In order to evaluate the relationship between the protein carbonyl / total protein ratio (carbonylation ratio) and skin photo-stress, the authors established a methodology by which protein carbonyl can be quantitatively analyzed using an optical technique based on surface plasmon resonance (SPR). Firstly, the protein carbonyl was reacted with 2,4-Dinitrophenylhydrazine (DNP), and the quantity of DNP-protein carbonyl was determined using an anti-DNP antibody. The mass of DNP-protein carbonyl was measured using SPR. A significant difference was observed in the carbonylation ratio between a sun-protected area (mid-ventral arm) and a sun-exposed area (upper cheek, p < 0.05). Moreover, the carbonylation ratio of the sun-exposed area showed a higher value than that of the sun-protected area. It was suggested that the carbonylation ratio might be a useful index of skin photo-stress.","PeriodicalId":319141,"journal":{"name":"2010 5th Cairo International Biomedical Engineering Conference","volume":"12 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127288690","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Manual segmentation of the myocardium in all time frames per each cross-section is a cumbersome task. Therefore, automatic myocardium segmentation methods are essential for cardiac functional analysis. Region growing has been proposed to segment the myocardium. Although the technique is simple and fast, non uniform intensity and low-contrast interfaces of the myocardium are major challenges of the technique that limit its use in myocardial segmentation. In this work, we propose a modified region growing technique that ensures reliable and fast myocardial segmentation of short-axis images. The proposed technique initializes the region growing process using different seed points chosen automatically according to the information of the mid-contour profile. Then two types of spatial constraints are used to guarantee fast and accurate segmentation. The technique has been tested and validated quantitatively using a large number of images of different qualities. The results confirm the reliability and accuracy of the proposed technique.","PeriodicalId":319141,"journal":{"name":"2010 5th Cairo International Biomedical Engineering Conference","volume":"30 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125001868","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The autonomic activity is recorded through its effects on cutaneous temperature. The sensing element is a thermal camera that is employed as a computer peripheral. Through bioheat modeling of facial imagery, almost the full range of vital signs can be extracted, including localized blood flow, cardiac pulse, breath rate, and sudomotor response. These physiological informations can then be used to draw inferences about a variety of health symptoms and psychological states. This research aims to realize the notion of sustained health monitoring for ubiquitous ailments and emotional states.","PeriodicalId":319141,"journal":{"name":"2010 5th Cairo International Biomedical Engineering Conference","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116409993","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

More than 10% of students were diagnosed with MS, academic outcomes of such students during a semester showed that the grades of young people with MS were significantly lower than those of healthy young people. Multifractal analysis was applied to analyze heartbeat time series obtained from 24-hour Holter records of these subjects. In general, the behavior of healthy young heartbeat time series with MS is not significantly different. Multifractal spectra of healthy subjects are wide and right skewed. However, when we analyzed the symmetry of the spectra of young people with MS, we have found some anomalous behavior in some series of young people with MS, where spectra are right skewed. On the other hand, multifractal spectra of heartbeat time series of young MS people when they are asleep have a different behavior with the heartbeat time series when they are awake.","PeriodicalId":319141,"journal":{"name":"2010 5th Cairo International Biomedical Engineering Conference","volume":"14 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"117089404","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The main criteria for this phantom were that it needed to be manufactured with sub-millimetric error between the calibration holes, easy to use and dimensionally suitable for MR scanners and an O-arm used at Oulu University Hospital. The designed phantom was used to assess the accuracy of the optical tracking and electromagnetic tracking system (EMTS) modalities of a commercial surgical navigator and the image quality of an O-arm. The studies showed that the design of the phantom fulfilled the requirements set for this study. The phantom functioned well and it was easy to use. It also had enough calibration holes to ascertain the trend of the accuracy and image errors. The present accuracy assessment protocol proved to be a practicable quality control tool for accuracy analysis in the hospital.","PeriodicalId":319141,"journal":{"name":"2010 5th Cairo International Biomedical Engineering Conference","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128003580","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In medical imaging, segmentation is important for feature extraction, image measurements, and image display. This study presents a new version of complex-valued artificial neural networks (CVANN) for the biomedical image segmentation. Proposed new method is called as combined complex-valued artificial neural network (CCVANN) which is a combination of two complex-valued artificial neural networks. To check the validation of proposed method, lung segmentation is realized. For this purpose, we used 32 chest CT images of 6 female and 26 male patients. These images were recorded from Baskent University Radiology Department in Turkey. The accuracy of the CCVANN model is more satisfactory as compared to the single CVANN model.","PeriodicalId":319141,"journal":{"name":"2010 5th Cairo International Biomedical Engineering Conference","volume":"33 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132026227","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We discuss an approach to integrate clinical trial simulations with an optimization method to produce predictions of the best individualized treatment. Our objective is to optimize the treatment protocol by minimizing health risk to adverse drug reactions. This approach anticipates the era of genome-based medicine that requires sophisticated engineering, mathematical modeling and simulations to support best practice and clinical use of genetic data.","PeriodicalId":319141,"journal":{"name":"2010 5th Cairo International Biomedical Engineering Conference","volume":"49 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2010-12-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"115380367","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
