This study attempts to categorize the event on February 27, 2007, i.e. 9 per cent plunge in Shanghai stock market followed by the $1.5 trillion global market shake out, as irrational, i.e. herd mentality.Design/methodology/approach – To test for this relationship, the Morgan Stanley Capital International daily price index data was collected from April 15, 2002 to April 12, 2007. Daily Dow Jones Industrial Average (DJIA), Nikkei 225 (Nikkei), Hang Seng Index, and the Shanghai Stock Exchange Composite Index (SSECI) were collected from finance.yahoo.com from January 1, 2000 until April 3, 2007. The survey is adapted so that it is suitable to Indian industry. The results of the study are based on descriptive statistics.Findings – The results of this empirical study reflect the reasons for application of six sigma by Indian organizations, the most and least commonly used tools and techniques, critical success factors (CSFs) for the implementation of six sigma, and common impediments in the implementation.Research limitations/implications – This study was carried out with some boundaries such as the number of companies surveyed, time and budget constraints. Kennedy, Jana Schrenkler","doi":"10.1108/01409170910943138","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.1108/01409170910943138","url":null,"abstract":"Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to compare the performance appraisal practices of US subsidiaries in Taiwan to those of their parent firms and to those of large Taiwanese companies in an effort to understand how foreign subsidiaries adjust to the competing demands for global integration and local responsiveness.Design/methodology/approach – A stratified random sampling scheme was employed to ensure that performance appraisal practices of manufacturing firms in similar industry sectors were compared. A mail survey was chosen over other ways of gathering data because of the wide geographical dispersion of companies, the required speed of data collection, and the length of the questionnaire.Findings – The results indicate that performance appraisal is not a uniform function, but consists of practices that differ in their relative resemblance to local practices and to parent practices. Purchasers and inquirers of a car insurance comparison website were approached by personalized email to participate in an online questionnaire. Multi‐group structural equation analysis was used to test for group differences in the structural weights.Findings – Compared to the purchasers, the inquirers were more concerned with the perceived enjoyment, risk and price attractiveness offered by the website, while caring less about time/effort savings. The theoretical framework is supported by two illustrative examples from the aerospace industry. Semi‐structured interviews, observation and template analysis are proposed as suitable data collection and analysis methods.Findings – The paper offers a view on how the PDP is facilitated and/or constrained due to this interweavement. Empirical data are collected using structured surveys of two strategically selected furniture enterprises.
