Diamant were grown in the greenhouse and date of stolon initiation, stolon length, position of the stolon on the stem, date of tuber initiation, position of the tuber on the stolon, tuber shape and tuber weight were determined. After harvest, tubers were stored at 18 degrees C to assess the duration of dormancy. By means of regression analyses, sets of variables were selected that explained the variation in duration of dormancy best. Tuber weight explained by far the highest proportion of the variation in dormancy and was negatively correlated with dormancy duration. The duration of dormancy was also significantly (positively) related to the date of tuber initiation and to the position of the tuber on the plant during its growth. Driselase, gamanase and an experimental enzyme preparation were used. Car­ bohydrate hydrolysis was found in cell walls and cell contents in 1-2 cell layers at the surface of 0.2 mm plant particles. Enzyme activity was detected to some extend inside unlignified and lignified cell walls. The absence of any reaction in some sublayers of the cell wall was indicative for, either the absence of polysaccharide substrate or a very tied interaction of cell wall components preventing enzymic activity or the absence of typical enzymes in crude preparations. The system is based on weighing the amount of fluid replaced by fermentation gas, followed by calculation to gas volume and registration by a data logger. Incubations with glucose, rice starch and crystalline cellulose showed glucose to be fermentated at the fastest rate and cellulose at the slowest. The major source of variation was rumen fluid from different days. The digestible organic matter (DOM) content and the chemical composition of the forage classes grasses, reed, forbs and browse varied seasonally. The DOM content of all forage classes showed a decrease from spring to winter as usual. However, the assumed minimum energy content for cattle mainte­ nance (approximately 450 g DOM kg -1 dry matter) was reached at different moments in the different forage classes. Reed reached it in autumn, grasses in winter, forbs (living parts) re­ mained the entire year above this level and browse remained the entire year below this level. Grazing delayed the maturation of Poa trivialis, reed ( Phragmites australis) and the impor­ tant forb Urtica dioica. The protein, K, Ca, P, Cu content of the four forage classes exceeded the cattle maintenance levels for these nutrients the whole year. The Na and Mg content of grasses, reed and browse were marginal in some periods of the year. Due to their high miner­ al contents, the forbs were an important mineral source in cattle diets. For harvested products data are avail­ able from statistics and they were used as a basis for calculating the carbon flows. Average carbon pools, particularly in the soil, cannot be derived directly. For the calculation of this carbon pool a method has been applied that requires only three input data: the average amount of crop or tree residues, the decomposition rate of soil organic matter and the so­ called humification coefficient. For broad studies this simple method can particularly be use­ ful. However, this method can only be applied to situations in equilibrium, where the rates of incorporation of crop residues or tree litter and decomposition of soil organic matter are just equal and hence, the soil carbon is constant. In the soil, a state of equilibrium may not really occur, as continually changes in crop rotation and land use will take place. For a changing land use and hence a changing rate of incorporation of organic material it is shown how the new state of equilibrium and the rate of change in carbon pool size can be calculated. It is described together with some basic growth and uptake models. Results are presented of a preliminary experiment with the lettuce cultivar Sitonia (using manual control and nutrient dosage). The % DM in the heads decreased from 6.86 (week 1, 20 June 1988) to 3.89 (week 5, 25 July). The shoot:root ratio increased from 0.50 (week 1) to 6.47 (week 6). The time courses of DW increase and cumulative uptake of macronutrients were well described by exponential equations. The cumulative uptake determined from the loss of nutrients from the nutrient solution exceeded that determined from plant analysis. Cumulative uptake as a function of cumulative daily radiation was well described by a logistic equation. Some constant plant uptake ratios between micro- and macronutrients were observed: Cl uptake was related to that of N, K, P or Mg, and B uptake to that of K. DW as a function of transpiration was also well described by a logistic model, with an average DM production of 3.1 g/litre transpired; a logistic model also expressed transpiration as a function of radiation, with an average transpiration output of 5.8 litres/unit (kJ/cmsuperscript 2) increase in radiation. The experiments were conducted in laboratory incubation systems at 10 °C. In three subsoil materials, transformation of methyl isothiocyanate was fast (less than 10 % was left after 30 days), whereas in the case of the fourth material a half-life of approximately 35 days was found. With regard to the transformation of the (Z)- and (£>isomers of 1,3-dichloropropene in the same subsoil materials, half-lives between 16 and 64 days were found. Signifi­ cant genotypic differences for RGR, NAR, LAR, SLA and LWR occurred. For these charac­ ters, significant but small genotype x NT interactions were also found. RGR, LAR and SLA increased and LWR decreased with higher NT, while there was no distinct NT effect on NAR. Between NAR and LAR, and NAR and SLA a strong negative correlation was observed, and between LAR and SLA a positive correlation.
