Our analysis allows for investigating the characteristics of optimal power allocation subject to varying QoS requirements and furthermore, quantifying the corresponding advantage in terms of the system capacity under the pilot/data-combined channel estimation scheme. We demonstrate that, when the different classes of users with varying channel configurations and quality-of-service (QoS) requirements are co-existing, the system capacity can be significantly improved with the pilot/data-combined scheme as compared with that of system using the conventional pilot-based scheme.","PeriodicalId":318880,"journal":{"name":"VTC2000-Spring. 2000 IEEE 51st Vehicular Technology Conference Proceedings (Cat. A simple semi-empirical model for evaluation of various handoff strategies is developed. Based on the model, we show that a part of the capacity improvement predicted for 3G systems that is expected to come from a new soft handoff algorithm might not be achievable. This corroborates the conclusion published in Chedda (1999). However, we found that the new algorithm can still significantly improve the utilization of the network resources, and reduce operator costs. Experimental results for several comparative IS-95A vs. IS-95B field tests are presented, which compare favorably with our simulations. As opposed to Chedda, no significant increase in the messaging was observed, nor any problems with either the forward or the reverse link.","PeriodicalId":318880,"journal":{"name":"VTC2000-Spring. 2000 IEEE 51st Vehicular Technology Conference Proceedings (Cat. On the forward link of the proposed system data is transmitted to different access terminals (AT) in a TDM fashion. The rate transmitted to each AT is variable and depends on each AT's measured SINR. ATs send to the access points (AP) the index of the highest data rate which can be received reliably. A scheduler at the AP determines the next terminal to be served based on the reported data rate requests from the terminals and the amount of data that has already been transmitted to each terminal. A cell layout of 19 3-sector and 6-sector hexagonal cells is considered. The throughput of the forward link of the embedded sector is simulated for stationary terminals.","PeriodicalId":318880,"journal":{"name":"VTC2000-Spring. 2000 IEEE 51st Vehicular Technology Conference Proceedings (Cat. Although it was developed for the GSM, the basic concept of variable channel coding can be adopted to other digital radio systems like UMTS. The AMR concept allows almost wire-line speech quality even for poor channel conditions by dynamically splitting the gross bit rate between source (speech) and channel coding according to the channel quality.","PeriodicalId":318880,"journal":{"name":"VTC2000-Spring. 2000 IEEE 51st Vehicular Technology Conference Proceedings (Cat. The aim of the linear pre-filter is to shape the original channel impulse response to some shorter desired impulse response (DIR) in order to reduce the complexity of the VA. In this paper, we present a new MSE based approach for optimizing CLVEs. This approach takes advantage of the modifications to the VA which are suitable for channels having coarsely located coefficients. Specifically, the new approach has the flexibility in choosing the positions and optimizing the values of nonzero coefficients of DIR. As a result, it includes the conventional MSE-based approaches as a special case. Simulation results have been presented to illustrate the performance of proposed method.","PeriodicalId":318880,"journal":{"name":"VTC2000-Spring. 2000 IEEE 51st Vehicular Technology Conference Proceedings (Cat. Much of the work on video transmission has focused on either dealing with packet losses due to congestion found in IP wireline networks or bit errors and packet losses due to the fading channel environment of a wireless network. Many of the applications for multimedia services will involve video transmission over a wired-to-wireless link and an important research topic is error-resilient video which can adapt to the different conditions found in a wired and wireless environment. The current solutions in transmission of multimedia across different networks include some type of transcoder where the source is partially or fully decoded and re-encoded to suit the network conditions. Here we introduce a flexible progressive source/channel coding framework for video which can adapt to the different conditions imposed by wired and wireless channels at the bitstream level, avoiding the often computationally complex step of transcoding between networks that could deteriorate decoded video quality. The framework also allows for graceful degradation of video quality when the network conditions are poor due to congestion or deep fades.","PeriodicalId":318880,"journal":{"name":"VTC2000-Spring. 2000 IEEE 51st Vehicular Technology Conference Proceedings (Cat. After comparing TxAD with coherent receiver antenna diversity (CRAD) which is used in the uplink of all major digital mobile radio systems, the advantages and drawbacks of TxAD are discussed.
