Our analysis allows for investigating the characteristics of optimal power allocation subject to varying QoS requirements and furthermore, quantifying the corresponding advantage in terms of the system capacity under the pilot/data-combined channel estimation scheme. We demonstrate that, when the different classes of users with varying channel configurations and quality-of-service (QoS) requirements are co-existing, the system capacity can be significantly improved with the pilot/data-combined scheme as compared with that of system using the conventional pilot-based scheme.","PeriodicalId":318880,"journal":{"name":"VTC2000-Spring. 2000 IEEE 51st Vehicular Technology Conference Proceedings (Cat. A simple semi-empirical model for evaluation of various handoff strategies is developed. Based on the model, we show that a part of the capacity improvement predicted for 3G systems that is expected to come from a new soft handoff algorithm might not be achievable. This corroborates the conclusion published in Chedda (1999). However, we found that the new algorithm can still significantly improve the utilization of the network resources, and reduce operator costs. Experimental results for several comparative IS-95A vs. IS-95B field tests are presented, which compare favorably with our simulations. As opposed to Chedda, no significant increase in the messaging was observed, nor any problems with either the forward or the reverse link.","PeriodicalId":318880,"journal":{"name":"VTC2000-Spring. 2000 IEEE 51st Vehicular Technology Conference Proceedings (Cat. On the forward link of the proposed system data is transmitted to different access terminals (AT) in a TDM fashion. The rate transmitted to each AT is variable and depends on each AT's measured SINR. ATs send to the access points (AP) the index of the highest data rate which can be received reliably. A scheduler at the AP determines the next terminal to be served based on the reported data rate requests from the terminals and the amount of data that has already been transmitted to each terminal. A cell layout of 19 3-sector and 6-sector hexagonal cells is considered. The throughput of the forward link of the embedded sector is simulated for stationary terminals.","PeriodicalId":318880,"journal":{"name":"VTC2000-Spring. 2000 IEEE 51st Vehicular Technology Conference Proceedings (Cat. The analysis is based on the assumption that the electromagnetic (EM) field distributions at the antennas could be modelled as uniform in azimuth with vertical Gaussian distributions with zero mean. The results indicate that the scattered field measurement environment, including the method to average over both transmit and receive positions/angles, will give the same measured results as an environment with uniform field distributions in azimuth and Gaussian elevation distribution at both transmit and receive antennas and for both polarizations. The result of the analysis is that the estimated standard deviation of the vertical field distributions (VP and HP) is less than 25 degrees. Also the cross polarization power ratios at the receiver antenna for vertical, horizontal or 60/spl deg/ tilted dipole transmit antennas are estimated to >8 dB, <-8.5 dB and -2 to -3 dB respectively. These results have been partly validated by 3D measurements performed by CPK, Aalborg University. The analysis also includes a phantom that has a mean path gain of about -6.4 dB for a vertical transmit dipole and about -5.8 dB for a horizontal transmit dipole. The cross polarization properties of the phantom seem to be different with the vertical transmit dipole and the horizontal transmit dipole.","PeriodicalId":318880,"journal":{"name":"VTC2000-Spring. 2000 IEEE 51st Vehicular Technology Conference Proceedings (Cat. In it, the request access (RA) message of a mobile terminal (MT) is randomly piggybacked to the base station (BS) through a COCH minislot in the uplink (UL) provided by its assistor MT which is assigned by the BS. The simulation results show that the performance of a two minislot ALOHA reservation protocol is improved by combining itself with a protocol which has one ALOHA RA minislot plus one COCH RA minislot. Under heavy RA traffic load, replacing one ALOHA RA minislot with one COCH RA minislot in a multiple access protocol which has multiple (>3) RA minislots will stabilise the delay-throughput performance of the MRMA protocol even at the normalised throughput of 99%; the average packet delay is nearly at the same level under light throughput. The overhead of one COCH minislot is 1 bit information plus guard time.","PeriodicalId":318880,"journal":{"name":"VTC2000-Spring. 2000 IEEE 51st Vehicular Technology Conference Proceedings (Cat.
