First, there is an investigation into the epistemological framework of Abū Manṣūr al-Māturīdī’s theology. Then, the sources and subsequent development of his kalām tradition are examined. The final section looks at key figures in Western philosophy since Kant, identifying Edmund Husserl and Alasdair MacIntyre as especially important for the book’s theological project.","PeriodicalId":312438,"journal":{"name":"Transcendent God, Rational World","volume":"20 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-06-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"127008538","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

After discussion of premodern debates, a contemporary reading is made of these attributes. The chapter starts by exploring the theology of Abū Ḥanīfa and the reception of his ideas. Next, there is a detailed exposition of al-Māturīdī’s theology on this question, as well as that of his main classical successors and their interlocutors. Finally, the question is given a contemporary treatment, drawing on the theological resources already introduced over the course of the study.","PeriodicalId":312438,"journal":{"name":"Transcendent God, Rational World","volume":"47 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-06-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"124898669","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}

In the first section, the question of time is explored and a contemporary articulation of divine timelessness given. The second section looks at necessity, arguing in particular for the relevance of a distinction between logical and metaphysical necessity. The final section assesses an important shift in the conceptualisation of the divine nature between al-Māturīdī and later members of his tradition. This is followed by a contemporary approach to the divine nature that treats God’s attributes as substantive properties.","PeriodicalId":312438,"journal":{"name":"Transcendent God, Rational World","volume":"4 1","pages":"0"},"PeriodicalIF":0.0,"publicationDate":"2021-06-30","publicationTypes":"Journal Article","fieldsOfStudy":null,"isOpenAccess":false,"openAccessPdf":"","citationCount":null,"resultStr":null,"platform":"Semanticscholar","paperid":"133899546","PeriodicalName":null,"FirstCategoryId":null,"ListUrlMain":null,"RegionNum":0,"RegionCategory":"","ArticlePicture":[],"TitleCN":null,"AbstractTextCN":null,"PMCID":"","EPubDate":null,"PubModel":null,"JCR":null,"JCRName":null,"Score":null,"Total":0}
