Dr. Ramirez’s successful record of leading culturally responsive and sustaining education initiatives in several districts throughout her career made her the top choice for Metro City Public Schools (MCPSs). As an anti-racist, culturally responsive leader, she initiated several successful programs. However, she also recommended a major policy shift for the district. As a result, she faced the threat of a public smear campaign that would injure her professional reputation and career. This case study challenges current and aspiring leaders to consider how essential the development of their own critical consciousness is for leaders who identify as anti-racist and culturally responsive school leaders.","PeriodicalId":321394,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Cases in Educational Leadership","volume":"43 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-09-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134960172","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In the context of Early College High Schools, principals and school districts should be partners in ensuring admissions processes are non-discriminatory. In this fictional case, a new principal in a high-performing early college high school becomes concerned that the school has been denying or not actively recruiting students with disabilities and emergent bilingual students. However, when she raises her concern with her supervisors and predecessor, she gets no support. The teaching notes of this case review the literature on ethical leadership, school administration dilemmas, and bounded ethicality.","PeriodicalId":321394,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Cases in Educational Leadership","volume":"198 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-09-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"135306785","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This case leverages the perspective of the center’s Assistant Director to demonstrate how Latinx staff navigated racialized organizational policies and procedures while working to support and retain Latinx students. Leaders studying this case will examine how racialized administrative burdens resulting from institutionalization can influence minoritized staff and student agency and engagement. Leadership shifts are felt throughout organizations in diverse ways and may even have a personal impact on individuals in a school community. Leadership transition, by its very nature, is a change. Change, especially at the top, presents organizations with myriad possibilities and similar stressors. Principal turnover has a direct impact on school achievement. The principal is key to sustainable school improvement, a process that may take 5 to 7 years after a new principal has been named. High-performing principals often leave campuses and move to central office positions because of their success with campus achievement. In the late 1990s and early 2000s in Texas, more than 30% of principals left their campuses within the first 2 years. Principals leave schools for varying reasons, such as promotions to other campuses, district-level roles, new opportunities in other districts, retirement, and positions out of the educational field. The reader should consider all perspectives in the narrative. This case study involves issues related to transition, change, instructional policies, decision-making, staff culture, and the impacts of COVID-19 on student achievement.","PeriodicalId":321394,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Cases in Educational Leadership","volume":"13 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-08-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"136119949","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We outline how anti-racist work flourished during this critical time in one school district and led to the development of anti-racist BLTs (ARBLTs). Educators had to manage tensions associated with anti-racist work that both empowered them and made them feel vulnerable in their personal and professional identities. We conclude by providing insights into how systemic anti-racist leadership practices and structures can be developed at the local level and leveraged to enact change via well-established practices such as BLTs and ILTs.","PeriodicalId":321394,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Cases in Educational Leadership","volume":"20 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-05-26","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116645695","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In such districts, school superintendents then faced the challenge of implementing these “police-free schools’ resolutions,” while sometimes encountering strong resistance, from White parents and community members in particular. This case explores the challenges of implementing a police-free schools’ resolution through the perspective of a White superintendent committed to anti-racism and social justice in a fictitious district called Union Public Schools. Informed by real events, the authors invite education leaders to articulate their stance and strategy as it relates to anti-racist leadership, law enforcement in schools, and White resistance to equity-oriented policy change.","PeriodicalId":321394,"journal":{"name":"Journal of Cases in Educational Leadership","volume":"13 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-05-16","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124696400","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
