Recent studies have revealed many complicated cases of obstructed labour from TBAs. TBAs are popular in developing countries. They lack formal education or medical training and some of their clients end up with obstetric complications, which may lead to severe maternal and perinatal morbidity and mortality. Women in the developing world are forty times more likely to die from pregnancy related complications than women living in the industrial world. More than 90% of maternal deaths occur in low income countries where others factors may contribute to the presence of severe postpartum haemorrhage. Most deliveries in Nigeria still occur in the homes of traditional birth attendants. Increased community awareness, promotion of appropriate technology, effective health care, planning starting from the grassroots levels to tertiary levels establishment of a streamlined and effective referral system will help reduce maternal mortality from obstetric emergencies reducing maternal morbidity and mortality are among the key international development goals.","PeriodicalId":331725,"journal":{"name":"The Internet Journal of Tropical Medicine","volume":"27 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-12-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115014418","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The development of obesity and overweight is usually so slow, and insidious that people hardly notice it is happening. It is genetically related, multifactorial disease of excess fat, progressive, life long with life threatening multiple co-morbidity.OBJECTIVE: The aim of this study is to determine the prevalence of obesity among students of an educational institution in Port Harcourt, Nigeria.METHOD: This is a cross sectional study conducted during a medical physical examination exercise by students of an educational institution in Port Harcourt, Nigeria in 2008. Weight was measured in kilograms, height in metres and the body mass index calculated.RESULTS: Students who voluntarily participated in this study were 58. Mean age was 24.66 years, mean weight 67.28kg and mean height 1.73m. Two students were underweight, 48 had ideal body weight, 4 overweight and 4 obese.CONCLUSION: Preventing obesity must always be the goal because most obese people find it difficult to maintain any weight loss they have managed to achieve. All health professionals must be aware of the dangers of obesity and encourage children, young as well as older adults from gaining too much weight. A small gain each year over a long period produces an obese individual for when treatment is difficult.","PeriodicalId":331725,"journal":{"name":"The Internet Journal of Tropical Medicine","volume":"44 2","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-12-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132359489","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It also accepts referred cases, some of whom had no antenatal supervision coming in normal or complicated labour. This study was conducted to assess the impact of lack of supervised antenatal care on the foetal and obstetrical outcomes in Lagos, South Western Nigeria.It was a prospective study and data was obtained from patients and patients’ records.The study subjects were labour cases with no evidence of supervised antenatal care. Controls were the immediate next booked parturients admitted in labour.Sociodemographic data, intrapartum complications, mode of delivery, maternal mortality, puerperal morbidity, estimated blood loss, foetal birth weight, Apgar score, perinatal mortality, duration of hospital stay were recorded.There was a significantly higher incidence of operative and caesarean deliveries as well as mortality among the unbooked patients.Neonatal asphyxia and perinatal deaths were more commonly found in the babies of the unbooked patients.Lack of supervised antenatal care is associated with a significantly worse foeto-maternal outcome in a cosmopolitan setting like Lagos.","PeriodicalId":331725,"journal":{"name":"The Internet Journal of Tropical Medicine","volume":"83 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-12-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131927417","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In the parasitological examination, infection was confirmed in 25 (10%) of the 250 subjects screened. Artesunate were administered orally at 4mg/kg body weight. Adverse effects due to drug reactions were assessed 3 days after medication and all perceived symptoms of illness were treated. The cure rate was evaluated after 2 weeks of treatment. There cure rate was 16 (64.0%) after treatment. There was a significant reduction in prevalence from a pre-treatment value of 10% to a post-treatment value of 3.6%. The intensity of infection also reduced significantly (p<.001) from 17.2% -3.1% for pre-treatment and post-treatment respectively giving a reduction rate of 82.1%. This study has shown that artesunate is effective in the treatment of schistosomiasis. It is recommended that a combination of artesunate and praziquantel, might produce a more effective treatment than the separate use of either drug.","PeriodicalId":331725,"journal":{"name":"The Internet Journal of Tropical Medicine","volume":"50 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-12-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114565594","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Effective treatment of meningococcal meningitis depends on administration of appropriate antibiotics. The study reviewed the antibiotic susceptibility pattern of bacterial pathogens implicated in meningococcal meningitis in the study area.Methods: This is a retrospective study conducted during the epidemic period (January –May 2009). The CSF specimens were examined by standard bacteriological methodsResults: Of the 110 CSF specimen examined, 54 (49.1%) were positive by Gram-reaction, 32 (59.3%) yielded bacterial growth, with Niesseria meningitidis, 25 (78.1%), Strep. pneumoniae 4 (12.5), coliforms 2(6.3%), and S.aureus 1(3.1). Twelve of the 25 N. meningitidis were recovered from children aged less than 60 months with youngest less than 2 months. From the study the bacterial isolates were susceptible to ceftriaxone (100%), chloramphenicol (92.3%) and penicillin (50%) respectively.Conclusion; The high sensitivity of the organisms to ceftriaxone (100%) and chloramphenicol (92.3%) as observed in this study is in support of their use as first-line antibiotics in the treatment of epidemic meningococcal meningitis as advocated by the World Health Organization.","PeriodicalId":331725,"journal":{"name":"The Internet Journal of Tropical Medicine","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2009-12-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130248421","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
