The article begins with a brief description of the relevance of its topic, taking into account the state of current researches in the field of translation studies. A literature review of recent publications where the think aloud method and think-aloud protocols as the principal introspective and retrospective method in different translation studies is given. The shortcomings and advantages of applying the think aloud method are discussed and the ways to optimise the use of this method for effective verbal data gathering are suggested. The main body of the paper consists of the detailed description of the think aloud method within the framework of the experimental research on the strategic competence of the Ukrainian students majoring in translation studies at Yurii Fedkovych Chernivtsi National University. The author presents the participants of the experiment and briefly explains the choice of the translation tasks used for the experimental research. The analysis of the texts selected for the experimental translation research is discussed. The procedure of gathering verbal reports from the participants of the experimental group is described. The author gives detailed instructions on how to prepare participants of an experimental research at the introductory phase for using the think aloud method, how a researcher should behave during an interview, how to make audio and video recording, how to remind participants of an experimental group to think aloud, etc. The results of the conducted experimental research as well as the analysis of the gathered verbal data are presented. It is shown how verbal data can serve as a means of analysis of Ukrainian-speaking students’ strategic competence. Some practical examples illustrate the unique characteristics of the verbal data inherent to the participants of the experimental group. Майєр","doi":"10.32589/1817-8510.2019.1.157610","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.32589/1817-8510.2019.1.157610","url":null,"abstract":"A key prerequisite for effective developing of preservice foreign language and culture teachers’ test competence lies in correct choice of teaching approaches, taking into account ultimate educational goals and conditions, as well as students’ command of basic methodological knowledge and skills. This article substantiates the expediency of using a number of approaches to forming preservice foreign language and culture teachers’ test competence and formulates the principles that promote their effective implementation in the educational process at the first (Bachelor’s) level in higher education institutions. The competency-based approach is aimed at developing students’ abilities to apply the acquired methodological knowledge in their practical professional and methodo-logical activities on designing, organising and implementing language testing to check students’ level of foreign language communicative competence and is realised on the basis of such principles as modelling professional and methodo-logical activities of a language teacher, implementing educational content through the use of acceptable forms, methods and means of developing test competence. The learner-centered approach is realised in the unity of its components on the basis of the principle of students’ individualities priority as a subject of their learning and teaching, the principle of selecting the educational content taking into account language test planning and organisіng peculiarities, the principle of diverse use of information and communication technologies. The project-based approach provides students involvement in project activities. The specific methodological principle of its implementation is determined by the principle of using individual project assignments for summative evaluation of students’ test competence. The reflexive approach ensures methodo-logical reflection formation and development, and the major principles of its implementation are determined by the principle of applying different teaching methods for developing methodological reflection, the principle of providing students with means of self-assessment of learning process and results. Визначено чинники, які зумовлюють актуальність дослідження проблеми підготовки викладачів перекладу. До них віднесено соціальне замовлення суспільства на професійних письмових та усних перекладачів, необхідність у кваліфікованих викладачах перекладу, зміни сучасної парадигми освіти, посилення значення самостійної роботи в навчальному процесі та недостатній ступінь наукової розробленості проблеми методичної підготовки майбутніх філологів до викладання усного та письмового перекладу. Проведено аналіз наукових праць, у яких досліджено психологічні, дидактичні, перекладознавчі та методичні аспекти підготовки викладачів перекладу. Виявлено, що багато теоретичних і практичних питань є невирішеними. У стадії розробки залишається питання структури методичної компетентності викладача перекладу, проблема організації аудиторної і самостійної роботи студентів, спрямованої на формування в них методичної компетентності у викладанні перекладу, критерії добору та організації навчального матеріалу, система вправ та завдань для формування методичної компетентності майбутніх філологів у викладанні перекладу, критерії оцінювання рівня сформованості зазначеної компетентності. Показано, що в існуючих дослідженнях не враховано найсучасніших вимог до рівня підготовки викладачів усного і письмового перекладу. Доведено доцільність урахування компетентнісного підходу у фаховій підготовці викладачів перекладу, що відповідає міжнародним освітнім стандартам. Обґрунтовано, що формування методичної компетентності майбутніх філологів у викладанні усного і письмового перекладу відбувається системно, що передбачає визначення цілей, принципів, змісту підготовки викладачів перекладу, видів аудиторної і самостійної роботи з оволодіння методичною компетентністю, розробку системи вправ та завдань тощо.
