Constructed wetland is a low-tech treatment system, whichusually contains multiple treatment possibilities. Frequently, some kind of soil treatmentsystem is included as one treatment stage. Engineered wetland systems for purification ofwastewater and leachate are not yet widely spread in Estonia. The possibility to use peat asfilter media for treatment of leachate from Aardlapalu landfill (Tartu County, Estonia) hasbeen studied. The leachate was transported into the laboratory, aerated and percolated throughtwo different types of peat filters. The concentration of nitrogen compounds, COD and BODwas measured in the leachate before and after treatment. Hydrological consequences andchemical changes in the peat were investigated.","PeriodicalId":321575,"journal":{"name":"Linnaeus Eco-Tech","volume":"9 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-06-25","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"122404945","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In 2000 Lithuania had 597 WWTPs with capacity up to 1000 m3/d, 95% of them arethe biological treatment plants. Today the most of these WWTPs are unloaded due to thetendency to centralise wastewater treatment in rural areas of Lithuania that were in the eightand ninth decades.In small settlements and rural areas of Lithuania the aeration facilities are predominant. In theeight and ninth decades practically only the activated sludge systems were built. The situationbegan to change in the last decade of the last century: the biological filters and soil filtrationfacilities with discharge into surface waters were applied more frequently, so the building ofaeration facilities started to decrease.","PeriodicalId":321575,"journal":{"name":"Linnaeus Eco-Tech","volume":"275 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-06-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115600784","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

{"title":"Filter materials - a possible method to optimise the reduction and recycling of phosphorus in smallscale wastewater treatment systems?","authors":"L. Westholm","doi":"10.15626/eco-tech.2001.030","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.15626/eco-tech.2001.030","url":null,"abstract":"One of the environmental goals adopted by the Swedish Parliament concerns the reductionand extended recycling of nutrients, especially phosphorus (P). Phosphorus is discharged intothe environment through poorly treated wastewater, especially in sparsely populated areaswhere few people are connected to the municipal sewer-system. In these areas, small-scalewastewater treatment systems such as constructed wetlands and infiltration systems have beenused as treatment facilities. These systems have shortcomings and the recycling of phosphorus is very limited. New methods have therefore been searched for. One interestingmethod is the use of filter materials that efficiently sorb high amounts of phosphorus and,when P-saturation is achieved, could be used as soil conditioner or P-fertilisers. The criteriasuch materials have to fulfil are that they have a high P-sorption capacity, are available andthat sorbed phosphorus is available for uptake by plants. Different filter materials, naturalmaterials as well as anthropogenic ones have been tested in different kinds of investigations.Most materials have been tested in batch experiments, others have been selected for furtherstudies in column experiments and a few materials have also been tested in field experiments.A few materials have also been investigated with regard to plant availability of sorbedphosphorus. The results from the different investigations are promising, even though theknowledge still is scarce. In order to learn more about these materials, further studies aresuggested.","PeriodicalId":321575,"journal":{"name":"Linnaeus Eco-Tech","volume":"2 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2019-06-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126705589","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
