We have addressed the needs of all kinds of programmers: novices, professionals and end-user programmers. Many studies were performed which provided new insights and led to new models of programmers. From these insights and models, we created new programming languages and environments. Evaluations of the resulting systems have shown that they are effective and successful. This paper provides an overview of the entire 10-year Natural Programming project, but focuses on our new results since WEUSE-III in Dagstuhl.","PeriodicalId":324999,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 4th international workshop on End-user software engineering","volume":"4 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-05-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131803101","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Once a workflow is deployed and started, the constructs that represent the workflow cannot be altered subsequently. In fact, only administrator could re-define a workflow at any time. We claim, however, that such an admin-based deployment is not sufficient. For future application scenarios, we see a need for adapting workflow compositions in a personalized manner even at runtime of the deployed workflow. According to this idea, regular end-users should be able to adapt a workflow for accommodating new requirements. Based on our review for the component-based tailoring methods, the paper presents the multi-tier architecture TailorBPEL that supports the tailoring of personalized BPEL-based workflow compositions. We believe that such architecture is significant for having highly flexible and adaptable service-oriented architectures that are considered for the adoption to user-centric application scenarios.","PeriodicalId":324999,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 4th international workshop on End-user software engineering","volume":"128 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-05-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114715055","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

To explore these interesting characteristics from a software engineering standpoint, we had conducted an exploratory survey of bioinformatics developers. The survey had a range of questions about people, processes and products. As software engineering researchers, we realized that the survey results had important implications for the education of bioinformatics software professionals. Through this paper we intend to open an avenue of discussion about software engineering knowledge that should be taught to end user programmers, based on our findings in the bioinformatics domain. In addition to the survey results we went through the curricula of more than fifty bioinformatics programs as well as the contents of over fifteen textbooks. We observed that there was no mention of the role and importance of software engineering practices essential for creating dependable software systems. We present a set of recommendations for improving bioinformatics education in terms of software engineering principles and ways that they apply in the context of end-user development.","PeriodicalId":324999,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 4th international workshop on End-user software engineering","volume":"23 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-05-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131366618","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Earlier experiments have shown promising results on error rates. However, these studies have been carried out on students, often, in laboratory settings. This study reports on a field experiment on group development during spreadsheeting. Experienced business managers have been working alone (monads) and in groups of two (dyads), solving a context specific problem. The results show that dyads made 36% fewer errors than monads. Hence, the results verify earlier findings and that group development can be recommended as a technique to include in end user development processes to improve quality.","PeriodicalId":324999,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 4th international workshop on End-user software engineering","volume":"255 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-05-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"117093800","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this paper we describe our approach of using existing technologies for paper-based interfaces to allow end-users to orchestrate services in a Service-Oriented Architecture (SOA). We gathered first experiences with paper-based interfaces for IT configuration by developing an end-user-developable paper-based remote interface for interactive TV applications. Further we conducted a workshop to evaluate how end-user can orchestrate services. Here, we discuss the usefulness of a paper-based interface for the orchestration of services, from an end-user perspective and how the experiences from our prototype and the workshop can inform the design of a paper-based orchestration prototype for SOA.","PeriodicalId":324999,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 4th international workshop on End-user software engineering","volume":"59 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-05-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114380210","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Although they usually do not have any software development expertise, they intervene in safety-critical software systems. This results in high demands on end-user programming environments with respect to supporting, guiding, and supervising end users. In this paper we present a software framework which is intended to serve as a basis for developing end-user programming environments. The main parts of this framework are a domain-specific language for programming automation solutions at a high level of abstraction, different visual editors for supporting end users, an approach for checking program changes against formal specifications, a variability modeling approach for representing high-level user decisions, and an approach for setting up customized end-user environments from models.","PeriodicalId":324999,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 4th international workshop on End-user software engineering","volume":"53 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-05-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126284855","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this paper, we present a spreadsheet visualization approach that is mainly based on the Markov Clustering (MCL) algorithm in an attempt to help spreadsheet users understand and debug their spreadsheets. The MCL algorithm helps in visualizing large graphs by generating clusters of cells. In our visualization approach, we also use compound fisheye views and treemaps to help in the navigation of the generated clusters. Compound fish eye views help to view members of a particular cluster while showing their linkages with other clusters. Treemaps help to visualize the depth we are at while navigating a cluster tree. Our initial experiments show that graph-based spreadsheet visualization using the MCL algorithm generates clusters which match with the corresponding logical areas of a given spreadsheet. Our experiments also show that analysis of the clusters helps us to identify some errors in the spreadsheets.","PeriodicalId":324999,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 4th international workshop on End-user software engineering","volume":"12 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-05-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128213344","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In this paper we propose and investigate the application of Test-Driven Development to the creation of spreadsheets. Test-Driven Development is an emerging development technique in software engineering that has been shown to result in better quality software code. It has also been shown that this code requires less testing and is easier to maintain. Through a set of case studies we demonstrate that Test-Driven Development can be applied to the development of spreadsheets. We present the detail of these studies preceded by a clear explanation of the technique and its application to spreadsheet engineering. A supporting tool under development by the authors is also documented along with proposed research to determine the effectiveness of the methodology and the associated tool.","PeriodicalId":324999,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 4th international workshop on End-user software engineering","volume":"56 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-05-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129857593","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

End users are increasingly involved in the design and development of the tools they use. Unfortunately, there is a high incidence of errors in applications developed by end users. In this paper, a view on end-user development is outlined, which identifies the communication gap between end users and professional software developers as one main source of errors. The spectrum of users that lie between pure end users and professional developers is examined. In particular, the focus is on a particular type of end users that are very active in shaping software tools to their needs without being aware that they are programming: in short, they are unwitting programmers. Their characteristics and their need of appropriate development techniques and environments are analyzed. Finally, the meta-design participatory approach we have developed is briefly described to show how it fills the communication gap and well supports the activities of unwitting programmers.","PeriodicalId":324999,"journal":{"name":"Proceedings of the 4th international workshop on End-user software engineering","volume":"6 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-05-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124914948","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
