The only serious attempt at distinguishing between them was made by M. Popova. Based on an analysis of a variety of (mostly dictionary) definitions of the two terms, the article identifies three primary distinctive features that differentiate them. This makes it possible for the two concepts to be distinguished from one another, and for the general-lexis item approach to be redefined as a term. Thus, method and approach are differentiated as two distinct, non-synonymous terms. I illustrate these categories with examples from the natural sciences and partly from the humanities. The ontological categories underlying each theoretical category are also specified. Using different examples, I explore and motivate the grounds for the positing of these categories as a separate group distinct both from the ontological categories on the basis of which they are identified and the second type of constructed categories – the so-called operators. I also put forward a proposal for the inclusion of a new, additional element in the natural classification of theoretical categories. The International Maritime Organization developed the Standard Marine Communication Phrases (SMCP) in 2001. The SMCP are aimed at imposing certain requirements and serve as a VTS communication protocol. There is, however, disagreement between the protocol and its application in real-life radiocommunications at sea. The study deals with this discrepancy and describes situations where it leads to miscommunication. The conclusions presented in the paper can contribute towards the improvement of the SMCP application, thus facilitating radio-communications at sea. The Forum was organised by the Institute for Bulgarian Language Prof. Lyubomir Andreychin at the Bulgarian Academy of Sciences and the Department of Bulgarian Language of the Faculty of Slavic Studies at Sofia University St. Kliment Ohridski. The forum was dedicated to the 90th anniversary of one of the most renowned Bulgarian linguists of our time – Prof. DSc Yordan Penchev Penchev. The Forum’s topic encompassed a broad range of theoretical and applied issues related to the lexical peculiarities, the semantic description and the classification of (selected classes of) predicates and predicatives, the description of grammatical categories involved in the realisation of predication, the study of the syntactic patterns of argument expression and the identification of relevant semantic and grammatical features. The main focus of the discussion was centred around (though not limited to) the following issues: • Lexical and semantic characterisation of various classes of predicates and predicatives • Approaches to the description of valency and argument selection • The expression of predication at the morphological level • Semantic and syntactic structure of sentences with predicates and predicatives • Description of semantic and grammatical constraints on subject, complement and adjunct realisation. Following the established tradition, the papers presented at the Forum are published in Balgarski ezik’s Supplement.","PeriodicalId":321593,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Bulgarian Language","volume":"36 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-06-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129106299","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
