Although the focus has been on the physical and technical-tactical demands of the game, recently more attention is being paid to its mental demands and, more specifically, the importance of mental fatigue. This literature review provides an overview of mental fatigue in padel. First, we consider the mentally fatiguing nature of padel. Padel players must make complex decisions under high-time pressure, maintain self-confidence, and communicate with their partners in an emotionally charged context. With these cognitive demands, it is not surprising that padel matches and tournaments are mentally fatiguing. Second, we review evidence confirming that mental fatigue is detrimental for padel players’ performance, in agreement with findings observed in other sports. Third, we evaluate strategies to tackle mental fatigue and its effects on padel performance. Until now, the only proven long-term countermeasure is Brain Endurance Training. Finally, we make a series of recommendations for coaches and players to deal with mental fatigue, that focus on the quantification and modulation of mental fatigue among padel players. We strongly recommend i. to include subjective ratings of mental fatigue (i.e., VAS scale) before and after training and competitive matches, ii. to reduce the cognitive load of training before competitions by, for example, use positive feedback or habitual training exercises, and iii. to use Brain Endurance Training during non-competitive moments of the season.\u0000 ","PeriodicalId":316293,"journal":{"name":"Padel Scientific Journal","volume":"3 5","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-01-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139524094","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The sample comprised 28 female paddle players, with an average age of 39.93 years (±11.94), playing in the first and fourth regional paddle divisions. We employed the Games and Emotion Scale (GES) survey to collect data. The study findings indicate that emotions linked with positive connotations ranked the highest, followed by uncertain emotions, while negative emotions garnered lower ratings. Additionally, it was found that fourth division players exhibited more pronounced levels of positive and ambiguous emotions compared to first division players. Playing on the home side of the court yielded positive nuanced emotions, indicating statistically significant differences, and eliciting higher ratings of ambiguous emotions, whilst reducing the impact of negative emotions. The study found notable variations in positive and ambiguous emotions among first division players when playing on their home side. In conclusion, the study revealed that winning matches evoked emotions with positive and ambiguous connotations, exhibiting significant variations, irrespective of the competitive level. This investigation affirms that paddle tennis competitions elicit diverse emotional responses in players. Of noteworthy significance is the occurrence of positive emotions at an intense level among players, triggered by winning and playing on their respective sides of the court.","PeriodicalId":316293,"journal":{"name":"Padel Scientific Journal","volume":"11 50","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-01-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139523721","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Eleven young tennis players (4 girls, 7 boys; age: 13.36 ± .5; weight: 46.54 ± 7.97; height: 160.45 ± 8.38; APHV 12.90 ± .51) participated and were randomly assigned to an experimental group (EG), which underwent neuromuscular training twice a week for 10 weeks, or a control group (CG), which followed only their regular tennis training without physical preparation. Performance was measured by variables such as bilateral and unilateral countermovement jump (CMJ), 30cm drop jump (DJ) bilateral and unilateral, bilateral and unilateral horizontal jump (SH), modified 505 agility test (CD) performed with both right and left legs, 20-meter sprint (20m), 3kg medicine ball throw (BM) overhead, and the Course- Navette test (CN). The impact of the training was determined by effect size. The results showed that the EG significantly improved in all variables while the CG did not, indicating that implementing a neuromuscular training program may be an effective method for improving the performance of young competitive tennis players, enhancing their physical attributes in both lower and upper body.","PeriodicalId":316293,"journal":{"name":"Padel Scientific Journal","volume":"9 26","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-01-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139523846","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This study aims to examine the physiological performance and subjective perception of stress and fatigue in top-20 padel players during matches. Seven elite players participated in the study. Various variables were evaluated, such as subjective perception of effort and stress, isometric grip strength, reaction time, and jump performance, both before and after the matches. The results showed significant increases in subjective perception of effort, perceived stress, and performance in vertical countermovement and squat jumps, as well as in horizontal jumps after the matches. However, no significant changes were observed in reaction time, free-arm jumps, and grip strength (although significant differences were observed between the dominant and non-dominant hand). These findings suggest that the physical conditioning of high-level padel players allows them to endure the fatigue of matches. The differences between the dominant and non-dominant hand indicate asymmetries due to the one-sided nature of this sport. Reaction time did not decrease, suggesting that the level of fatigue was not sufficient to limit the information processing of these athletes. Perceived stress, with widely dispersed values far from the maximum, was consistent with the reaction and adaptation times of the players. The repeated decelerations and accelerations from the backcourt to the net (and vice versa) did not produce excessive fatigue but rather muscular activation, which was evident in horizontal jumps. These findings contribute to understanding the physiological aspects of padel and can be used for the development of training programs that optimize performance and minimize the perception of fatigue in players.","PeriodicalId":316293,"journal":{"name":"Padel Scientific Journal","volume":"25 4","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-01-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"140502250","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, there are still scarce research that analyse in depth the conditional characteristics of padel players according to the side of the court which they play on. Several studies have evaluated the explosive strength of the lower body in racket sports, but in padel the existing evidence is scarce, limited and heterogeneous, especially regarding the side of play, and particularly in women's competition. In this sense, the aim of this study is focused on evaluating and analysing the manifestations of active and reactive strength of the lower body in women's padel according to the side of play. The squat jump test (SJ) and the countermovement test (CMJ) were used to assess the active and reactive manifestations of lower limb strength, in addition to the power performed. The results obtained showed no significant differences in the height of the SJ and CMJ jumps, neither in the power performed. However, it can be seen that all the physical variables analysed are slightly higher in those players located on the left side of the court. Depending on the side of play, the differences found could be the result of specific chronic muscular adaptations derived from highly specialized training and competition. The results obtained suggested the need to design and carry out differentiated trainings taking according to the side of the game in which the players compete in padel tennis. Further research is needed to contrast the results found in this investigation.","PeriodicalId":316293,"journal":{"name":"Padel Scientific Journal","volume":"10 17","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2024-01-20","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"139524419","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Method: pre- and post-SC serum creatinine, urea and creatine kinase (CK), and urine specific gravity and erythrocytes of twenty-nine professional padel players (16 women, 13 men) were quantified. A two-way ANOVA was used to show any differences in the studied variables (p values < 0.05). Results: significant differences were found before and after the SC for creatinine (p < 0.05) and erythrocytes (p < 0.01). Differences were found for creatinine (p < 0.001), CK (p < 0.01) and specific gravity between sexes (p < 0.05). No game side court effect was found. Conclusion: padel SC produced an increase in serum creatinine and hemolysis, probably caused by game dynamics. Sex differences were found in serum creatinine and CK, presumably due to anthropometric gender differences. Both sexes finished the SCs in a dehydrated state, affecting it more to men, something which should be considered to prevent and alleviate its potential negative effects in performance. More studies should be carried out to confirm these data.","PeriodicalId":316293,"journal":{"name":"Padel Scientific Journal","volume":"20 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-06-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127885151","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
