Known methods for Design Decisions Rationale Documentation (DDRD) are aimed to maximize the benefits for practitioners who should utilize the DDRD by imposing the burden on the developers of documenting all the potentially useful information. In our view, the adoption of a tailored DDRD, consisting only of the required set of information, would mitigate the effects of DDRD inhibitors. This paper focuses on confirming empirically the feasibility of a value-based approach for documenting the rationale behind design decisions, and the importance of different DDRD information categories. In this context, this work describes a replicated experiment carried out at the University Rey Juan Carlos of Madrid (Spain) aimed to validate previous results from an analogous study conducted at the University of Roma Tor Vergata (Italy). Results confirm that the level of utility related to the same category of DDRD information significantly changes depending on its purpose.","PeriodicalId":325791,"journal":{"name":"Sharing and Reusing Architectural Knowledge","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-05-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130425128","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Currently, this understanding is mired in the minds of software architects who have been there before, and who rely on past intuition and choices, failing to properly document their rationale and context. In this paper we describe a software architecture-based decision making framework called DISCO for selecting data movement technologies, or software connectors. DISCO effectively captures (traditionally undocumented) insight, observation and ultimately architectural knowledge about the connectors, demonstrating the effectiveness of using such information to accurately encode the connector selection decision making process","PeriodicalId":325791,"journal":{"name":"Sharing and Reusing Architectural Knowledge","volume":"66 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-05-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122820753","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To avoid knowledge vaporization, architectural decisions and their rationale need to be documented in a systematic manner. Various works have been done on representing architectural knowledge. Process decisions are one type of design decisions that existing models have paid little attention to. In this paper, we specifically address process decisions in the SOA domain. In doing so, we challenge architectural knowledge representations by mapping two SOA process decisions against a core model of architectural knowledge. The result suggests that existing models need to be extended in order to model SOA process decisions.","PeriodicalId":325791,"journal":{"name":"Sharing and Reusing Architectural Knowledge","volume":"89 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-05-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126387219","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In our earlier work, we had proposed pattern primitives as a solution to precisely model the patterns in the corresponding architectural views. Building upon that approach, this paper introduces a pattern-based architecting process that aims at inexpensively documenting design decisions in the architectural views alongside the natural flow of design. The decisions that are made explicit, concern the selection of patterns, their variants and the corresponding primitives, as well as the resolution of inconsistencies between the architectural views. The approach is demonstrated in the domain of process-driven SOA for two architectural views: Component-and-Connector and Process Flow.","PeriodicalId":325791,"journal":{"name":"Sharing and Reusing Architectural Knowledge","volume":"37 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-05-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122331107","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A fundamental shortcoming in current model-driven approaches is the inability to explicitly capture design decisions and trade-offs between different non-functional parameters, among which timeliness, memory usage, and power consumption are of primary interest. This paper highlights technical limitations in UML to specify complex non-functional evaluation scenarios of candidate architectures, and outlines our current work to provide straightforward solutions.","PeriodicalId":325791,"journal":{"name":"Sharing and Reusing Architectural Knowledge","volume":"79 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-05-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123027422","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, most PLA modeling techniques do not model these concepts explicitly. This requires that the architect express rationale separately, which increases the likelihood that it diverges and slowly but surely loses its value. To address this, we present an approach to capturing rationale that relies on a particular form of PLA modeling, namely PLAs modeled using change sets and relationships. In so doing, we enable the architect to express rationale concerning the PLA at three different tiers, covering individual elements in the PLA, change sets and their raison d'être, and the relationships that govern how individual product architectures are composed.","PeriodicalId":325791,"journal":{"name":"Sharing and Reusing Architectural Knowledge","volume":"101 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-05-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126575899","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
