WebCAT, an online system, facilitates the sharing of statewide crime incident data throughout Virginia law enforcement agencies. It further provides tools for data and spatial analysis. For the past three years, teams worked to develop prototypes of the system. This year focused on the deployment of WebCAT for use by the state of Virginia, through creating enhanced querying functions, more robust analysis tools, and improved interface usability. Further, the team increased security and administrative functions to aid in system oversight and safety. The team used the systems lifecycle through the analysis, design, implementation, testing, and evaluation of WebCAT. The results increased the capacity of data provided to analysts, provides data and spatial analysis tools, and improved system usability.","PeriodicalId":317634,"journal":{"name":"2005 IEEE Design Symposium, Systems and Information Engineering","volume":"85 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-04-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116417718","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Included in the scope of this project, was determining an equipment process layout and designing an inventory management tool. The overall objective was to determine the most efficient layout of process lines for receiving, sorting, inspection, and storing of customer owned equipment and develop a useable inventory tool. Deliverables requested were flow charts on processes and the inventory tool, with the only constraint being limited facility space. A visual of the current warehouse and a database capable of obtaining information from 5 of the 16 distribution centers were supplied by the sponsor. Extending the scope of the project, the team delivered a safety inspection checklist as well as packaging instructions.","PeriodicalId":317634,"journal":{"name":"2005 IEEE Design Symposium, Systems and Information Engineering","volume":"519 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-04-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124480035","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The purpose for this project is to create a more efficient inspection process allowing more containers to be inspected without too significant of a cost. The inspection process that was simulated has four major parts. The different stages in the process include: targeting containers, passive inspection, active inspection, and a manual inspection. The different stages included times, costs, and probabilities. These were used as input data for the model. Different scenarios of the simulation model were then created to find a more efficient system in which a greater number of containers could be inspected.","PeriodicalId":317634,"journal":{"name":"2005 IEEE Design Symposium, Systems and Information Engineering","volume":"45 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-04-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"116697063","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Runways are a limiting factor at airports where consumer demand continues to increase and/or runway construction has been limited by land constraints. One approach to raise system capacity and to lower bottlenecks is to reduce the time separations between aircraft during the approach phases of flight. Such changes should be quantified to document the safety impacts of separation reductions. A team of systems engineering students from George Mason University has developed the initial design for a runway monitoring system, the Runway Operational Quality Assurance (ROQA) system. Similar to the FAA flight operational quality assurance (FOQA) system that analyzes individual aircraft operational flight data,. ROQA is designed to provide operational performance measurements of approach runway operations. ROQA data is analyzed for operational parameter exceedences and statistical distributions are calculated to determine collision risk.","PeriodicalId":317634,"journal":{"name":"2005 IEEE Design Symposium, Systems and Information Engineering","volume":"61 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-04-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126267165","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The goal is to analyze the Brazilian offshore aviation safety culture by mapping the system through an investigation of the most recent helicopter accident that took place in the Campos Basin off the coast of Rio de Janeiro. The research revealed several safety issues as well as how the relevant organizations are interrelated. On the surface, it would seem that there may be a lack of regulations or safety procedures for the system. In reality, one of the main problems detected was a lack of coordination and absence of information sharing as set by the regulations already in place. The big question is how to get these organizations to work cooperatively to create a better safety culture.","PeriodicalId":317634,"journal":{"name":"2005 IEEE Design Symposium, Systems and Information Engineering","volume":"5 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-04-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"129811760","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Other fields have studied the topic, however, with results we can compile into a broad characterization of habile (tool-using) agents. In this paper we give an overview of research on the use of physical tools, using this information to motivate a set of requirements for building artificial habile agents. We describe the design of a habile robot, based on the Aibo platform, that can pick up a stick and use it as a tool to reach objects otherwise out of its range. We argue that analysis of activities of such tool-using agents offers an informative way to evaluate intelligence.","PeriodicalId":317634,"journal":{"name":"2005 IEEE Design Symposium, Systems and Information Engineering","volume":"3 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-04-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126445937","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Xiao et al. (2001) have examined the interaction of caregivers with the non-computerized whiteboards in the trauma center operating room unit, and have found that there exist intrapersonal as well as interpersonal systems of communication. Computerized tools, such as virtual public displays that replace traditional whiteboards, may hinder or support communication between caregivers. In a different domain, Watts et al. (1996) have documented the existence and utility of \"voice loops\" in NASA space shuttle mission control. In this observational study, we examine the interpersonal communication between caregivers in the ED with public display tools, in order to reveal the role of public tools in collaborative work. Nurses, physicians, and mid-level providers will be shadowed, and communication events documented, for 48 hours across 12 shifts, in a large, tertiary care hospital, ED setting. Results will provide insight into the role that non-computerized tools play in interpersonal communication, and also implicate the importance of various roles in which future public display tools in such settings may need to integrate.","PeriodicalId":317634,"journal":{"name":"2005 IEEE Design Symposium, Systems and Information Engineering","volume":"46 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-04-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124874248","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In Richmond. Virginia there are fourteen safety-net healthcare clinics that serve the general needs of indigent patients. The current referral procedure relies on the clinic's ability to find an appropriate specialist through favors and acquaintances, which is unorganized and inefficient. To solve this problem we designed a secure, user-friendly electronic referral system for use by all fourteen clinics. This system matches patients to specialists based on several clinic inputs, allows the clinics to record appointments made with specialists, and provides reports that display statistics on the clinics and specialists themselves. We designed the system in three tiers to ensure its integration and acceptance into the Richmond community. The final product sees the convergence of several e-health processes into one system. Lack of health insurance hinders millions of Americans from receiving adequate specialist health care. In addition, shortcomings in the current medical referral system reduce the timely care that patients need. These factors adversely affect the patient's health, family members, livelihood, and community. Our team designed an electronic medical referral system for the indigent population in Richmond, Virginia, which facilitate specialist health care for the uninsured and underinsured. This paper discusses the rationale and impact of this project, the design of the referral system, and the current implementation of it.","PeriodicalId":317634,"journal":{"name":"2005 IEEE Design Symposium, Systems and Information Engineering","volume":"9 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2005-04-29","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132730331","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The users of the Web site identified several deficiencies with the Web site. This paper presents methods to address these deficiencies; as a result the Web site has been redesigned in terms of aesthetics and functionality. The improved Web site will help the department with its commitment to full compliance with university, ACC, and NCAA regulations, as well as state and federal law. Violations of those regulations could result in severe sanctions or legal liability for the department, which could lead to a substantial loss of reputation and funding for the university.
