This approach is referred to as code-spread CDMA (CS-CDMA). In this paper these two systems are compared in a synchronous downlink scenario. Both systems are assumed to operate over channels with nonzero delay spread, making it difficult to maintain orthogonality between users at the receiver. Using synchronous transmission, the DS-CDMA system is found to outperform the CS-CDMA system at high loads on all simulated channels. However, it is found that if the CS-CDMA system is allowed to transmit different users asynchronously through independent fading channels, like in an uplink scenario, it outperforms the synchronous downlink DS-CDMA system already on channels with modest delay spread.","PeriodicalId":318880,"journal":{"name":"VTC2000-Spring. 2000 IEEE 51st Vehicular Technology Conference Proceedings (Cat. The system stability, throughput, message delay and message blocking probability are studied. It is assumed that each message comprises a random number of packets that have a general distribution, and each user have a finite buffer capacity. To maintain the fairness to all users, it is assumed that each message in the buffer is transmitted independently, that is, a user has to release the reserved slot after finishing the transmission of the message even if it has other messages waiting in the buffer. It is straightforward to extend the analysis to R-ALOHA systems with infinite buffer capacity. The accuracy of the analysis is verified by simulation.","PeriodicalId":318880,"journal":{"name":"VTC2000-Spring. 2000 IEEE 51st Vehicular Technology Conference Proceedings (Cat. The unfair-sharing CAS allocates the maximum number of sub-codes only for one data user while assigning a single sub-code for the rest of the data users. To achieve a fair transmission for all data users, the number of sub-codes for each data user is scheduled by the round-robin method. It is shown that the proposed CAS is more efficient for non real-time data service than the conventional CAS, called a fair-sharing scheme, in terms of throughput, average power saving factor, and system utilization factor. Specifically, when a system is loaded by 20% of the maximum number of voice users and 30% of the maximum number of data users, the proposed CAS enhances the throughput approximately more than 200%.","PeriodicalId":318880,"journal":{"name":"VTC2000-Spring. 2000 IEEE 51st Vehicular Technology Conference Proceedings (Cat. The expressions include both short term and long term signal distributions in addition to the utilisation of the empirically determined area mean. The presented methodology could be used for optimal radio network planning, when different classes of the service quality are offered by the operator. The best server probability levels including statistical cell boundaries are calculated for microcells in rectilinear streets. The handover request probability is calculated for a particular network scenario. The cell radius as a statistical quantity is then modelled and the uncertainties in cell area estimation are calculated. The dependence of the coverage area reliability on the radio channel parameters is also quantified.","PeriodicalId":318880,"journal":{"name":"VTC2000-Spring. 2000 IEEE 51st Vehicular Technology Conference Proceedings (Cat. Channel coding and interleaving techniques are very important in achieving high-quality data transmission and multiplexing techniques are also important in realizing multimedia services. On the other hand, wideband CDMA (W-CDMA) is a promising radio access standard for the 3/sup rd/-generation mobile radio system. This paper proposes a new multiplexing channel interleaver structure that satisfies the above requirements for W-CDMA mobile radio systems and evaluates the performance of the proposed scheme by computer simulation. The simulation results show that the proposed scheme can provide sufficient interleaving gain while achieving a very efficient coding/multiplexing scheme while keeping the increase in hardware complexity to a minimum.","PeriodicalId":318880,"journal":{"name":"VTC2000-Spring. 2000 IEEE 51st Vehicular Technology Conference Proceedings (Cat. The numerical examples were obtained from simulations of the EDGE (Enhanced Data-rates for GSM Evolution) system, a third generation TDMA based wireless packet system, initially targeted for applications such as Web browsing deployed over a wide-area cellular infrastructure. While compact frequency reuse results in better spectrum efficiency, the provisioning of common control functionality becomes challenging. We describe and evaluate a method based on time-synchronized base stations time-sharing control channels to achieve effectively 4/12 or 3/9 reuse. This system is capable of providing a stand-alone EDGE deployment using only three 200 kHz carriers. We present simulation results to understand the impacts on both control and traffic channels.","PeriodicalId":318880,"journal":{"name":"VTC2000-Spring. 2000 IEEE 51st Vehicular Technology Conference Proceedings (Cat.
