Method This is a quantitative, descriptive and cross-sectional study carried out with 411 elderly people living in the city of São Paulo. Demographic profile instruments, the Geriatric Depression Scale and a list of physical and psychological symptoms and substance use were used. Results There was a predominance of females, between 60 and 69 years old, with a partner, higher education, and with no change in income. In addition, not having a partner (p=0,02), psychological symptoms such as lack of hope (p=0,001), fear (p=0,008) and desire to die (p=0,003), and physical symptoms such as tremor (p=0,03) and tiredness (p<0,0001) were associated with depressive symptoms. On the other hand, not using illegal substances (p=0,03) was considered a protective factor against the presence of these symptoms. Conclusion It is necessary to be alert to any signs or symptoms that may indicate some mental suffering, suggesting the adoption of socialization measures.","PeriodicalId":31328,"journal":{"name":"Revista Brasileira de Geriatria e Gerontologia","volume":"1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"67329577","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Método Estudo de coorte prospectivo derivado das medidas de linha de base (2008/2009) e seguimento (2016/2017) do Estudo Fibra - Polo Unicamp. Foram analisados dados de 739 idosos (67,2% feminino; 73,1+5,87 anos) residentes em dois centros urbanos do estado de São Paulo (Brasil) para o exame de curvas de sobrevida e para estimar risco de mortalidade. As análises incluíram quatro condições resultantes da combinação entre depressão (presença x ausência de sintomas) e de fragilidade (frágil x robusto) e as covariáveis sexo, idade, escolaridade, desempenho cognitivo e comorbidades. Resultados A porcentagem de óbitos foi de 25,7%. Houve diferenças significativas entre as curvas de sobrevida referentes às combinações entre fragilidade e depressão. Sexo masculino, idade acima de 75 anos, baixa escolaridade, baixo desempenho cognitivo e as combinações “depressão-robusto”, “depressão-frágil” e “sem depressão-frágil” apresentaram riscos independentes para mortalidade. No modelo multivariado, os maiores riscos foram dados, respectivamente, por idades mais avançadas, as combinações “depressão-robusto”, “depressão-frágil”, “sem depressão-frágil”, sexo masculino e menor desempenho cognitivo. Conclusão Combinações entre fragilidade e depressão podem resultar em diferenças em sobrevida e mortalidade entre idosos. No período de nove anos, depressão revelou ser a variável de ordenação dos grupos em relação às estimativas de risco, mesmo na presença de covariáveis importantes. Investimentos na prevenção de ambas as síndromes e de suas associações podem resultar diminuição na mortalidade de idosos por causas gerais.","PeriodicalId":31328,"journal":{"name":"Revista Brasileira de Geriatria e Gerontologia","volume":"1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"67328920","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Methods Cross-sectional community-based study which analyzed data from the follow-up assessment of the FIBRA Study (Frailty in Elderly Brazilians) in the cities of Campinas and Ermelino Matarazzo (SP), Brazil, in 2016 and 2017. Participants were 187 community dwelling persons aged 80 years and older. The protocol included the application of a cognitive deficit screening test suggestive of dementia, an inventory assessing AADL, the Lawton and Brody scale (IADL), the Geriatric Depression Scale and the Ryff and Keyes’ (1995) Purpose in Life Scale. Results Participants had an average of 83.81 (±3.60) years, 4.38 (± 3.76) years of schooling, 3.49 minimum wages (±2.61) of income, 125 (66.8%) being women. Hierarchical linear regression analyzes showed that PV and depressive symptoms were significantly associated with a higher number of AADL (p=0.003) and no significant association with IADL scores (0.580), in a model adjusted for sociodemographic variables, self-rated health, cognitive performance and depression. Conclusions The results suggest that older adults with higher PL and lower number of depression symptoms are more likely to perform a higher number of AADL. This association was not observed for IADL, which were associated with age, sex, depression and cognitive performance. PL may have an impact on complex levels of functional status in the elderly, thus contributing to healthy aging.","PeriodicalId":31328,"journal":{"name":"Revista Brasileira de Geriatria e Gerontologia","volume":"1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"67329107","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Method This is an epidemiologic survey with cross-sectional design and sample representative of a Brazilian state (n=745 older adults). Data were collected through a computer-based questionnaire. The outcome variable was practice of physical exercises during physical distancing (≥2/week and ≥30 minutes). To analyse data, associative procedures (binary logistic regression) were used. Results The prevalence of exposure to insufficient levels of physical exercise was 42.8%, which was associated to lack of physical activity prior to physical distancing (p<0,001), lack of online physical activity lessons (p<0,001) and exposure to sedentary behaviour during physical distancing (p=0,005). Conclusion Physical distancing has resulted in high prevalence of exposure to insufficient levels of physical exercise among older people, which can have deleterious health effects. Method Qualitative research carried out with workers from 24 philanthropic institutions in Rio Grande do Norte. The concepts of vulnerability in health and social support supported the organization and discussion of data submitted to thematic analysis. Results The institutions partially adopted the prevention measures recommended by the National Health Surveillance Agency, in evidence: cancellation of visits, use of Personal Protective Equipment and cleaning of environments. For the most part, institutions prioritized the control of viral transmission, putting the reduction of socio-psychological impacts related to social distancing and isolation in the background. Measures not recommended and without scientific evidence were observed, such as the use of ivermectin. Also, the performance of social assistance and health networks was carried out in a more integrated way, improving the social support offered to institutions in the perspective of the pandemic. The Unified Health System stood out for its sanitary recommendations, supply of supplies and attention from the Family Health Strategy, while the Unified Social Assistance System acted in a less expressive way. Conclusion In general, the measures adopted were insufficient to prevent covid-19 in view of the susceptibilities of institutionalized elderly people. Although the pandemic has expanded the social support network and the visibility of Long-Stay Institutions for the Elderly, greater investments by the government are necessary to effectively reduce the vulnerability of these elderly people.","PeriodicalId":31328,"journal":{"name":"Revista Brasileira de Geriatria e Gerontologia","volume":"1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"67329653","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

The search strategy involved use of combinations with the following Health Science Descriptors (DeCS) and Medical Subject Headings (Mesh): Elderly (Aged); Covid-19; Aftercare and Patient Discharge combined using Boolean operators “AND” and “OR”. Results relevant articles published between January 2019 and January 2022 were identified, of which four were retrieved for inclusion and analysis. The selected studies addressed the theme of continuity of care with the perspective of intervention in health rehabilitation and symptom management and/or supervision of the functional recovery of older patients, with guidelines devised by an interprofessional team. Conclusion the study revealed the scarcity of publications on the topic of guidance provided by health care teams to older patients from the perspective of hospital discharge. The study also served to highlight the importance and need for future scientific output addressing the functional impact of COVID-19 on this population, from hospital admission to post-discharge at home, supported by strategic actions or institutional protocols that disseminate educational information preparing patients for hospital discharge and promoting self-care, well-being and quality of life of older people.","PeriodicalId":31328,"journal":{"name":"Revista Brasileira de Geriatria e Gerontologia","volume":"1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"67329964","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

Método Neste estudo coorte, 90 idosos foram submetidos a testes cognitivos (Mini Exame do Estado Mental e Bateria de Avaliação Frontal) e motores (teste Timed Up and Go e Questionário Internacional de Queda) em dois momentos: antes do primeiro caso da pandemia ser identificado no Brasil e após o fim do estado de emergência em saúde pública. O teste de análise múltipla de variâncias para medidas repetidas foi aplicado junto ao teste lambda de Wilk para verificar o impacto da covid-19 sobre os fatores “momento” (pré × pós-pandemia), “grupo” (sexo, estado civil e escolaridade) e “interação” (momento × grupo). Tamanho do efeito e poder estatístico foram reportados. Significância foi admitida em 5%. Resultados Pessoas idosas sofreram declínio cognitivo durante a pandemia da covid-19 (tamanho do efeito: 0,43; poder estatístico: 99,8%; p=0,001). O declínio foi semelhante segundo sexo (p=0,864), estado civil (p=0,910) e escolaridade (p=0,969). Os participantes sofreram ainda declínio das funções motoras durante a pandemia (tamanho do efeito: 0,74; poder estatístico: 99,9%; p=0,001). O declínio foi semelhante segundo sexo (p=0,542) e estado civil (p=0,260). Participantes com menor escolaridade sofreram maior declínio físico do que pessoas com maiores níveis escolares (tamanho do efeito: 0,38; poder estatístico: 97,6%; p=0,004). Estudo transversal de base populacional com dados secundários, da Pesquisa Nacional de Saúde em 2013, totalizando 11.697 indivíduos com 60 anos ou mais no Brasil. A variável dependente foi ter sofrido violência por agressor conhecido ou desconhecido e as independentes foram divididas em blocos (Socioeconômico e demográfico; Autopercepção e cuidado com a saúde; Utilização do serviço de saúde; Estado de saúde/doença e Funcionalidade). O efeito das variáveis independentes sobre a variável resposta, foi expresso pela “Odds Ratio” com Intervalo de Confiança 95%. Realizou-se modelos hierarquizados de regressão logística multinomial simples e múltipla. Na análise simples foram eletivas para análise múltipla as variáveis com p-valor <0,05. Construiu-se um mapa temático segundo a distribuição espacial da violência, por estado. Cor da pele branca, <68 anos, saber ler e escrever, problemas no sono, não sentir prazer em fazer atividades e ter deficiência física associaram-se ao agressor desconhecido. Saúde ruim, fumar, discriminação no serviço de saúde e sentir-se mal consigo mesmo se associaram ao agressor conhecido. Discriminação por tipo de doença e pequena dificuldade para sair sozinho foram associados para ambos agressores. Estados com maior número de casos de violência encontrados foram Amapá, Paraná, Mato Grosso, Amazonas e Rio Grande do Norte. Desse modo, estimar a prevalência de violência contra pessoas idosas, o tipo de agressor, assim como os fatores associados, é imprescindível para identificação e prevenção do abuso individual, institucional e estrutural.","PeriodicalId":31328,"journal":{"name":"Revista Brasileira de Geriatria e Gerontologia","volume":"1 1","pages":""},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2022-01-01","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"67330246","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
