But if a transformer internal grounding fault (TIGF)occurs in networks(such as turn-to-ground fault), spark catcher action makes both ends of the fault windings grounded which results to transformer internal winding short and further leads to the transformer burning. So how to discriminate line faults from transformer internal faults becomes a crucial issue waiting to be solved urgently in small current neutral grounding system. In this paper the zero sequence current (ZSC) distribution and negative sequence current (NSC) distribution are analyzed respectively in above two situations. The PTGF and TIGF can be discriminated accurately. A new spark catcher controlling method based on ZSC distribution and NSC distribution is proposed in this paper.","PeriodicalId":330758,"journal":{"name":"IEEE PES Innovative Smart Grid Technologies","volume":"71 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-05-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127600517","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In order to suppress the interfacing unit output current harmonics around integral multiple switching frequency more effectively, LCL filter is introduced to substitute the traditional L filter. However, LCL filter, a third-order system, may cause the control system unstable. For this, in the grid interfacing power conversion system, an additional capacitor current closed-loop is added to the conventional dual closed-loop scheme, where the capacitor current feedback signal is obtained through estimation. The system stability is ensured with no more additional sensors, at the same time both the filtering performance and system efficiency are increased compared with the traditional passive damping method. In addition, the design procedure of the output filter and the grid synchronization are specified. Effectiveness and feasibility of the grid interfacing power conversion system are verified by both the simulation and experimental results.","PeriodicalId":330758,"journal":{"name":"IEEE PES Innovative Smart Grid Technologies","volume":"209 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-05-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133486497","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The proposed Cycloconverter improves Power Quality by reducing Total Harmonic Distortion (THD) of input line current, input Power Factor (Pf) and overall Efficiency (η) of the power conversion. Traditional twelve thyristor (SCR) cycloconverter has high THD (19% and above) and has only two quadrant operation on V~f plane. The proposed Cycloconverter has a lower THD (15% and below), requires only eight switches and it has the advantage of four quadrant control of voltage and frequency. Simulation has been performed in PSIM and Simulink for resistive and inductive loads with Back-emf. Open loop sliding Technique is applied to ensure good power quality at desired performance. Details of Operation and circuit performance is presented in this paper.","PeriodicalId":330758,"journal":{"name":"IEEE PES Innovative Smart Grid Technologies","volume":"44 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-05-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133772656","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The paper builds the mathematical model for solving unit commitment of power system with wind farms, which contains a bi-objective function considering both cost and emissions and up/down spinning reserve constraints of the system; simultaneously, the article uses a Quantum-inspired Binary PSO (QBPSO) for the regular unit on/off problem and the primal-dual interior point method for economic load dispatch problem. In addition, the paper deploys new heuristic adjusted regulations to ensure the whole algorithm to search the optimal particle in the feasible region. The proposed method is applied to power systems which are composed of up to 40-units with 24-h demand horizon and a certain proportion of wind farms. The simulation results show that considering both cost and emissions can not only guarantee the reliability and efficiency of power generation, but also be coincident with the environment requirements, making the unit commitment results more reasonable.","PeriodicalId":330758,"journal":{"name":"IEEE PES Innovative Smart Grid Technologies","volume":"41 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-05-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132216222","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This paper studied three-phase symmetrical short circuit current characteristics of DFIG with crowbar protection in depth, and simulations have been made in PSCAD/EMTDC. The analysis and simulation results show that, the output short circuit current concerns with crowbar resistance, dc-link voltage clamp effect and control strategies of the grid side converter (GSC). Short circuit current characteristics of a DFIG wind turbine become complicated because of the responses of GSC, when the dc-link clamp effect occurs. The GSC will also provide a high current to the short circuit point. However, when necessary restrictions have been introduced, short circuit current of DFIG wind turbine can be substituted by stator winding short circuit current of the DFIG whether the dc-link clamp effect occurs or not. Thus, on the basis of previous analysis results, we got short circuit current expressions of a DFIG under no dc-link clamp effect, when short circuit occurred at the normal operation. And an impedance voltage source model was proposed and has been verified at last.","PeriodicalId":330758,"journal":{"name":"IEEE PES Innovative Smart Grid Technologies","volume":"30 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-05-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134290031","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To cope with this growing trend, it is necessary for the customers to pay attention to the strategies in employing multiple generators or sharing generators. In such circumstances, optimal operation methods for multiple generators and the estimation of the proper capacity of generators can become an important role. In our study, new methods to operate these generators and determine the optimal capacity of generators are investigated and the annual running cost and the amount of CO2 emissions are calculated. This research supposes the commercial facility as model for case study which equips a gas engine, a fuel cell, a gas chiller, and a gas boiler. A novel aging failure rate evaluation method based on evidence theory is proposed. Transformer is taken as an example to illustrate the proposed method, because the transformers have been widely used online condition monitors. The operational states of a transformer can be classified into four degrees according to IEEE standards. An evaluation method is proposed to identify the operational state of a transformer by combining the data collected from condition monitors, which is based on evidence theory. Hidden Markov Models are used to model the aging process of a transformer, while the transition rate in the models can be obtained from the historical data. The time-varying aging failure rate function can be derived by solving the Markov state equation. A real example is presented to demonstrate the proposed method reasonable.","PeriodicalId":330758,"journal":{"name":"IEEE PES Innovative Smart Grid Technologies","volume":"16 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2012-05-21","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134114863","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
