The latest image codec JPEG-2000 is implemented [2000], and a peer-to-peer transceiver model is established for wireless transmission. The standard test images are compressed by the codec within the transceiver, and subsequently transmitted from peer to peer over IEEE 802.11b wireless LAN (Wi-Fi) [1999] and General Packet Radio Service (GPRS) [1998] networks. For Wi-Fi, due to its substantially high data rate, image transmission time is not as critical. For GPRS, due to the restricted data rate and power resources, it is meaningful to investigate the performance of image transmission over GPRS-involved wireless links. Therefore, in this paper, JPEG-2000 images are compressed in lossy mode and transmitted over GPRS-GPRS and GPRS-Wi-Fi links. Since network usage time and amount of data transferred are cost-determining factors, transmission times for various compression ratios are recorded. Levels of compression can be evaluated using both objective and subjective criteria, yet subjective criteria is more dominant for the smaller screen-size and lower processing power of GPRS-supported devices","PeriodicalId":333629,"journal":{"name":"The Ninth International Conference onCommunications Systems, 2004. This makes the combined structure suitable for adaptive filter bank implementation and for parallel processing. On the other hand, the system performance is effectively improved by diversity combining. The analysis and simulation results show that the combined MMSE receiver is capable of very high data rate transmission based on IEEE 802.15.3a channel model recommendation (J. Dynamic bandwidth assignment (DBA) provides statistical multiplexing between the optical network units for upstream channel utilization. To satisfy various QoS requirements, it is important to provide QoS guaranteed network access while utilizing the bandwidth efficiently. We propose a QoS-enabled dynamic bandwidth assignment algorithm for differentiated service in Ethernet passive optical networks. The new DBA algorithm is based on the weights of the different classes and the current queue information to perform better per class bandwidth allocation. The specific QoS requirements of various classes are mapped into deterministic effective bandwidth and then used to assign weights accordingly. The medium access controls (MACs) of the PON systems are either based on cyclic rotation or polling mechanism. However, these MACs have inherited a potential problem; the cycle time (or polling cycle in the polling MACs) increases linearly as the number of attached ONUs scale up, which can be caused by increasing customer numbers. The longer cycle time means that the ONUs have to wait longer before the next transmission window arrives thus contributing to longer packet delays and poorer QoS. In this paper, a new WDM PON system is proposed where multiple wavelength channels are established in both upstream and downstream directions. In this paper we propose an asymmetry AWGN (additive white Gaussian noise channel) model. The proposed model simplified the turbo decoder to an RSC decoder. Through the simulation of the proposed model, two mechanisms of the TURBO decoder have been uncovered. First, turbo decoder improves the S/N (signal to noise) rate of systematic code. Second, turbo decoder improves affection of the systematic code. Here we modify the autocorrelation method to deal with multi-tap loop with exponential profile. Analytical and experimental results are presented to verify the advantages and the limitations of the method in such environment. Simulation results show that our proposed scheme outperforms the conventional carrier-sense multiple access with collision detection (CSMA/CD) MAC protocol in terms of packet delay for high priority (HP) traffic. Carrer","doi":"10.1109/ICCS.2004.1359437","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.1109/ICCS.2004.1359437","url":null,"abstract":"We analyze the log-likelihood ratio (LLR) of the received signal yielded by a soft input/soft output (SISO) front-end decoder, in intensity modulation direct detection (IM/DD) optical channels operating in the presence of amplified spontaneous emission (ASE) noise. We focus on long haul or metro links spanning several hundred kilometers of single mode fibers with optical amplifiers. Unlike in AWGN channels where the LLR is a scaled version of the received sample, our study shows that in IM/DD optical channels with dominant ASE noise the LLR is approximately proportional to the square root of the received signal. Moreover, although Gaussian modeling of the received samples in optical channels has been shown to be inaccurate (e.g., (G. Bosco, et al., 2003), (Y. Cai, et al., 2003)), in this work we show that the LLR yielded by a SISO front-end decoder can be accurately modeled as a Gaussian random variable. Building on this result, we develop an adaptive decoding scheme for block turbo codes (BTC) in IM/DD optical channels. The predictions of our analysis are verified by computer simulations of the bit error rate (BER) for several BTC.
