A part of the city which used to be on the outskirts starts to change rapidly. With the development and expansion of sports activities in the second half of the nineteenth century Racetrack becomes progressively important, calling for building of the first significant football pitches. The paper outlines the development of the sports facilities in 'Trkaliste', from the first track for the gallop races facilitated by Knez Mihailo through to the first football pitches whose building was initiated by the effort and financial means of the greatest Serbian intellectuals of the time. By chronologically analyzing every single pitch, their major architectural features become clearly noticeable. In a very short period they have transformed from disorganized fields into the architectural forms following standards of the Western world. In parallel with the development and urbanization of Belgrade between the two world wars, sports pitches in 'Trkaliste' gradually give place to the Technical University, the Svetozar Markovic University Library and the Serbian Archive, acquiring new and far more modern forms in the other locations. By analyzing archive materials, newspaper articles and photograph collections the degree of societal and architectural development becomes identifiable. The structure of the apartments included centrally located ante room with a combined function of the dining room and one or more salon areas. Most of these apartments were built in Belgrade, along with the first examples of apartments popularly named 'salon apartments', with the concept of spatial and functional organization later spreading to other larger urban centers in Serbia. One of the key problems emerging in scientific analysis of this type of residential housing is terminological determination of this concept. Defined by the most theorists as a kind of architectural production created on specific grounds of European urban reality in the mid-eighties of the past century, historically speaking, dirty realism coincides with the beginning of the Postmodern Era. The text aims to shed light on the spatial-economic and cultural context in which dirty realism was constituted as a movement, tendency or theoretical construct, as well as to make detailed reference to the typical theories of its protagonists - architects and theorists of architecture who participated in it. Given the fact that the reception of dirty realism in architectural discourse is based on a reductionist approach, the text will focus on the analysis of primary sources which point to several different possibilities to deal with this topic. On the one hand, the analysis of diverse visual manifestations shows all that dirty realism can be in a formalistic sense of the word. On the other, the text pays special attention to the comparison of theoretical models that were used in deriving and establishing the initial poetic and critical premises of dirty realism. It is represented by its position in global urban hierarchies, as an indicator of its importance and attractiveness for people and companies. Creative clusters present a way to stimulate creative economy in the city because the spatial concentration of creative companies and people additionally stimulates exchange of ideas and knowledge. Article explores complex dynamic between creative economy, cities and global hierarchies. The focus is on the role of creative clusters in the process of global positioning, especially in the case of Belgrade. The city has significantly improved its position in the global urban hierarchy - from a non-existing node in 2000, to the 'beta' level of global cities in 2008 (according to GaWC global urban hierarchy). Furthermore, in just four years (2008-2012), Belgrade improved its rank for three positions. This period overlaps with several interesting events - e.g. the initial phase of the largest regional creative festival and the development of a creative cluster in Savamala. Yet, his work and life have rarely been the subject of scholarly literature, while the study of his housing projects has been overlooked. This paper discusses housing projects designed by Kovalevsky mainly in collaboration with another Russian architect Vladimir Bilinski. The analysis of the projects is based on original archival plans, documents and photographs. Residential buildings designed during 1921-1923 by these two architects include small single-storey houses, multi-storey building and spacious villas. Although of different surface, volume and shape, they have some common characteristics such as: classical construction, equable aesthetic quality that followed the spirit of the late Secession or the modernized Academicism, and were designed in line with the requirements of the property-owners. Buildings created by Kovalevsky and Bilinski cannot be considered among the most important achievements of the interwar Belgrade residential architecture, but their study is important because it contributes to a better understanding and evaluation of the work of these authors, as well as the overall architectural production of that period.
