The data was collected by means of structured classroom observation, field notes, and audio recordings. The findings suggest that code switching is used primarily for a preventive purpose; the explanation is given in L1 because otherwise the lesson would not be understandable for the students, mainly due to the students’ low proficiency level. The instructor alternates languages in order to substitute words and phrases in another language and to emphasize content words and learning points that are the focus of the lesson. Self-repetition is the most frequently used emphasis technique. Furthermore, the lecturer code switches in order to give lucid clarification of difficult concepts and clear confusion, which facilitates learning.","PeriodicalId":325097,"journal":{"name":"Asian Journal of Education and e-Learning","volume":"35 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-04-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132891064","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

These are cognitive skills a teacher should possess for effective teaching in the educational system. But recently non- cognitive skills have been identified or suggested as also having an impact on learning outcomes. This research study examined the effect of teachers’ non-cognitive skills on students’ achievements in the educational system as perceived by students. A questionnaire was developed and administered to a sample of three hundred (300) 2016 fresh undergraduate students at BA ISAGO University, who had just finished from different Senior Secondary Schools in Botswana. The undergraduate students’ responses were subjected to Factor analysis. From the factor analysis, six (6) factors emerged with eigen values greater than one as the most important non-cognitive skills that Botswana teachers should possess which were as follows; Perseverance, Accommodating, Efficiency, Caring, Consideration and motivational skills that were perceived as teachers should possess for effective academic achievements by students. The undergraduate students’ responses were also tested for significance with respect to gender and school location of students. Recommendations were made for the Botswana educational system and also implications for teacher training programmes in Botswana.","PeriodicalId":325097,"journal":{"name":"Asian Journal of Education and e-Learning","volume":"77 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2017-04-22","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122991449","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Vocabulary knowledge also plays an important role in almost all areas of language learning. So, the purpose of this study was to identify the relationship between the incidental vocabulary learning, task types, time devoted on tasks, and vocabulary retention of EFL learners. To achieve the aim, this research employed a quasi-experimental design to investigate the possible effects of various contextualized reading tasks and timing on the L2 incidental vocabulary acquisition of Iranian EFL learners. Sixty intermediate EFL learners in six intact classes in Zabansara language institute in Isfahan were accessed. Three classes were respectively exposed to dictionary-based, fill-in-the-blank, and sentence-making tasks with time restrictions, and the other three classes were respectively exposed to dictionary-based, fill-in-the-blank, and sentence-making tasks without time restrictions. Having experienced their relevant treatments, the participants were asked to take a delayed vocabulary test. Since task type and timing were two independent variables and vocabulary learning/recall was the dependent variable of the study, two-way ANOVA was used to compare the learners’ vocabulary scores on the delayed vocabulary test. The results revealed that time restriction exerted a significant effect on the performance of the learners in all the three groups on the delayed tests. Also, learners in the groups without time restriction significantly outperformed those in the groups with time restriction.","PeriodicalId":325097,"journal":{"name":"Asian Journal of Education and e-Learning","volume":"15 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-08-31","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127920496","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Over time, two main types of experimental laboratories have been incorporated into the strategy of teaching Physics: the hands-on and the simulation laboratory. In recent years, especially with the proliferation and development of web-based technologies, the remote-access laboratory has appeared as option, which requires less space, less time, and less financial resources, as experimental setups are automated and experiments are performed online. In this study, a method is presented, for operating a remote, first year undergraduate Physics teaching Laboratory, using web-interface techniques that enable students to fully control the whole experimentation process. This technology, which is based on a server–client approach, allows the implementation of physics experiments via Internet without requiring expensive equipment or software. In addition, a physics experiment in Optics is also described, already available as a sample application, according to which the optical attenuation of light is studied as it goes through optically transparent materials; it can also be carried out by the students via Internet in real time. Students, by the use of an interface, which is a dynamic webpage, can alter parameters and make quantitative measurements, which can then be analyzed. In conclusion, the qualitative characteristics of the educational results achieved and the experience of the operation of a remote experiment are given.","PeriodicalId":325097,"journal":{"name":"Asian Journal of Education and e-Learning","volume":"42 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2016-06-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124119724","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

There is an overall significant improvement in learning outcomes after following face-to-face tutoring, both on cognitive as well as affective aspects. Only a small part of the face-to-face tutoring does not affect the mastery of the materials, especially in the high group. Face-to-face tutoring is one of the learning forms provided by the Open University (Universitas Terbuka). The tutorial of the S1PGSD (Bachelor Degree of Elementary Education Program) is held in eight meetings in a semester in one of the coursesis “Elementary School Civic Education Materials and Learning”. The method employed in the pretest and posttest of the experimental research is aimed at measuring the effectiveness of the model in learning achievement on the subjects after the treatment. The research sample is a study group in the Serang Regional Office, i.e. four learning group study treatments, which followed face-to-face tutoring. The samples, which were determined using probability sampling, were among the S1 students in the Serang Regional Office. The research data shows that the students’achievement in the Low Group had significant imrpovement.A smallportion of face-to-face tutoringdid not impact the students’ mastery of the materials. It is supported by three categories of students: 1) those who relied only on the explanation by the tutor and did not study the learning materials, 2)those who not only learned the learning materials but also seriously followedthe tutorials, and3)those who did not follow the face-to-face tutoring nor learned the learning materials, but gained knowledge from materialsoutside of the university’s learning materials and tutorials. The students stated that the tutorials were very helpful in understanding the learning materials, especially for understanding difficult terms. This research aims to determine the effectiveness of the face-to-face tutoring on the students’mastery of the law materials. To learn the law materials is important, because it needs early awareness of the law. The results of this study in relation toface-to-face tutoring is expected to be developed by the S1 Elementary Education Program in the Faculty of Education in order to improve the students’ abilities and help them get accustomed to think, judge, and make decisions when faced with issues in learning the materials. To further strengthen of the students’ capability, the Open University students should learn through modules independently, but they also need to follow face-to-face tutoring.","PeriodicalId":325097,"journal":{"name":"Asian Journal of Education and e-Learning","volume":"79 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-10-24","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114422644","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The paper highlights benefits of open access educational resources (OAER) to include:unrestrained accessibility of educational resources; cheaper and cost effectiveness of information resources; enhances easy publication of intellectual works; global visibility and utilization of research findings; improves societal intellectual capacity building; and easy dissemination of information. Also, the paper points out some challenges militating against the success of OAER to consist of: lack of awareness among the intellectual community; inadequate funding of OAER in libraries; technical and technological problems. However, the paper concludes by proffering some remedies to ameliorate the challenges confronting OAER in library retrieval system; such as: current educational reforms aiming at given e-learning a place in the educational policy in Nigeria should be vigorously pursued; Nigerian government should depoliticize the educational system and give education experts free hand to objectively run the affair of education in the country; library authorities while planning to purchase OAER hard wares and facilities, should go for those ones that have lesser hazard effect on the health condition of its library personnel; library management should engage the services of personnel who are skilful in the ICT and its accessories in order to sustain the effectiveness of OAER in the library operations; and finally, more telecommunication companies especially those who are interested in the educational development should be licensed to commence operations in the country, while the established ones should drastically reduce their internet connectivity charges.","PeriodicalId":325097,"journal":{"name":"Asian Journal of Education and e-Learning","volume":"10 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-08-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126424873","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This study investigated the availability and utilization of e-learning facilities by science teacher educators in teaching pre-service teachers in South-East Nigerian Colleges of Education. One hundred and sixty-seven (167) science teacher educators participated in the study. A researcher-developed fifty five-item questionnaire with reliability co-efficient of 0.87 was used to collect data. Four research questions guided the conduct of the study. Data were analyzed using mean and standard deviation. Results show that some of the listed e-learning facilities were available for teaching science in Nigerian Colleges of Education to a high extent. Some of these include computer, printer, computer laboratory and public address system. On the average however, most e-learning facilities were available to a moderate extent. Results also revealed that science teacher educators use e-learning facilities to a moderate extent. High cost of computer units, lack of prior knowledge on the part of the students on usage of computers, low browsing speed resulting to wastage of payer’s money and unavailability of some e-learning facilities due to poor funding are some of the factors that contribute to poor usage of e-learning facilities. The researchers recommended (among others) that schools should be provided with e-teaching and e-learning facilities and science teacher educators should undergo regular in-service training and re-training programs.","PeriodicalId":325097,"journal":{"name":"Asian Journal of Education and e-Learning","volume":"44 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2015-05-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131560231","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
