Divine Speech and the Qur’an

Abstract

This chapter focuses on the divine attribute of speech and its relationship to the Qur’an, which has always been one of the most important and controversial aspects of Islamic theology. The chapter starts by exploring the theology of Abū Ḥanīfa and the reception of his ideas. Next, there is a detailed exposition of al-Māturīdī’s theology on this question, as well as that of his main classical successors and their interlocutors. Finally, the question is given a contemporary treatment, drawing on the theological resources already introduced over the course of the study.
