Consequently, the line density in the space is homogenized, the efficiency of utilization of the space is increased, and a stable normalization is obtained for partially irregular shape variations. The method consists of three parts: (1) detecting the eventual crack points, (2) locating the cluster of these points, i.e. the eventual crack; and (3) following and analyzing the eventual crack. A computer vision system was constructed to implement the method. The rough boundary is encoded in vector form by connecting the centroid of the region and its boundary points and resampling angularly. Thus the 2-D boundary is transformed into a 1-D discrete curve. The discrete Fourier transform (DFT) is applied to the transformed and resampled 1-D curve, and the Fourier descriptors are used to estimate the boundary of interest. Only a few of the harmonics (low-frequency components) are used for reconstruction of the boundary, and by adjusting the number of harmonics, a good estimation is obtained. These algorithms consist of the Foley-Sammon (F-S) transform, Hotelling trace criterion (HTC), Fukunaga-Koontz (F-K) transform, linear discriminant function (LDF), and generalized matched filter (GMF). It is shown that all these algorithms can be represented in a generalized eigenvector form, and that they differ in the ways in which they utilize the correlation matrices (F-K) or covariance matrices (F-S, HTC, etc.) to calculate the discriminant vectors. Some methods classify the images, or, instead, features of the images, in a reduced dimension. The system is organized around a homogeneous knowledge base. The used knowledge representation language is based on semantic networks. It does not only cover declarative but also procedural knowledge. The inference processes can be described by five problem-independent rules which form the procedural semantics of the network language. The control strategy itself is the well-known A*-algorithm, but for scoring purposes complex judgement vectors are used. It is shown that these vectors are admissible for the control algorithm and that they reflect the quality, the certainty, and the priority of both bottom-up and top-down hypotheses. From the raw data obtained by dip logging, a dip arrow plot can be obtained using the relation comparison method of pattern recognition. The data tend to be very much scattered and random. The design principle and method of an expert dip arrow plot pattern recognition system are described. It incorporates a mathematical model method and an artificial intelligence technique. An angle processing algorithm and an ordered sample grouping algorithm are proposed. This system has been implemented on an IBM-PC/XT and on compatible machines. Relationships are established between the DOS/sup +/ parameters and feature parameters to distinguish corner and curve features and to accurately determine the locations of corners, transitions between straight lines and curves, and curve centers. The method is applied to the automatic input of map data in a computer and also to recognition of line drawings. In the first process, the feature points of roads are calculated on the center lines of roads, and short vectors are made by connecting the feature points. Some of the vectors, corresponding to roads, are joined, and others are regarded as noise and removed in subsequent processes.
