We observe that a wide variety of design objectives and constraints have a special form, i.e., they are (either approximately or exactly) posynomial functions of the design variables. Therefore an MSM-PD geometry with fast response speed can be determined by solving a special form of optimization problem called posynomial programming, for which very efficient global optimization methods have been developed. Our method, therefore, yields automated finger sizing of MSM-PD, directly from specifications.","PeriodicalId":330382,"journal":{"name":"2007 Thirty-Ninth Southeastern Symposium on System Theory","volume":"59 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-03-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124392085","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The Tetwalker consists of arms, or struts, that join at nodes to form a tetrahedron. The struts will be able to lengthen and shorten, thereby giving the Tetrahedron shape-shifting abilities. The robot will move by changing the strut length to change its center of mass, causing it to tumble. Another benefit of such a robot is that when multiple units are combined, it is able to assume more complex shapes. This project focuses specifically on the third generation Tetwalker (the 12-Tetwalker), which consists of twelve tetrahedral robots combined to form a cube with the ability to carry a payload in the center. The intention is to use this robot for the exploration of extreme environments, such as the Martian and Lunar surfaces. The focus of this subset of the project was to implement Homayoun Seraji's decentralized adaptive controller (DAC) to the robot. This would lessen the need for a centralized brain that would control each strut, which would be very complicated and impractical to implement for such a device. The DAC would allow each strut to independently extend to its proper position in the current gait. The DAC was to be implemented in MATLAB as well as in C for the PIC18F6627 microcontroller. The DAC would be tested by using the PUMA 560 model presented in Seraji's paper. After this initial testing of the DAC, the DAC will be tested on a model for the 12-Tetwalker.","PeriodicalId":330382,"journal":{"name":"2007 Thirty-Ninth Southeastern Symposium on System Theory","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-03-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130372672","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

As a basic algorithm for ANC, the LMS algorithm has been used for its simplicity. However, the LMS algorithm has problems of both convergence speed and estimation accuracy in real-time environment. In order to solve these problems, the VSSLMS algorithm for ANC is considered in a nonstationary environment. By computer simulation using real-time data acquisition system (USB 6009), the VSSLMS algorithm turns out to be more effective than the LMS algorithm in both convergence speed and estimation accuracy, especially for the colored input signal used in ANC of engine noise.","PeriodicalId":330382,"journal":{"name":"2007 Thirty-Ninth Southeastern Symposium on System Theory","volume":"23 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-03-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127990855","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Due to their ability to perform complex, multiple tasks with biochemicals, such devices have many applications, especially in the biomedicine area and are expected to continue generating interest. However, due to the need for handling micro-scale flow of liquids and the diverse nature of microfluidic devices, some of the major challenges in their development are the establishment of chip-to-world fluidic interconnects and device packaging. This paper reports on the development of a generic fluidic interconnect methodology based on assembly and plugging-in of the components. This approach greatly simplifies the currently difficult task of implementing fluidic connections and provides an integration capability that facilitates the experimental development of microfluidic devices.","PeriodicalId":330382,"journal":{"name":"2007 Thirty-Ninth Southeastern Symposium on System Theory","volume":"22 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-03-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121602992","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Such perturbations occur continuously on the system because of the small variations in load and generation where the system continuously adjusts itself to changing conditions. Restoring forces acting on the machines help them to maintain stable conditions. The system must be able to operate satisfactorily under these conditions and successfully supply the maximum amount of load. The \"small signal\" disturbances are considered sufficiently small for linearization of system equations to be permissible for the purpose of analysis. A general method, with all the preliminary steps, to perform small signal stability studies is presented in this paper. The approach presented is applied to the IEEE 118 bus system.","PeriodicalId":330382,"journal":{"name":"2007 Thirty-Ninth Southeastern Symposium on System Theory","volume":"82 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-03-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115203101","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The number of gaps (defects) among the beads on the pattern surface is used as the quality estimator, since the surface defects are the main cause of micro fatigue cracks in castings. The foam patterns images obtained have poor contrast and contain different objects other than the defects. The proposed image processing and analysis technique consists of three stages. The first stage is enhancement step to remove the undesirable illumination variations by using the bottom-hat filter. In the second stage, morphological operators and multilevel thresholding segmentation technique are applied to detect and segment regions of interest on the surface of the foam pattern. The last step is feature extraction and quantitative analysis. The classification process is done according to the area of the surface defects. All the recognized objects are divided into groups based on the minimum and the maximum defects area. The ratio between the total area in each group and the total surface area of the foam pattern is calculated and presented as a surface quality measure of the foam pattern. Experimental results carried out on different patterns demonstrate that the proposed method is a reliable and accurate technique for detecting the surface defects of the foam pattern.","PeriodicalId":330382,"journal":{"name":"2007 Thirty-Ninth Southeastern Symposium on System Theory","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-03-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132264010","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The designed partial state feedback controller is singularity free, and guarantees asymptotic tracking of smooth reference trajectories for the speed of the motor under time varying load torque. The new control algorithm generates estimates for unknown time varying load torque and rotor flux which asymptotically tracks and converges to their true values. The rotor flux modulus asymptotically tracks a desired reference signal which allows the motor to operate within its specifications. As in the field-oriented control scheme, the control algorithm generates references for the magnetizing flux component and for the speed component of the stator current. The control strategy yields decoupled rotor speed and rotor flux amplitude tracking control goals.","PeriodicalId":330382,"journal":{"name":"2007 Thirty-Ninth Southeastern Symposium on System Theory","volume":"191 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2007-03-04","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115293855","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The techniques used for fabricating traditional microelectronic devices are not always applicable for macroelectronic devices. This paper investigates several approaches to precisely pattern metals and metallic thin films on flexible substrates. These approaches include photolithographic and non-photolithographic techniques. We have successfully accomplished precise patterning of metal thin Alms on flexible substrates made of polyimide (PI) and polyethyleneterephthalate (PET).
