However, they require correct unwrapping of phase images to reconstruct depth accurately. For time varying scenes, it is important for the phase unwrapped results to be temporally coherent. In this paper, we propose a spatio-temporal phase unwrapping algorithm for a structured light system made of a projector and a pair of stereo cameras. Unlike existing frame by frame spatial domain approaches, our proposed algorithm results in a temporally consistent three-dimensional unwrapped phase volume for time varying scenes. We experimentally show the effectiveness of our approach in recovering absolute phase for scenes with multiple disjoint objects, significant motion, and large depth discontinuities.","PeriodicalId":330003,"journal":{"name":"2011 International Conference on 3D Imaging, Modeling, Processing, Visualization and Transmission","volume":"26 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-05-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133537633","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Throughout the last decades, a wide range of different approaches have emerged, each one endowed with different strengths and limitations. Some techniques adopt tags that are optimized to reach a high accuracy in the recovered camera pose, others are based on designs that aim to maximizing the detection speed or minimizing the effect of occlusion on the detection process. Most of them, however, employ a two step procedure where an initial homography estimation is used to translate the marker from the image plane to an orthonormal world where it is validated and recognized. With this paper, we present a general purpose fiducial marker system that allows to perform both steps directly in image-space. Specifically, by exploiting projective invariants such as collinearity and cross ratios, we introduce a detection and recognition algorithm that is fast, accurate and moderately robust to occlusion. The overall performance of the system is evaluated in an extensive experimental section, where a comparison with a well-known baseline technique is presented.","PeriodicalId":330003,"journal":{"name":"2011 International Conference on 3D Imaging, Modeling, Processing, Visualization and Transmission","volume":"24 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-05-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131039767","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The mass-spring model is known for its accuracy but slowness. The proposed technique tackles the computation burden of the model by developing a linearization solution for the bending function. The proposed technique is about six times faster than the traditional technique of directly evaluating the complex physical models. The detailed of the proposed technique and its experimental results are discussed in this paper.","PeriodicalId":330003,"journal":{"name":"2011 International Conference on 3D Imaging, Modeling, Processing, Visualization and Transmission","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-05-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115233942","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In digital human modeling, it can be applied to predicting human body shape from images, measurements, or descriptive features. While images and measurements can be converted to numerical values, it is difficult to assign numerical values to descriptive features and therefore regression based methods cannot be applied. In this work, we propose to use Predictive Clustering Trees (PCT) to predict human body shapes from demographic information. We build PCTs using a dataset of demographic attributes and body shape descriptors. We demonstrate empirically that the PCT-based method has similar predicting power as the numerical approaches using body measurements. The PCTs also reveal interesting structures of the training dataset and provide interpretations of the body shape variations from the perspective of the demographic attributes.","PeriodicalId":330003,"journal":{"name":"2011 International Conference on 3D Imaging, Modeling, Processing, Visualization and Transmission","volume":"32 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-05-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123440805","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The massive point clouds they generate, however, present challenges to efficient modeling and visualization. State-of-the-art techniques for generating 3D models from voluminous range data is well-known to demand large computational and storage requirements. In this paper, attention is directed to the modeling of urban buildings directly from range data. We present an efficient modeling algorithm that exploits a priori knowledge that buildings can be modeled from cross-sectional contours using extrusion and tapering operations. Inspired by this simple workflow, we identify key cross-sectional slices among the point cloud. These slices capture changes across the building facade along the principal axes. Standard image processing algorithms are used to remove noise, fill missing data, and vectorize the projected points into planar contours. Applying extrusion and tapering operations to these contours permits us to achieve dramatic geometry compression, making the resulting models suitable for web-based applications such as Google Earth or Microsoft Virtual Earth. This work has applications in architecture, urban design, virtual city touring, and online gaming. We present experimental results on synthetic and real urban building datasets to validate the proposed algorithm.","PeriodicalId":330003,"journal":{"name":"2011 International Conference on 3D Imaging, Modeling, Processing, Visualization and Transmission","volume":"21 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-05-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128714582","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Biunique correspondence is introduced to enhance the performance of ICP by searching multiple closest points. A new kind of outlier is defined, called No-Correspondence (NC) Outlier, which is the point that is not assigned to a biunique correspondence. In order to maintain efficiency, a coarse-to-fine approach is adopted. Experiments show that the proposed algorithm can find the correct rigid transformation with the existence of large non-overlapping area and poor initial alignment. The proposed algorithm is also applied to SLAM with the use of odometry information.","PeriodicalId":330003,"journal":{"name":"2011 International Conference on 3D Imaging, Modeling, Processing, Visualization and Transmission","volume":"16 5 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-05-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125784578","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Our algorithm consists of two novel components. First, we apply a modified two-pass aggregation to the adaptive cost aggregation process, use color similarity to calculate support weight, and introduce a credibility estimation mechanism to reduce accuracy loss during two-pass aggregation. Second, we present an amended scan-line optimization technique, which combines winner-take-all and dynamic programming. Our algorithm runs at 20 fps on 320×240 video with a disparity search range of 24. The experimental results are evaluated on the Middlebury benchmark data sets, showing that our method achieves the best reconstruction accuracy among all real-time stereo algorithms.","PeriodicalId":330003,"journal":{"name":"2011 International Conference on 3D Imaging, Modeling, Processing, Visualization and Transmission","volume":"59 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-05-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126978124","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Our approach complements Structure-from-Motion and image-based analysis with a 'inverse' procedural modeling strategy. So far, procedural modeling has mostly been used for creation of virtual buildings, while the inverse approaches typically focus on reconstruction of single facades. In our work, we reconstruct complete buildings as procedural models using template shape grammars. In the reconstruction process, we let the grammar interpreter automatically decide on which step to take next. The process can be seen as instantiating the template by determining the correct grammar parameters. As an example, we have chosen the reconstruction of Greek Doric temples. This process significantly differs from single facade segmentation due to the immediate need for 3D reconstruction.","PeriodicalId":330003,"journal":{"name":"2011 International Conference on 3D Imaging, Modeling, Processing, Visualization and Transmission","volume":"209 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-05-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132284437","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Based on the hypothesis that the discriminability among different targets plays an important role in improving the tracking performance, we choose different feature spaces for every target in the scene to insure the discriminability from other targets. In order to adapt to continuously changing appearance, we propose to adjust the updating ratio of the model according to the change of motion direction. We propose a two-level tracking algorithm to track and segment multi-target, which integrates our discriminative appearance model into a probabilistic data association framework. Our tracking algorithm is more effective and efficient. Tracking results on the public dataset PETS2009, compared with the conventional appearance model in the same feature space, show a great improvement, especially in segmenting much more accurately during occlusions and reducing identity switches more significantly.","PeriodicalId":330003,"journal":{"name":"2011 International Conference on 3D Imaging, Modeling, Processing, Visualization and Transmission","volume":"34 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-05-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131930075","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It may for instance be used to differentiate between the outside and the inside (lumen) of wood fibre. Since the image acquisition introduces noise, some kind of smoothing is required to obtain accurate estimates of curvature. However, in these materials, the fibres of interest are frequently both thin and densely packed. In this paper, we show how existing methods fail to accurately capture curvature information under these circumstances. Maintained resolution and smoothing of noise are two competing goals. In some situations, existing methods will even estimate the wrong signs of the principal curvatures. We also present a novel method, which is shown to have better performance in several experiments. This new method will generically produce better curvature estimates for thin objects and objects in close proximity.","PeriodicalId":330003,"journal":{"name":"2011 International Conference on 3D Imaging, Modeling, Processing, Visualization and Transmission","volume":"4 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2011-05-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133914532","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
