The aim of this study was to explore how patients and physiotherapist interact in a situation of motor learning. Six patients with the diagnosis of subacromial impingement were video-filmed during 11 treatment sessions with the same physiotherapist. The aim of the treatment was to improve their initial pattern of movement in arm elevation. The films were analysed with content analysis and the results are presented in three content areas: the context, interaction and professional skills. Further development of methodology, including computer aids for transcriptions, will make digital video analysis an interesting research method for physiotherapists. This article describes in detail the process used to develop a shared vision in the context of a PD programme for clinical leaders in two Health and Social Services and Public Safety Trusts in Northern Ireland. Having a shared vision is seen as an essential foundation stone in the development of practice and in transformational cultures. The process used took the form of four distinct stages: preparation of participants for the visioning workshop; the first visioning workshop; visioning led by/facilitated by the programme participants; and the second visioning workshop. This work provided the foundation for development work in the subsequent cycles of the PD programme.","PeriodicalId":322010,"journal":{"name":"Practice Development in Health Care","volume":"52 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2008-06-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130703922","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Individual and focus group interviews were used to gather data, and thematic and integrative analyses of these were undertaken. The overall findings of the evaluation revealed that the participants consistently felt that PD was a valuable undertaking, was useful for engaging in processes of change and offered positive outcomes both for staff and for patients. The research results generate confidence in the methods of pluralistic evaluation to evaluate the impacts of PD. We conducted a qualitative study of the experiences of care for children, parents and nurses on an inpatient ward at a tertiary paediatric referral hospital in Sydney, Australia. We considered the conduct of the research to be only one step in a process of change commenced before the initiation of the research project and continuing well after its conclusion. The subsequent step was to share what we had learned with ward staff to enable them to act to improve the experience of care for everybody. This article reports the place of the project in the overall program of change on the ward, the strategies undertaken to share the finding of the research and the ongoing steps being undertaken to translate the research findings into improvements in care. Although the process is incomplete, it continues to gather momentum as the staff celebrate their achievements to date and look for new ways to proceed into the future. One promising approach is the use of opioid agreements or contracts with patients being treated with opioids for chronic pain. Despite the increasingly common use of such agreements, little has been written about their development and use in primary care settings. This article describes the initial implementation of a pain management agreement system in a primary care setting that reflects a systems-based approach to practice development. Lessons learned and plans for future studies of outcomes are described.
