Since spatial data is more complex than non-spatial data, performing distributed queries on it requires the consideration of both local processing (i.e. CPU and I/O) time and data transmission cost. To reduce these costs, one can use a distributed spatial semi join as it eliminates unnecessary objects before their transmission to other sites and the query site. In this paper, we propose both new approaches for representing the spatial semi join in a distributed setting, and their use for processing distributed queries consisting of any number of sites. We have tested our algorithms for four sites, which are a part of an actual working distributed system. We compare our algorithms with respect to data transmission cost, CPU time, I/O time and false positive results. We show that our algorithms are superior in many cases at optimizing the above criteria.","PeriodicalId":316052,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE 28th International Conference on Advanced Information Networking and Applications","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-05-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130459148","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This leads to several problems including the interruption of existing connections when switching interfaces, complete loss of connectivity when the selected network is not functioning correctly, and significantly less bandwidth to the device than is possible if the available wireless capacity is aggregated. While interface bonding is not new, aggregating two such diverse networks is particularly challenging given that different wireless technologies, and even different networks of the same type, offer inconsistent link parameters, presenting dynamically fluctuating bandwidth, latency, and packet loss. In this paper we present a simple, but extremely efficient, hashing technique for multi-interface packet scheduling. We have implemented our system with aggregation proxies running in well-connected data centers and client code running on a Galaxy Nexus running Android 4.1. Our experimental results show that our prototype never loses connectivity even when networks fail as long as at least one network is functioning, does not break connections as interface selection is adjusted, and can increase bandwidth to the smartphone to the available aggregated network capacities. Transmission time is reduced by up to 60% vs. using a single network interface.","PeriodicalId":316052,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE 28th International Conference on Advanced Information Networking and Applications","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-05-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"128804938","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Spectrum handoff happens when a Primary Users (PUs) appears in a spectrum band that is occupied by a Secondary User (SU). In such a case, SU should empty this spectrum band and perform a handoff procedure and search for an available free one. This process will be continued until the SU completes its data transmission. To avoid multiple spectrum handoffs, the spectrum handoff procedure should be performed in the unlicensed channels rather than the licensed channels. Thus, the number of handoffs can be reduced as no more spectrum handoffs will occur since all users have priority in this type of spectrum channel. This technique will help secondary users' QoS from degradation. This paper proposes a prioritized spectrum handoff decision scheme in a mixture spectrum environment of unlicensed and licensed channels, in order to reduce the handoff delay. The licensed channels in the proposed scheme have been modelled using a pre-emptive resume priority (PRP) M/M/C queue. In contrast, the unlicensed channels have been modelled using an M/M/C retrial priority queue. In order to examine the performance of the implemented model, the handoff and new SUs are considered with equal and different priorities. Experimental results show that the prioritized handoff scheme outperforms the other scheme in terms of average handoff delay under various traffic arrival rates as well as the number of licensed and unlicensed channels used.","PeriodicalId":316052,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE 28th International Conference on Advanced Information Networking and Applications","volume":"102 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-05-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126835741","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

We combine the designs of COI hierarchical management for scalability and reconfigurability with COI dynamic trust management for survivability and intrusion tolerance to compose a scalable, reconfigurable, and survivable COI management protocol for managing COI mission-oriented mobile groups in heterogeneous mobile environments. A COI mobile group in this environment would consist of heterogeneous mobile entities such as communication-device-carried personnel/robots and aerial or ground vehicles operated by humans exhibiting not only quality of service (QoS) characters, e.g., competence and cooperativeness, but also social behaviors, e.g., connectivity, intimacy and honesty. A COI commander or a subtask leader must measure trust with both social and QoS cognition depending on mission task characteristics and/or trustee properties to ensure successful mission execution. In this paper, we present a dynamic hierarchical trust management protocol that can learn from past experiences and adapt to changing environment conditions, e.g., increasing misbehaving node population, evolving hostility and node density, etc. to enhance agility and maximize application performance. With trust-based misbehaving node detection as an application, we demonstrate how our proposed COI trust management protocol is resilient to node failure, disconnection and capture events, and can help maximize application performance in terms of minimizing false negatives and positives in the presence of mobile nodes exhibiting vastly distinct QoS and social behaviors.","PeriodicalId":316052,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE 28th International Conference on Advanced Information Networking and Applications","volume":"33 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-05-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"123375985","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In Forwarding Data Energy Efficiently with Load Balancing in Wireless Body Area Networks (FEEL), a forwarder node is incorporated which reduces the transmission distance between sender and receiver to save energy of other nodes. Nodes consume energy in an efficient manner resulting in longer stability period. Nodes measuring electrocardiography (ECG) and glucose level send their data directly to the sink in order to have minimum delay. Simulation results show that FEEL protocol achieves improved stability period and throughput. As a result it helps in continuous monitoring of patients in WBANs.","PeriodicalId":316052,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE 28th International Conference on Advanced Information Networking and Applications","volume":"PP 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-05-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126414629","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Thereby, the acquisition of network traffic data is one of the first steps. The acquisition of network traffic, however, can be very challenging, e.g., with respect to performance and resource requirements. In this paper, we analyze the possibility of using packet header data for efficiently partitioning live network traffic data into subsets with the aim on enabling distributed packet capturing and processing. The goal is to employ multiple sensors in a coordinated fashion such that the overall task is distributed among the participating sensors. Our results show that efficiently partitioning live network traffic based on packet header data is possible. Furthermore, we implemented a prototype of a distributed packet capturing system that achieves significantly higher capture rates than a single, uncoordinated sensor.","PeriodicalId":316052,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE 28th International Conference on Advanced Information Networking and Applications","volume":"61 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-05-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126292864","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Generally, QoS parameters are used to select the most performing web services, however, these parameters do not necessarily reflect the user's satisfaction. Therefore, it is necessary to estimate the quality of web services on the basis of user satisfaction, i.e., Quality of Experience(QoE). In this paper, we propose a novel method based on a fuzzy-rough hybrid expert system for estimating QoE of web services for web service selection. It also presents how different QoS parameters impact the QoE of web services. For this, we conducted subjective tests in controlled environment with real users to correlate QoS parameters to subjective QoE. Based on this subjective test, we derive membership functions and inference rules for the fuzzy system. Membership functions are derived using a probabilistic approach and inference rules are generated using Rough Set Theory (RST). We evaluated our system in a simulated environment in MATLAB. The simulation results show that the estimated web quality from our system has a high correlation with the subjective QoE obtained from the participants in controlled tests.","PeriodicalId":316052,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE 28th International Conference on Advanced Information Networking and Applications","volume":"202 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-05-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121685063","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Moreover, many organizations and content providers have been publishing and sharing their information through XML and its standard schemas. In this context, it is extremely important when designing new schemas or enhancing current ones, there is a mechanism to ensure that the schemas will be well-designed versions. In this paper, we develop a tool that aids schema developers and standard groups to track XML schema changes, log them, and help in the enhancement of a particular schema version. We develop a schema monitoring tool called XSM, which efficiently stores and retrieves versioned XSDs and evaluates them based on the quality indicators defined for this purpose. The quality of delta changes in the schema versions is examined through a set of synthetic XSDs.","PeriodicalId":316052,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE 28th International Conference on Advanced Information Networking and Applications","volume":"5 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-05-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"125311999","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In the past, having access to different servers in different locations in the world used to be a very hard task. This scenario has changed in recent years with the introduction of Planet Lab, a distributed laboratory with 1000+ servers spread in the five continents for developing experiments and measurements in a planetary scale. However, Planet Lab currently has some limitations that sometimes prevent researchers to perform reliable experiments. This paper presents a large-scale measurement study in Planet Lab aiming at shedding some light into the availability of resources for performing experimental research on it. Results show that users should take extra care when designing and deploying experiments in Planet Lab, due to high instability and heterogeneity of the available resources.","PeriodicalId":316052,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE 28th International Conference on Advanced Information Networking and Applications","volume":"43 4","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-05-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114026094","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Thus, a major research challenge in the area of UbiComp is related to context awareness. Considering the high distribution, heterogeneity, dynamism, and mobility of ubiquitous environments, this paper presents an architecture for context awareness, named UbiC (Ubiquitous Context awareness), which is integrated to EXEHDA middleware (Execution Environment for Highly Distributed Applications). We consider that the main contribution of this work is an architecture that enables the acquisition, storage, and processing of context data, in a distributed way, independently of the application, in a rule-based autonomic perspective, and with support to mobility. To assess the functionalities of the UbiC architecture, we present a case study, highlighting prototypes developed, technologies employed, and tests realized.","PeriodicalId":316052,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE 28th International Conference on Advanced Information Networking and Applications","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-05-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"131221117","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
