Various tissue engineering therapies are being investigated and integrated into common oral surgical procedures. Mesenchymal stem cells are multipotent stem cells that can differentiate into many cell types, and dental mesenchymal stem cell populations have been identified from various sources in the oral cavity. Mesenchymal stem cells are being considered as a means of tissue regeneration for various craniofacial structures both in the alveolar ridge itself and in surrounding facial tissues. The aim of this review is to completely and concisely review the current clinical application and use of orally derived stem cells in oral surgery, focusing on application in a clinical setting based on the regenerative potential that these cells possess.","PeriodicalId":333418,"journal":{"name":"Journal Of Oral Medicine And Dental Research","volume":"24 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-05-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126510123","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The properties of natural and chemically modified curcumin (CMC) have been extensively investigated, with strong evidence on its anti-inflammatory, anti-microbial (antibacterial, antiviral, antifungal properties), antioxidant, anti-angiogenic, anti-carcinogenic, antispasmodic, hepato-protective, and wound healing properties. The aim of this review aims to present an overview of the use of curcumin in periodontal therapy and the biological mechanisms behind its properties. Findings from in vitro studies suggest that curcumin can promote osteogenesis, down regulate proteases, promote wound healing, and suppress periodontal bacteria. Results from animal studies suggest the potential of curcumin to reduce periodontal inflammation and alveolar bone loss. The molecular interactions required to generate a tooth are mediated by families of signaling molecules, which often act reiteratively in both a temporal and spatial manner. In humans, the process of odontogenesis lasts approximately 18 years, beginning in the 6th-8th week in the uterus and ending with the formation of the third molars in late adolescence. Each tooth passes through a series of stages that follow the same pattern, beginning with the formation of the bud, then cap and bell, followed by the deposit of enamel and dentin on the crown of the tooth. In this regard, although the pathogenesis of MRONJ is not understood yet, several papers suggest that antiresorptives may play a role in its development [1].
