","PeriodicalId":333843,"journal":{"name":"2007 IEEE Dallas Engineering in Medicine and Biology Workshop","volume":"59 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-11-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132202297","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
