This research work was conducted to improve the strength and workability of concrete at reduced amount of water due to the addition of super plasticizer by replacing partially the concrete materials: cement, with fly ash at 0%, 5%, 10% and 15%; fine aggregate, with quarry dust at 0% and 15%; and the addition of sulphonated Naphthalene Formaldehyde Condensate (SNFC) super plasticizer at 0% and 0.6% by weight of cement content reducing the amount of water to 0.45 w/c from the conventional 0.6 and 0.55 w/c ratio. Concrete cube specimens were prepared with these inclusions using grade M20 concrete and nominal mix proportion of 1:2:4. Sieve analysis test, specific gravity test, fineness test were carried out on the concrete materials, workability test was carried out on each concrete specimen, a compressive strength test and weight density test was done at 7days and 28days curing. The compressive strength of concrete made with fly ash, quarry dust and SNFC at 28days ranges from 19.58N/mm2 to 30.23N/mm2. These results were higher compared to those of conventional concrete. A combination of fly ash, quarry dust and SNFC was then recommended for solving problems of low-strength concrete.","PeriodicalId":323504,"journal":{"name":"FUOYE Journal of Engineering and Technology","volume":"455 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-03-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115939806","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Five sets of high carbon steel (HCS) samples were heated to an austenitizing temperature of 830°C in the furnace, soaked at that temperature for 1 hour and quenched interruptedly at a temperature of 310°C in epoxidized cotton seed oil (ECO) bath for 15 – 75 minutes (at regular intervals of 15 minutes for different samples’ sets). Subsequently, samples air-cooled at ambient temperature. Hounsfield tensometer, Indentec universal hardness tester and Izod impact tester were used to determine the mechanical properties of the austempered samples. From the outcome of the investigation, appreciable improvement was noted in tensile strength (1210 N/mm2), hardness (397 HBN) and impact strength (12.1 J/mm) of the austempered samples. Further, samples were subjected to metallographic sample preparation, succeeded by microstructural examination using scanning electron microscope (SEM). The structures observed to be majorly bainite. The austempering time of 15 minutes produced the outstanding combination of mechanical properties.","PeriodicalId":323504,"journal":{"name":"FUOYE Journal of Engineering and Technology","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-03-15","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124528332","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, outages occasioned by faults are a major setback in ensuring a regular supply of electricity to consumers in a populous state like Lagos. This study analyses the outage causes, their cost, energy loss, and duration of outages experienced by electricity consumers in the distribution systems of Lagos State. The fault reports of Eko Electricity Distribution Company (EKEDC) and Ikeja Electricity Distribution Company (IKEDC) were used for the analysis. The analysis revealed that the main causes of outages on the network are transient faults (356.78 occurrences per month) and jumper cuts (352.83 occurrences per month). The average monthly cost impacts of the outages on the network are estimated to be between ₦631m & ₦837m and ₦837m & ₦1.66b for the 11kV and 33kV networks of the State respectively. The average monthly energy lost due to outages on the network for the period under review is significant (100,415.34 MWh in total) while the average monthly duration of the outages is notably high (28,463.34 hours in total). To minimise outages and their impacts, faults should be cleared on time while the lines are patrolled and maintained regularly. The jumpers should be replaced with metal line taps or bi-metal line taps while intermediate poles are introduced in over-spanned lines to minimise transient fault on the network of the State.","PeriodicalId":323504,"journal":{"name":"FUOYE Journal of Engineering and Technology","volume":"150 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-03-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134332412","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This study aimed at developing a low cost poultry de-feathering machine (DM) that will promote food hygiene; and the safety of operators. The machine consist of a hard plastic drum on which rubber pluckers were fixed and was powered with a 1.5kW electric motor. The DM was developed according to engineering design and principles. The test was achieved by considering the weight of the poultry birds (PB) before and after the de-feathering process. The de-feathered PB weight; and the time taken to de-feather PB were recorded. The feather was discharged through the DM outlet by gravity and weighed to determine the actual weight of the removed feather. The test was repeated five times and the outcome of the recorded results was presented in graphs and tables. Brown old layers (hens) were used for the machine performance evaluation at 7 different scalding temperatures (50, 55, 60, 65, 70, 75, and 80) °C. The DM was designed to de-feather 5 hens per batch. From the result obtained, 5 hens with a total average weight of 9.5 kg de-feather in 28 seconds at 92% efficiency average. The force required to de-feather hens decreased with an increase in the scalding temperature. At a scalding temperature >800 C, the bird skin will pill and give it a rough appearance.","PeriodicalId":323504,"journal":{"name":"FUOYE Journal of Engineering and Technology","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-03-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125137076","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

They give predictions that help engineers to foretell or foresee a system’s behaviour in real life. Validation ensures that these models give proper or accurate representation of the real system. In this study, a model equation derived for predicting the end deflection of a tapered width, constant height cantilever beam was adopted for validation. This equation was derived using the Finite Element Method's Rayleigh-Ritz principle and the virtual work concept.  Using a finite element model developed in ANSYS as the representation of the real system and a basis for validation, this study aimed to validate the equation. Validation was achieved by the comparison of the load-deflection curve, the height-deflection curve and the end deflection of the model equation to that of the finite element model in ANSYS. Though the model equation was verified to really foretell deflection, the predictions of the equation was not in good agreement with that of the finite element model. The accuracy of the equation dwindled as the parameters of the tapered cantilever beam were varied. It gave an average percentage error of 30% higher than the allowable error of 5%. Though the equation was derived using the appropriate fundamental numerical principles as it basis, it’s accuracy can be exponentially increased by modifying it to include a larger number of discretized elements and a higher degree of shape/interpolation function.","PeriodicalId":323504,"journal":{"name":"FUOYE Journal of Engineering and Technology","volume":"26 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-03-03","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128108429","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The anticipated reservoir inflow, outflow and storage capacity based on the future climatic variable scenarios was investigated. Possible trend scenarios for mean temperature, precipitation, evapo-transpiration and reservoir water level for a 21-years period (2000 to 2020) were determined using Mann Kendall and Sen’s slope. Time series of monthly runoff was simulated for this period consequent upon which the reservoir water level was modeled as a function of temperature, precipitation and evapo-transpiration using Artificial Neural Networks. The modeling output indicates that precipitation, evapo-transpiration and reservoir water level exhibited positive trends at Lower Usma River while temperature exhibited a negative trend. This is with absolute assumption that land-use and land-cover effect on the area under study remained unchanged. Also, water resource feeding application through engineered channelization of precipitation and associated flooding and surface runoff harvesting activities, diverting water to the reservoirs, were observed as a contributing factors to the positive trend of the reservoir water level. The reservoir water level estimated with the Artificial Neural Networks forecast differed by 0.73m3 from the historical value. In the overall analysis, there is an indication of sustainability tendency of the reservoir to furnish public water supply and irrigation. However, the significance of these parameters as rightly capturing the influence of climate and effect, on the reservoir in the region is under continuous research.","PeriodicalId":323504,"journal":{"name":"FUOYE Journal of Engineering and Technology","volume":"31 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-02-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116194176","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Since CO2 offers a much higher volumetric capacity, the problem of the higher working pressure can be overcome by mixing it with a lower pressure refrigerant.  LPG on the other hand has a cooling capacity of about 10% higher than R12 and the vapour pressure is appropriate. It has excellent thermodynamic properties leading to high energy efficiency and operates at lower pressures than other main refrigerants while maintaining a similar volumetric refrigerating effect, but it is highly flammable. Therefore, by combining CO2 and LPG in the right amounts, we can create a blend that will have low pressure while also being less combustible, more effective at cooling than the old one, more energy-efficient, with an improved coefficient of performance (COP), and safer for the environment. The different studies examined demonstrate that combining CO2 and LPG created products with greater refrigerating effect capacity, enhanced coefficients of performance (COP), were more energy-efficient, and were also secure and safe for the environment; that can be used to replace the existing refrigerants.","PeriodicalId":323504,"journal":{"name":"FUOYE Journal of Engineering and Technology","volume":"24 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-02-23","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114086122","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A diamond hole configuration was studied with different aspect ratios that give a minimum peak temperature at every point in the structure. The solid body volume is fixed and the channel aspect ratio is allowed to change in this direction. The solid body experiences heat flux ( ) on one side and the coolant is allowed to enter into the channels from the opposite side at a given Reynolds number ( ) such that 100 ≤  ≤ 500, and channel aspect ratio ( ) from 1 to 4. The results show that as the and  increase, the maximum temperature and thermal resistance ( ) decrease while the Nusselt number increases. Also, the  and increase, friction factor decreases and increases, respectively. Comparatively, for a given range of 100 ≤  ≤ 500, and channel aspect ratio ( ) from 1 to 4, about 4%-12% and 37%-44% reduction in the maximum wall temperature and thermal resistance respectively, were reported, while about 55.6%-75% and 50%-68% improvement in Nusselt number and pumping power respectively, were observed. The results establish that heat transfer is improved in the diamond hole channel at various Re and AR. Also, the results reveal that the Colburn j-factor decreases when  rises and the aspect ratio decreases due to the heat transfer characteristic increases. Again, pumping power increase rapidly as  and  increase, which causes a higher pressure drop across the channel and leads to higher energy consumption.","PeriodicalId":323504,"journal":{"name":"FUOYE Journal of Engineering and Technology","volume":"300 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-02-10","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122823537","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The actual value of these parameters can only be determined either from field or soil bin experiment via appropriate instrumentation systems. Several published works have been reported on development of soil bin instrumentation system. However, development of a system that can measure and log all the required parameters simultaneously in real time remains an active area of research. The distance moved and the forces acting on the tool were sensed using potentiometer and load cells, respectively. The sensed parameters and the calculated tool linear velocity were processed in parallel using microcontroller with optimised code to ensure real-time and simultaneous logging.
