In this paper, we propose an end-to-end measurement method for the hop-by-hop available bandwidth along a network path. Such a technique can facilitate advanced traffic control, especially in heterogeneous network environments. The proposed method assumes a situation where intermediate routers can record the arrival and departure times of incoming packets as timestamps in the packets themselves. The end host sends probe packets at various rates and estimates the available bandwidth at each network section using the incoming and outgoing rates of packets calculated from intermediate timestamps, based on statistical processing under a fluid traffic model. We present extensive simulation results for the proposed method and confirm that it can accurately measure the available bandwidth of each section along the network path even when the available bandwidth of the sender-side network is smaller than that of the receiver-side network.","PeriodicalId":316052,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE 28th International Conference on Advanced Information Networking and Applications","volume":"143 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-05-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127170601","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This work assumes that, due to the dynamic behaviors of the agents induced by the unpredictable availability of these devices and the dynamic of the tasks, it is not possible to devise an efficient coordination which uses prior knowledge about the information of the agents ahead of task achievements. In these contexts, we provide both protocols called depth exploration protocol and width exploration protocol which are based on the formalism of the MDP (Markov Decision Process) and on alliance principle. The aim of our protocols is to ensure and to adapt dynamically the stability of the agent's coordination teams (coalitions) which take into account the agent's withdrawal and the dynamic evolving of the tasks. We develop a theoretical study of our mechanism and we provide an analytical and experimental performance evaluation.","PeriodicalId":316052,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE 28th International Conference on Advanced Information Networking and Applications","volume":"27 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-05-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127359780","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Indeed, most of the research efforts in situation-awareness are generally focused on the implementation of common characteristics, differing basically on the relevant context observed and how this contextual information is managed. Consequently, little attention has been paid to an abstract and general view for situation-awareness. The goal of this work is to provide a shift of the attention focus from the implementation to the modeling phase. Our objectives are (1) to define the conceptual modeling of situation-awareness for adaptive and ubiquitous learning systems, (2) to identify its relevant concepts, relationships, and structural, dynamic and representational elements, (3) to propose a method for situation detection. The domain concepts are explored by an application scenario that allows the understanding of the situations configured in u-learning systems and their dynamic factors. The conceptual model was implemented in the CONIC module, which was evaluated in an e-learning system specifying the application and constructing the improvements necessaries to deploy the system in a real application for tests.","PeriodicalId":316052,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE 28th International Conference on Advanced Information Networking and Applications","volume":"13 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-05-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114932926","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

There has been considerable research on associated monitoring techniques and on the automated analysis of the resulting data. We integrate these processes within an intelligent heart monitoring system. Designed to fit in with the daily life of a subject, it uses smartphone and web applications to link to a monitoring station via a decision support server. This server analyzes heart activity using the well-known Pan-Tompkins algorithm to detect heartbeats and a decision tree to classify them. We have simulated these analyses with data from the MIT-BIH Arrhythmia Database, and found that the server software had a 97% success rate in heartbeat detection and almost 97% accuracy in heartbeat classification.","PeriodicalId":316052,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE 28th International Conference on Advanced Information Networking and Applications","volume":"5 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-05-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126915161","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

However, the need for new metrics arose to be able to measure the influences of communication characteristics on the application performance more precisely. Hence, we proposed the Consecutive CAM Period (CCP) as a suitable metric. In this paper we discuss the advantages of using the CCP compared to the classical communication metrics as the Packet Delivery Ratio (PDR). In a short evaluation study we furthermore present a method that helps to approach two issues. 1) The time and space dependent nature of the CCP facilitates to detect if use cases actually exist or not. 2) Particularly, the evaluation of the maximum CCP guaranties that certain situations are not missed compared to the usage of metrics with an arithmetic mean calculation.","PeriodicalId":316052,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE 28th International Conference on Advanced Information Networking and Applications","volume":"8 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-05-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"114357469","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Developing WSN applications poses a challenge due to massive distribution of the network nodes. The automatic generation of applications reduces drastically costs, since the manual development is a laborious process. In our approach, the user describes the desired global behavior as a fitness function which guides the evolution of the application by the GP. A scripting language based on events and actions is used to represent the WSN behavior and the GP generates programs in this language. In order to evaluate the framework, a problem of multiple events detection is introduced. Several problem instances were used to appraise the performance of our method under different parameters. Results evidence the feasibility of our approach for the proposed problem, highlighting the challenges posed by the large search space and the dead end routing problem.","PeriodicalId":316052,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE 28th International Conference on Advanced Information Networking and Applications","volume":"15 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-05-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124512003","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

These telematics services require that servers and consumer devices, such as smartphones and car navigation terminals, transmit large amounts of small data through uplink. Developing methods to decrease the data size that is transmitted is one of the most significant issues in this field because of the cost of transmission for consumers and service providers. In this paper, we propose a new data compression method for application to telematics technology, which deletes redundant data and applies an appropriate compression method for a given situation. We evaluated the proposed method and report positive results.","PeriodicalId":316052,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE 28th International Conference on Advanced Information Networking and Applications","volume":"74 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-05-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"134139643","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The outside attackers can be prevented with the help of an efficient key management protocol and cryptography. However, to prevent inside attackers, it should be accompanied with an intrusion detection system (IDS). In this paper, we propose a novel secure routing with an integrated localized key management (SR-LKM) protocol, which is aimed to prevent both inside and outside attackers. The localized key management mechanism is not dependent on any routing protocol. Thus, unlike many other existing schemes, the protocol does not suffer from the key management - secure routing interdependency problem. The key management mechanism is lightweight as it optimizes the use of public key cryptography with the help of a novel neighbor based handshaking and Least Common Multiple (LCM) based broadcast key distribution mechanism. The protocol is storage scalable and its efficiency is confirmed by the results obtained from simulation experiments.","PeriodicalId":316052,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE 28th International Conference on Advanced Information Networking and Applications","volume":"184 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-05-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132977386","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Due to the randomness of DCF, the coding delay, defined as the time that a packet must wait for a coding opportunity, may increase and degrade the network performance. In this paper, we study the potential impact of the coding delay in the performance of TCP over IEEE 802.11s infrastructure wireless mesh networks. By means of simulation, we evaluate the formation of coding opportunities at the mesh access points. We find that as TCP traffic increases, the coding opportunities rise up to 70% and the coding delay increases considerably. We propose to adjust dynamically the maximum time that a packet can wait in the coding queues to reduce the coding delay. We evaluate different moving-average estimation methods for this aim. Our results show that the coding delay may be reduced with these methods using at the same time an estimation threshold. This threshold increases the estimation's mean in order to exploit a high percentage of the coding opportunities.","PeriodicalId":316052,"journal":{"name":"2014 IEEE 28th International Conference on Advanced Information Networking and Applications","volume":"24 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2014-05-13","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133453306","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
