In some countries, regulations impose realization of national roaming as a fallback strategy, e.g., when an operator cannot offer sufficient coverage while the other can. However, tighter inter-operator collaboration can unlock even more opportunities. In this work, we quantify the benefits in terms of coverage, capacity, and power consumption that can be gained by national roaming as a fallback strategy and as a default strategy wherein all MNOs are operated as a single network. We use public data from national bodies in the Netherlands to study the gains for the Dutch MNOs and investigate the resilience gain also under random failures of base stations, e.g., due to hardware or software errors. Our analysis shows that all MNOs can benefit from a tight cooperation reflected in lower fraction of disconnected population, higher fraction of satisfied population, and lower power consumption for transmission. Despite not offering the same level of benefits, NR as a fallback strategy can also offer gains, in particular for MNOs with less ubiquitous network deployment. Moreover, in comparison to no cooperation, both cooperation approaches provide resilience to isolated failures and result in less severe performance degradation.","PeriodicalId":31737,"journal":{"name":"Edutech","volume":"14 1","pages":"1-6"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-06-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"89846380","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

A critical trade-off for transmission performance (packet delivery ratio) versus energy conservation (and hence, the device lifespan) appears when deciding the transmission parameters, in particular, the Spreading Factor (SF) to be used by each node. In this paper, we use lightweight reinforcement learning techniques, namely multi-armed bandits, for each node to select an appropriate SF, based on preferences regarding that trade-off. Unlike previous works on that topic, we relax some assumptions to aim at a realistic implementation: our solution does not assume immediate rewards, or that each device communicates with only one gateway. Additionally, we build explicit MAC commands for the method to work in practice and implement it in the ns-3 simulator using a state-of-the-art LoRaWAN module. We share the source code of our implementation and our simulation results. Those simulations show that when energy conservation is critical for IoT nodes, such lightweight learning algorithms outperform LoRaWAN's legacy Adaptive Data Rate algorithm, both in single- and multi-gateway scenarios.","PeriodicalId":31737,"journal":{"name":"Edutech","volume":"25 1","pages":"1-9"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-06-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"83278337","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

At the same time, they remain infamous for becoming insecure as new exploits arise. Software dataplanes give us the power to retrofit security functions, and are well-researched in datacentres. Yet the server-grade hardware such frameworks are optimised for is a poor fit for vulnerable low-power, low-space IoT gateways. Single-board computers (SBCs) are a cheaper and better fit on all these metrics, yet no service function chaining (SFC) approaches are tailored to these devices. In addition, modern OS features like XDP give us the capability to minimise power use and provide the lowest latency processing these devices can offer—meaning quicker response to network events, suited to the needs of the network edge. We present Galette, a device-portable SFC framework designed for the inexpensive defence of IoT networks by SBCs. Galette builds on Linux's XDP tooling to provide a CPU-efficient, low latency dataplane. Due to SBC hardware designs, we divide traffic between an XDP fast path and userland to schedule expensive packet analysis without harming normal traffic. Our API makes it easy to write network functions (NFs) that compile to both eBPF and native code, while being portable across heterogeneous SBCs. Testbed evaluations show Galette is more efficient and uses less power than AF_PACKET on Raspberry Pi.","PeriodicalId":31737,"journal":{"name":"Edutech","volume":"148 1","pages":"1-9"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-06-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"86653695","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

SmartNICs) are a viable alternative to reduce the gap between network bandwidths, currently at the scale of multi-hundred Gbps, and the server CPU processing capacity. This has rapidly led to many efforts exploring SmartNICs for offloading or accelerating applications that traditionally run solely on servers (e.g., key-value stores, data analytics). Despite the success of this paradigm, the suitability of SmartNICs for running security applications, specially those that heavily rely on cryptographic operations, still remains largely unstudied. In this paper, we aim at filling this gap and provide the first in-depth analysis of current SmartNICs' crypto capabilities. Our experiments with an ARM-based multi-core SmartNIC show that the device depends heavily on architecture enhancements (e.g., cryptographic instructions and hardware accelerators) to meet server performance on crypto-workloads. Moreover, data movements between the SmartNIC and crypto-hardware accelerator cores can introduce significant overhead and make the latter ineffective, particularly for short living tasks. From a service perspective, SmartNICs can take advantage of their privileged position (i.e., closer to client devices than server CPUs) to speed up crypto-based functions. However, the SmartNIC benefits can be easily outweighed if the application is too much data-intensive or includes several noncrypto tasks.","PeriodicalId":31737,"journal":{"name":"Edutech","volume":"1 1","pages":"1-9"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-06-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"74828864","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

With Internet monitoring platforms providing an unparalleled amount of data, it becomes necessary to automate their treatment. In particular, segmenting these delays permits supervising infrastructures and analyzing possible incidents. This paper explores the use of hierarchical clustering for the segmentation of multivariate network delays. The proposed method offers a computationally efficient way to identify the spatial correlation of network delay and to jointly segment time series within the same cluster. A post-treatment step is introduced that involves the Viterbi algorithm to smooth segmentation and handle the temporal dependency more effectively. This global method is evaluated on two real-world datasets, demonstrating its suitability for managing delays with varying variance and changing patterns. The proposed approach provides an efficient and cost-effective method for automated delay characterization.","PeriodicalId":31737,"journal":{"name":"Edutech","volume":"26 1","pages":"1-9"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-06-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"74829456","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Nevertheless, I0MT networks are still vulnerable to a wide range of threats because of their heterogeneity and resource-constrained characteristics. Thus, novel security mechanisms such as accurate and efficient intrusion detection systems (IDSs), taking into consideration the inherent limitations of the I0MT networks, are required to be developed before I0MT networks reach their full potential in the market. In our previous works, we presented the system architecture of a novel hybrid anomaly-based IDS (AIDS) for I0MT networks and the implementation of its prototype. The next step is the testing and evaluation of the performance of the proposed AIDS under different types of attacks. However, there is a lack of existing IoT testbeds that can be used to test and evaluate the performance of an AIDS as a whole system running on different IoT devices, networks and platforms, and being under different types of IoT attacks. Therefore, in this paper, we present the development of a functional IoT/IoMT security testbed for testing and evaluating AIDSs. In addition, we intend this work to serve as a guidance for other researchers or engineers who aim to develop specific IoT/IoMT testbeds for evaluating their own AIDSs under different types of IoT attacks.","PeriodicalId":31737,"journal":{"name":"Edutech","volume":"94 1","pages":"1-6"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-06-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"76065492","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This opens a large computing market and brings challenges for efficient resource management. In this paper, we study the joint optimization problem of planning cost-efficient edge networks, allocating link and computation resources, as well as scheduling and routing user requests in edge computing networks with arbitrary topologies and multiple ingress nodes. We formulate this problem as a Stackelberg game where the network operator, as the leader, aims at maximizing its profit, and the edge nodes, as the followers, minimize their users' costs and latency. Then, we prove the existence of the generalized Nash equilibrium for the follower subgame, and the Stackelberg equilibrium for the leader-follower game. We further propose a distributed best-response algorithm for the follower game and an alternating leader-follower optimization algorithm for the full game to compute the equilibrium and prove its convergence. A centralized optimization incorporating both profit and network latency targets is formulated and solved, which serves as benchmark for the game solution. Extensive numerical results demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed game, achieving near-optimal planning and scheduling solutions in a very short time even for large-scale edge networks.","PeriodicalId":31737,"journal":{"name":"Edutech","volume":"27 1","pages":"1-9"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-06-12","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"78210968","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This paper presents GuRuChain, a platform framework for online service trading. It combines on-chain and off-chain trust management to provide a blockchain system suitable for trust-related applications. The platform does not only ensure the recording of online transactions; but also the deliverance of offline services. In GuRuChain, we propose a mathematical model to assess the trustworthiness of each participant. We also introduce an incentive mechanism based on reputation and guarantee to monitor the participants' behavior. Finally, we maintain the consistency of the BC through the proposed consensus scheme called Proof Guarantee and Reputation (PoGR).
