This article compares the situation about the reading skills and difficulties of these students in the year of 2009 and 2016. Students who participate were studying the course of Humanities offered by the UCR. In order to stablish the comparison, students filled a small survey; they also offered extra comments and expression which complement the questions asked. {"title":"Mentalidades y esclavitud en el Mundo Atlántico Colonial: estrategia didáctica para paliar el anacronismo","authors":"Mauricio Menjívar Ochoa","doi":"10.15517/RE.V0I0.27589","DOIUrl":"https://doi.org/10.15517/RE.V0I0.27589","url":null,"abstract":"This article shows a didactic strategy for the unit of the course of History of Culture at the Escuela de Estudios Generales in the Universidad de Costa Rica. This strategy corresponds to one of the units whose objective is to characterize the slavery at the Colonial Atlantic World. The purpose of this unit is to appreciate the implications of slavery in those human beings. First, this article shows the difficulty of understanding the mentality of the social subjects from the past because it seems an anachronism. Second, this strategy, inspired in methodology of inter-learning, is explained. Finally, this article exposes the evaluation of the different components of the strategy made by the students of the course. Although it is difficult for the students to stand in the shoes of the slavery people, the strategy help not only to acquire the knowledge in a dynamic way, but also to develop sensibility with the situation. The paper reviews this teaching method, a conceptualization and methodology that has been used since 1974. Through examples, the authors seek to visualize how course take joint and involve teaching, across of the importance of the application of theory, critical analysis and use of arguments. The work in seminars allows to generate a position in reference to reality, surpassing the routine and the stated desire among students to get a help by the teacher, to encourage reflection and internalization of knowledge. {"title":"El Mandato del Cielo 天命 y el emperador Han Gaozu汉高祖. Una lectura desde Max Weber y Hok-lam Chan","authors":"G. In order to study its conformation and the basis of the legitimacy of the emperors, I will begin this essay with an account of the origins of the doctrine. Then I will consider the problem of legitimacy during the dynastic China based on the legitimacy concept of sociologist Max Weber and of Hok-lam Chan, a recognized authority of this historical period. While Weber claimed that dynastic China was based on a charismatic domination and legitimacy, adapted one way or another to daily life, the fact is that the case of Han Gaozu汉高祖, founder of the Han Dynasty 汉 朝 , demonstrates that the basis of the legitimacy of dynastic China had other elements of legitimacy, sorted by Weber as rational and traditional. Also, Hok-lam Chan speaks of five forms of legitimacy: procedural, coercive, semantic, scholastic and popular. If these five categories are classified in the thought of Max Weber, one could observe how they share certain elements. By doing this, an integral legitimacy is formed, which the various rulers of the Chinese dynastic period needed to truly be worthy of the mandate of Heaven. Finally, I will discuss the case of Han Gaozu, as it is exceptional way to understand the usefulness of the doctrine of the Mandate of Heaven. Therefore, I will discuss why Han Gaozu mythologized his origins under the hypothesis that, although the legitimacy obtained by his personal talent –rational legitimacy- and the support of his followers –charismatic legitimacy-, with which he was able to become a ruler, was not enough for him to be considered a man \"worthy\" to receive the mandate of Heaven. The foundation of the National Meteorological Observatory (1887) and later the National Meteorological Institute (1888), brought a debate on the validity of meteorological observations in the country before the founding of the first institution. This question provoked an intense debate involving Henri Pittier, director of the Meteorological Institute and other actors members of the Costa Rican scientific community (Enrique Villavicencio, Pedro Nolasco Gutierrez, Carlos Francisco Salazar, Jose Moreno and Juan Fernandez Ferraz). They questioned the validity of the work of the scientific entity in the meteorological field. The background of this controversy is linked to the closure of the University of St. Thomas (1888) and the growing support that provided the Costa Rican government to scientists projects of Pittier.
