Motivated by the problem of finding the destination address block on a piece of mail, a general framework for coordinating a collection of specialized image analysis tools is described. The resulting system can deal with a wide range of environments: from those having a high degree of global spatial structure (e.g. mail envelopes which conform to specifications) to those with no structure (e.g. magazines with randomly pasted address labels). The problem-solving architecture accounts for uncertainty in the imaging environment by using the blackboard model. The system consists of several specialized tools and a control structure so that the tools are opportunistically invoked and coordinated. Its performance on an image database of difficult cases is described.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":314236,"journal":{"name":"[1988 Proceedings] 9th International Conference on Pattern Recognition","volume":"338 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1988-11-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"121604419","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

It consists of four steps: computing an addition matrix, which assigns maximal values to the pixels on the medial axis; computing a comparative matrix; deleting the nonmaximum pixels; and deleting the endpoints. Experimental results show that this algorithm makes the skeleton closer to the medial axis and makes it more convenient to reconstruct the original pattern.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":314236,"journal":{"name":"[1988 Proceedings] 9th International Conference on Pattern Recognition","volume":"53 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1988-11-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"132355630","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

If the foreground is considered 8-connected, then the background has to be 4-connected, or vice versa. It is demonstrated that after certain topographic and possibly topological changes to a binary image, its foreground and background can both be considered 8-connected and the inconsistencies are eliminated. In particular, the foreground and background can be thinned using 8-connectivity. The erosion and dilatation problems that arise as a result of the changes can be overcome by constrained erosions and dilations which do not create possibilities of penetration or blocking of passages. After logical operations it is best to check the resultant image for penetration numbers.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":314236,"journal":{"name":"[1988 Proceedings] 9th International Conference on Pattern Recognition","volume":"1 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1988-11-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130050806","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

This method considers a set of corners, parallel lines, and so on as typical features of an object. Possible candidate models are estimated from these features, and structural matching is performed between these models and features obtained from a picture by checking the combinations of various features. Even if the whole structure is not obtained due to a partial occlusion, the system can infer an object if some unique features of the object are obtained. Partial shapes and extracted lines are matched in detail with model candidates when they are limited to one or a few.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":314236,"journal":{"name":"[1988 Proceedings] 9th International Conference on Pattern Recognition","volume":"40 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1988-11-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130152768","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Projections of the moving image are degraded because of image movement. It is clarified that projection of a moving image are convolved by the kernel function defined by the angular velocity of an image. A reconstruction method is derived for a clear image from degraded projections. An estimation method of the angular velocity is also proposed.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":314236,"journal":{"name":"[1988 Proceedings] 9th International Conference on Pattern Recognition","volume":"30 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1988-11-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"130170448","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Based on the description function of the primitive, the match rule is designed and four match constraints are used for eliminating the false match. A global to local control strategy is designed to accelerate the match process. This technique is used to obtain 3D measurements of human body, and to establish the surface representation for a computer-aided garment-design system. The results obtained indicate that this technique could also be used to acquire the 3D information for industrial parts and natural objects with smooth surfaces.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":314236,"journal":{"name":"[1988 Proceedings] 9th International Conference on Pattern Recognition","volume":"104 2 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1988-11-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"117311249","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Size-invariance is achieved in two ways. A coarse scaling is determined by the Laplacian pyramid. Taking the appropriate level, the variation of size is within a factor of two. Complete size-invariance is achieved by the specific choice of the features themselves, which are weighed distributions of directions and direction changes. These features are also comparatively invariant to different fonts but quite specific to the basic structure of a character.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":314236,"journal":{"name":"[1988 Proceedings] 9th International Conference on Pattern Recognition","volume":"134 2","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1988-11-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133017689","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The system is constructed with a production system. A scene is described with simple a surface patch network (planar or quadric) by examining the local curvature of objects. The region and edge network is interpreted with IF-THEN-like heuristic rules. The system can recognize smoothly joined curved surfaces and explain the structure of a scene consisting of plural objects. The experiments have been carried out with real range data.<<ETX>>","PeriodicalId":314236,"journal":{"name":"[1988 Proceedings] 9th International Conference on Pattern Recognition","volume":"36 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"1988-11-14","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133266381","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
