The decoding algorithm is inherently parallelizable, allowing communication at high speeds. One of the main disadvantages, however, is large memory requirements for interim storing of decoding data. In this paper, we investigate the performance of a hybrid decoding algorithm, using an approximating early decision algorithm and a regular probability propagation algorithm. When the early decision algorithm fails, the block is re-decoded using a probability propagation decoder. As almost all errors are detectable, the error correction performance of the hybrid algorithm is negligibly detonated. However, simulations still achieve a 32% decrease of memory accesses","PeriodicalId":326489,"journal":{"name":"Conference Record of the Thirty-Ninth Asilomar Conference onSignals, Systems and Computers, 2005.","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130278921","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The standard uses a new DCT-like integer transform (Int-DCT) which is an integer orthogonal approximation to the classical DCT. The objective of using integer coefficients is to provide a completely reversible transform and also reduce the implementation complexity. The main disadvantage is that it increases the quantizer complexity and, consequently, the hardware costs. In this paper we present a new error-free encoding, based on algebraic integers, for a classical DCT and its hardware implementation. This can be used as an alternative transform for H.264 encoders, which results in a simple, parallel, and multiplication-free architecture, and also minimizes the complexity of the quantizer and the dynamic range of the computations. We propose an initial FPGA implementation where the system can process around 1650 Mpixel/sec, and satisfies all real time constraints for digital multimedia applications","PeriodicalId":326489,"journal":{"name":"Conference Record of the Thirty-Ninth Asilomar Conference onSignals, Systems and Computers, 2005.","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134188870","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This paper proposes a new multiple-input-multiple-output (MIMO) signal model for half-duplex, decode-and-forward cooperative links with multiple relays and derives the instantaneous capacity for coherent relaying when full channel state information is available at source, destination and relay nodes. At the same time, analyzes the optimum relay selection and power allocation for such relaying scheme, showing that capacity achieving strategy does not make use of all potential relays within the networks. Results on this paper suggest logarithmic growth of the capacity with the total number of network users, i.e. potential relays, and better performance for the low SNR regime. Moreover, they show important spectral efficiency gains for small number of co- operating nodes, making relaying diversity practically attractive. Finally, comparison with space-time coded cooperation depicts the influence of channel state information in cooperative links.","PeriodicalId":326489,"journal":{"name":"Conference Record of the Thirty-Ninth Asilomar Conference onSignals, Systems and Computers, 2005.","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133931838","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We consider deploying two transmit and two receive antennas in a WLAN system and double the maximum data rate to 108 Mbps. Applying our recent multiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) transceiver designs, including the geometric mean decomposition (GMD) and the uniform channel decomposition (UCD) schemes, we propose a simple and efficient closed-loop MIMO-OFDM design for much improved performance compared to its open-loop counterpart. The extra cost is to feed back unitary precoders, which can be made very moderate with careful precoder quantization.","PeriodicalId":326489,"journal":{"name":"Conference Record of the Thirty-Ninth Asilomar Conference onSignals, Systems and Computers, 2005.","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131247678","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We address two main issues: (1) distributed fusion: how to achieve a global decision without transmitting the information (measurements or local decisions) from all the sensors to a common central location like in parallel architectures; and (2) connectivity graph: what should be the connectivity pattern among the sensors, in other words, with which sensors should each sensor communicate. This is a nontrivial question since it corresponds to designing the structure of a graph to achieve a given goal. For the first issue, we propose an iterative algorithm that fuses the data globally without the need for collecting them at one central location. For the second issue, we present a design methodology based on \"small world\" network engines that leads to connectivity patterns that provide fast convergence to the distributed detection algorithm. Results show that introducing 10% to 30% randomness in the connectivity graph leads to significant improvements over both regular patterns and totally random networks","PeriodicalId":326489,"journal":{"name":"Conference Record of the Thirty-Ninth Asilomar Conference onSignals, Systems and Computers, 2005.","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130971142","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

CPM also has the advantage of being bandwidth efficient and compatible with non-linear amplifiers. The downfall of CPM systems is their poor performance over ISI channels. We propose an iterative receiver incorporating an interference canceller (IC) for serially concatenated continuous phase modulation (SCCPM) over known ISI channels. Two system architectures are investigated in this paper: Either linear amplify-and-forward relays (LinRel) or a distributed antenna system with linear processing (LDAS) serve as repeaters. The gain factors of the repeaters are assigned such that the mean squared error (MSE) of the signal at the destinations is minimised (multiuser MMSE relaying). A scalar multiplier γm ∈ C at each destination m allows for received signals that are scaled and rotated versions of the transmitted symbols. We distinguish two cases: 1) The factors are equal for all destinations: γm = γ. 2) An individual factor γm is chosen for each destination m. Multiuser MMSE relaying essentially realizes a distributed spatial multiplexing gain with single antenna nodes as all source/destination pairs can communicate concurrently over the same physical channel. The main contribution of this paper is the derivation of the MMSE gain factors. We evaluate the relaying scheme in comparison to multiuser zero forcing (ZF) (1) and show that it can outperform the latter in terms of average sum rate and diversity gain. First, the space of commonly used quantization matrices is statistically characterized using over 15000 image files. The insights from this characterization are used to design the algorithm. The two stage algorithm first applies a new sequential estimation process to determine some individual Q matrix entries, and then applies shape-gain vector quantization to recover complete quantization matrices. Low average absolute error values are found for 124 images not used during training. In addition, the estimated Q matrices work well when applied to compression artifact reduction.","PeriodicalId":326489,"journal":{"name":"Conference Record of the Thirty-Ninth Asilomar Conference onSignals, Systems and Computers, 2005.","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116244949","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Several researchers have proposed iterative algorithms whose internal data are carry-save numbers. This number system is unfortunately not well suited to today’s Field Programmable Gate Arrays (FPGAs) embedding dedicated carry logic. We propose to perform modular multiplication in a high-radix carry-save number system, where the sum bit of the well-known carry-save representation is replaced by a sum word. Two digits are then added by means of a small Carry-Ripple Adder (CRA). The originality of our approach is to analyze the modulus in order to select the most efficient high-radix carry-save representation.","PeriodicalId":326489,"journal":{"name":"Conference Record of the Thirty-Ninth Asilomar Conference onSignals, Systems and Computers, 2005.","volume":null,"pages":null},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1900-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116336240","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Previously it has been shown that the energy equalization approach (EEA), and a metric that uses EEA as a model output variable (MOV) together with standard five MOVs of the PEAQ advanced version, outperforms over PEAQ metric alone for measuring low bitrate audio quality. In this paper, we show that the latter approach also performs better than both PEAQ advanced version and EEA alone for measuring mid quality audio.
