This condition is commonly missed by the parents due to lack of objective symptoms especially in young children, in turn leading to learning difficulties and communication problems. This study focused on the incidental finding of asymptomatic, undiagnosed otitis media with effusion in children with adenotonsillar diseases admitted for adenoidectomy or adenotonsillectomy (aged 2-12 years) Methods: A cross sectional study conducted from January 2020 to February 2021. We randomly selected 110 children (aged 2-12 years), admitted purely for adenoidectomy or adenotonsillectomy at Rizgari Teaching Hospital in Erbil / Iraq. Those with acute upper respiratory tract infection, other otological problems, or craniofacial abnormalities were excluded. Selected children were examined by otoscopy and sent for tympanometry preoperatively. Results: Of total 110 patients, 23 (20.9%) cases had hidden, undiagnosed otitis media with effusion, which was missed by parents (14.5% bilateral, 6.4% unilateral). The majority (n= 15; 65.2%) in (5-8) years age group (mean age of 5.1 years) (p=0.02), with gender distribution; males (n = 15; 65.2%), females (n= 8; 34.8%) (p=0.123). Conclusion: Adenotonsillar disease carries an extra risk for developing otitis media with effusion in children. Otoscopic examination and simple test such as tympanometry can diagnose this condition in order to take the necessary steps for management and prevent future complications.","PeriodicalId":314832,"journal":{"name":"Advanced medical journal","volume":"37 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-05-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130219514","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This study aimed to address the diagnostic precision of magnetic resonance imaging as a brain investigation tool to evaluate meningioma diagnosis and tumor staging before performing the operation. Methods: This study designed as a cross-sectional study and carried out between December 2019 and December 2020. A total number of 48 meningiomas resected and evaluated at three public hospitals in Erbil City. Pre-operative magnetic resonance imaging investigation and postoperative histopathological evaluation were done for all patients for their intracranial tumors and tissue sections. Results: Majority of patients showed isointense pattern on T1 (87.5%) and T2 (85.4%) signal intensity, homogenous in consistency (81.3%), the vast majority of the meningiomas were typical (93.8%) and of meningothelial type (81.3%). In most of the cases, there was no bone involvement (77.1%), no invasion of dural venous sinuses (83.3%), no calcifications (83.3%), no cystic changes (97.9%) but positive cerebral spinal fluid cleft (66.7%) and homogenous enhancement pattern (83.3%). Five out of eleven imaging patterns and configurations including T1 signal intensity, T2 signal intensity, consistency, calcification and vascularity of the meningioma were valid and reliable by calculating their sensitivity, specificity and running kappa test. Conclusions: Some magnetic resonance imaging patterns such as T1 signal intensity, T2 signal intensity, consistency, calcification, and vascularity of the meningioma are useful for predicting the stages of meningioma.","PeriodicalId":314832,"journal":{"name":"Advanced medical journal","volume":"16 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2023-05-18","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"126013635","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
